But, one must shine light, even in the darkest of areas, and if not us, then who? Ah, yes - the argument for the existence of a diety in the framework of an arrogant humanity. Is it such a stretch to say that these things are the way they are because we are here to observe them that way - and if they weren't that way, we wouldn't be here arguing about it?

Perhaps the better question to ask is why you believe what you believe. Your own belief in the christian god may have very little to do with physics and more to do with what is going on inside you. Good Luck with that.

I've just scanned the last half page or so of posts.

I wanted to say that I see not problem between my Christianity and being on this forum. Secondly, the argument against Christianity that 'No one can make the whole world in 7 days' because that's what it says in the bible doesn't hold up. That part of the bible is metaphorical for 'God made everything'. Back then there was no time. How do they know it was 7 days exactly or 7 of what WE know of as days? Also, I don't think that Christianity is hurting anyone (and yes, I know of historic events that are different, but those are in the past). Being a Christian makes people better as persons. Why is that such a bad thing?

Oh, and being atheist, saying that you don't believe in religion, is a religion.

 

Actually, Nymph, there ARE Fundies who believe that 7 days MEANS 7 days. But I agree. Even if the bible WAS true I don't think "7 days" would really equal 7 days.

Second, atheism (by definition) IS NOT a religion.
Def. of Religion (Am. Her. Dictionary):

1. • Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe.
   • A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship.
2. The life or condition of a person in a religious order.
3. A set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader.

If you have no set of beliefs, no "practices" how is that a religion? Atheists have no "guidelines". No "spiritual leader". No "commune". No "scripture". No "laws". No "dieties". That's like saying EVERYONE who believes in monotheism is a Xtian.

My point is that atheists differ just as much (if not more so) as Xtians. You wouldn't call a protestant a methodist. Or a catholic a protestant. Their beliefs and practices are different because they are different religions. Trying to lump all atheists into a group is like trying to lump all religions in a group. It just doesn't work.

Some atheists believe in a "higher power" just not a diety. Some think it's just us in this big fat universe. Some believe in a "soul" to a certain extent. Some don't. The point is, while some "atheists" can be considered "religious". There are many of us who don't believe in any of that (crap). I don't believe in a diety, soul, commandments, any of it. I try to live my life by the wiccan creed because I think it's the rule to live one's life by. But I don't have "faith" in anything but myself.

I don't see how anyone can classify atheism as religion. By definition it's the antonym. In fact...from Thesaurus.com: Antonyms: belief, godliness, piety, religion

I agree that being on a porn forum and being Christian should not be mutually exclusive, as I said above, if God is everywhere, then he must be here too, even in the circuits of your hard-drive. To say that he isn't would be to demean him!

Your '7-day' argument illustrates quite clearly to me the problem with all holy scriptures.
If something flies in the face of what we call scientific reasoning, we say it is a metaphor, and thereby retain it as truth. The real issue, to me, is when the metaphors in scriptures are interpreted as truth, and used as a means for social law and direction. Examples of this are religious attitudes to adultery, homosexuality, abortion etc.

I agree that a true Christian, who lived their life according to the teachings of Jesus, would be a better person. I would, however, submit that a person who lived their life in the same way without faith, without religion and without the reward or punishment incentive of heaven and hell, would be an even better person. Self-motivated morality, to me, is infinitely more honest, and deep-seated than the carrot and stick variety.

By definition, I don't think you can define atheism as a religion, as it is an absence of a belief in a god.
But, that doesn't mean you can't be a nice person........

 

Yea, I believe in God, I mean it's just not possible for the entire universe to just create itself out of NOTHING
