I once had a deep and disturbing conversation with a fundamentalist christian I used to work with, when we debated evolution/physics vs Intelligent design/god controlling everything.

I suggested that basically it was just pure luck that the circumstances were right, the chemicals were present in just the right amounts, the orbit of this rock around it's star was at just the right distance, etc, and his had led to a chain of event (called evolution) that led to us, sitting in that coffee shop, having that conversation. Colin was convinced that the opposite was true. He kept repeating "If that was the case, isn't it amazing that it happened to be THIS planet?"

I I countered that if it had been another planet, we'd be having exactly the same conversation there instead.

Let's think this through. Space is big. Really big. You just can't get your brain round how big space is. You might think it's a long way down to the shops, but that's peanuts compared to space. Now in all that space there are millions of planets, each with it's own particular orbiting family, or not, and some of those planets, purely bu chance, happen to be in an orbital range which gives the right temperature for the chemical reactions that lead to life to take place. And in all that space, random chance means that this is likely to have happened millions of times. And if only a fraction of them evolve far enough to result in intelligent life then there are still likely to be thousands of planets which have life. And we are one of them. By chance. Physics, chemistry, and eventually biology led to us. If you look into the way science explains these things you will see no NEED for a god/omnipotent mega being/guiding intelligence.

So There's my case. I don't believe in a god.

Having said that, all of the above doesn't PROVE that there is no god, just that there doesn't need to be one for life to exist on Earth the way it does. So believe what you like, and let others do the same. I'm cool with that.

(And, Foxmann, thanks for posting this thread up. It's interesting seeing the debate but i was always worried I'd get scorched for asking. )

Hey man, all of us fall short, that is why Christ came for us, so it didn't matter an aweful lot, so long as you believe in His power. I too have failed the last few months...I have been a horrible Christian, and had even lost my faith...not my belief, but my faith, if you know the difference. But, I know the Guy up there forgives me. and that is something to be happy about, not sad about...I mean, look here...on a porn forum, did you ever think you could meet another Christian?

Yes, but when you think about God, at least the God of the Holy Bible, you must put yourself in that point of view....you must think "God, all knowing creator." So, of course that is Physics, and whom do you supposed created that...I mean, God don' t just pull it out his ass. He made rules for the universe, and even He follows them. Physics just happens to be part of His rules....and I am not bashing...just putting it into a Christian perspective/

 

You should totally read "Small Gods" by Terry Pratchett. It's all about how gods come into being because FIRST they are believed in. Then that belief grows and so does that gods power. If the faith dies, so does the god.

I don't really see your point. are you saying each child is placed inside the mother by a "superbeing"? WHY must there be a superpower? Why can't the first being on this planet come from CHANCE? The one in a million combination of atoms and atmosphere, etc. to create a lifeform that is sustainable to THIS planet. Just as we can't survive on other planets (due to their atmosphere) I fully believe that on some other planet way across space there are being who can't survive on OUR atmosphere.

Truly, I believe religion stems from our ancestors not knowing WHY things happened. WHERE things came from. So they made up stories...much like greek myths. And at some point those stories became so engrained in people that they started to take them for truth.

And let me say as far as the Xtian faith is concerned: I have a hard time believing in a god that is so vain that he sends honest, kind, caring, good people to hell for not believing but gives deathbed converters like rapists and murderers entrances into the "pearly gates" because THEY are believers. Seems vain and insecure to me (if it's even possible to be both).

I'll take my chances not believing. As I once saw on a bumpersticker "Atheist: A person with no INVISIBLE means of support"

So "god" in all his wisdom invented photosynthesis, mitosis, miosis, RNA, DNA, ALL the laws of physics (centrifugal force, orbits, gravitational pull, atmospheric pressure, ALL the atoms, etc.) Like I said, I find it hard to believe that such a vengeful, wrathful god had the patience to develope these things. (AND IN 7 DAYS no less!)

 

I prefer the Brahma creation story, Brahma breathes and out in 10million year breathes. If that is true the universe will begin contracting after it is 10million years old for another 10million years.

 

I try and practice Buhddism to the best of my ability. I love the way that it has transcended the need for a divine figurehead, and has a mortal one that, rather than worship as anything more than an amazing MAN, they attempt merely to follow his example.

My beliefs regarding the 'original' Buhdda are sketchy at best, but I try to live by his example. Peace and Zen for all - sounds good, right?
