The problem with 'X' is that it is an unnecessary letter.

There is no word spelled with 'X' that could not be spelled some other way.

And so on.

Sure, it is convenient to use one letter ('x') instead of two (ks) or three (eks).

But we need several words for the 'duji' sound in 'midge', and we need a few letters for the ktsch sound in 'mensch.' Those sounds show up more commonly in the English language than the 'eks' in xray, and they don't get any special treatment!

If I had to guess, I'd wager that 'x' is vestigial. Sort of like the pancreas. 'x' is probably a leftover from Greek which used the letter more ekstensively.

Forgot if its etymology or something else. The English letter thorn which is still depicted in many signs and usually mispronounced as YE instead of THE correct ancient usage of the letter.

Mystery! Why did such a useful letter disappear from the alphabet?

Any XNXX Scholars know the answer?

Then the C, K, and S, thing is strange too. and the little caret over a letter in French to show that the S had been deleted as in Ile de France.

The Chinese had a great idea a number of years ago, X became the letter for CH, and J for SH in transliteration of Chinese characters to Roman characters.(I might have them reversed I never can remember).

 

I checked my Webster's Unabridged Dictionary to see about verbs that start with 'x', and their dearth is not my imagination. It so happens that the only true verbs beginning in 'x' are the hypenated variants on radiation, viz., 'x-ray' and 'x-irradiate.' There are no others. However, this was most likely not the case in Greek. English has altered many such verbs by tacking 'e' on the front (exhume, exonerate, exculpate, exit, and many others).

The French cedilla is so helpful that it has made its way into the English language, strange though it is! It is used in the official American English spelling of façade! My theory on why is probably wrong, but I bet it is meant to discourage us from pronouncing the word as fahked.

Middle English is fascinating-- almost a language unto itself, and Old English definitely counts as a wholey distinct language. Much was lost in transition. Unfortunately I've forgotten most of my Chaucer, and I couldn't tell you how we lost the letter for 'ye' without pasting from Wikipedia. And that would be cheating. I do wonder if anyone knows the answer!
