gravity always has been, always will be, and is constant, the sun always has a gravitational pull of X newtons, as the earth will always have a pull of Y newtons, and so on and so forth

If you want more than that i'd suggest talking to someone who took college physics, all i had was high school level

I think he's trying to imply that gravity has to have been "developed" by someone.

That the laws of physics were "created" by "someone". Versus being a universal constant like math.

And it may not be in the bible but xtians are the most pushy and openly vocal we non-xtians have to deal with. So someone somewhere is telling them to "go out and spread the word" and to "save us sinners".

Exactly....the bible is used as rules to govern basic human behavior. Who's to say that's not its only purpose. The bible was written by MAN. And MAN can be bought and paid for by anyone with enough money.

And that's another thing. How do you xtians really buy into god sending his only son who IS ACTUALLY god down to earth. I mean think about it. God impregnates Mary. Then becomes the baby yet remains the father. Then dies, gets reborn and ascends to join HIMSELF in heaven?????? yeah. THAT'S not hard to buy into.

Have you considered WHY you believe in god? Do you think perhaps it's because you never knew anything else? Because you were brainwashed at birth? Because your whole life everyone else told you that that was the truth? All you have to do is really READ the bible. LOOK at the "facts". It just doesn't add up. Trust me. 9 years of 45min religion classes EVERY DAY with TESTS and QUIZZES, you really learn to take apart the bible. And (aside from being poorly written) it makes little sense.

And actually I'm an atheist because my parents were kind enough and wise enough to allow me to come to my OWN choices. Both parents are Baptists. I went to catholic school because it was the best education. But never was I pressured at home to partake of any religious events unless I wanted to. And when I was old enough to start questioning I was allowed to do my own research and come to my own conclusion. I was allowed to find my own answers. I toyed with being agnostic for a while. But then I realized that I was just claiming to be because it was less objectionable and less "unpopular". And one day I decided to stop hiding behind "i don't know" and be true to myself. The day I denounced god and religion in general was probably the happiest most satisfying day of my life. So no, my lack of faith doesn't have anything to do with being forced to believe anything ever.

I definitely believe that there are higher beings. I have read and tried to compare the many religions that are around and it is amazing how many have the same parables, stories, beliefs, and ways to better mankind. Names and places may be changed, but the basic stories, parables, etc. are very similiar. I believe that each person has their own spiritual journey and should not be imposed upon by anyone else. This is not to say we can't help if it is asked for, just that the person needs to ask first. Oh well, that's my 2 cents.

If you want a VERY plausible account of the creation of the Bible, and the Gospels, read Foucault's Pendulum, by Umberto Eco.

Basically the premise is that they were created as a story to amuse people, but suddenly all these fanatics started taking it literally and claiming that Jesus was divine, and there was a supreme God, and it all got horribly out of hand. Does THAT not sound plausible?

 

The council of Nicea in 323 (or thereabouts) called by Constantine, the Emporer, to establish the ONLY CHURCH allowed, voted on a number of things. The divinity of Jesus and the Trinity idea were some of the things. Someone said Jesus was divine by only one vote,,,,,,,,,,,I don't know the source of that and doubt if its true.

The canonical books of the Bible were also selected. They were all put on a table in a locked room overnight, and in the morning, all the books left on the table were deemed to be true and canonical. We don't know who had the key to the room. Obviously GOD selected the books by mysteriously throwing the other books on the floor.

And immediately the brand new Xtian Church started killing anybody that disagreed with it.

zyzx, you are right. The council of Nicea did in fact vote on Jesus' divinity. If you read the gospels in order of age, oldest first, you find that the further you get through, Christ gets more and more divine. The oldest gospels do not in any way insinuate that Jesus was divine.

It's all a method for controlling people. Cliched, but Marx was right - religion is the opium of the masses.
