I checked the SSA website and did a little background check on three of Leila's most favorite names, Kaitlyn, Brianna and Hannah.

Hannah is by far the most popular (read: common) name, being ranked no lower than #5 in the U.S going back more than ten years. It usually vacillates between 2nd to 4th to 3rd, and so on.

Brianna is also one of the most popular. It was ranked 48th starting in 1992 and has steadily increased in popularity, making it all the way to 14th in 1999 and back down to 17th in 2003.

Kaitlyn has also gotten more popular as the years passed. It ranked next to Brianna in '92 and has risen in popularity making it to 31st in 2001 and 32nd in 2003.

That's the most recent info I could get, the website server stopped responding. But it just goes to prove my point that Leila doesn't want to hear. The more popular a name becomes, it means the more poor, underclass people are giving their children that name. Not exclusively, of course, but it does show that about 20 years ago Z, when the student you had, Brianna was born, and the same with Kaitlyn (the students you said came from fairly upper class families) that name was just starting to enter the public mind.

In 1992, both Brianna and Kaitlyn barely cracked the top 50. Now, they're among the most popular names.

Leila told me when we first started talking about names that I couldn't pick anything common, but common is defined by her depending on how much she likes the name, not about whether it's actually common or not. Those kind of loose rules that change when it's suitable, annoy me. Especially when I can prove that I'm right. It starts to get under my skin and it's irritating.

As pretty as the names are, they have a negative connotation for me because I know they're now white trash names. I grew up around white trash, I've known or heard of more than a handful of white trash kids named Brianna, Kaitlyn and Hannah and I would be thinking about that all the time. It's weird, I admit and I'm not making excuses for it, but it is what it is. That's why those names are unacceptable to me.

OK here's a solution I came up by the time our third and fourth children were coming along. I said instead of endless suggestions and discussions, and sometimes even arguments, the best thing to do would be wait until the kid comes out and name it what ever it looks like.

If its a girl Id pick Autumn.

 

Catherine, Katherine, Kathleen, or anything that can't be shortened into what is normally a man's name (like Desiree)

Leila Rules

Shakey don't hold her rule making and changing against her, after all that's what women do, especially if they are Geminis, but I dont' know if Leila is. Think of the lovely person she is and just go with it as one of peculiarities. (Yea I know it gets irritating, but really try to get past the irritation)

 

My personal favourite name is Kim or Kimberley

Actually I'd be the Gemini in the family, she's a Virgo and if the doctors are right with the date, our newborn will be a Scorpio. And I don't hold it against her, but I have an equal say in this and I don't like being given a different set of rules to play by. I love her to death, but was it The Duke who said "A man's got to do what a man's got to do."

I had a list of over 20 possible names and all of them were shot down. I keep looking for new solutions, willing to compromise, she keeps giving me the same 5 names or so. In case you can't tell, I'm getting a little frustrated.

She shot down Isabella a long time ago, it was one of my first suggestions. A shortened version could be Isa, which sounds vaguely exotic, which I dig, or Bella, which is 'beautiful' in Italian, which is also cool.

Well, I feel that I need to defend myself a little bit in light of of the Leila bashing that has been going on since I went away for a couple days.

When I said I didn't like "common" names, I specifically defined that as the really overused names such as Jennifer, William, Amanda, Joshua.....you get the idea. That was what I meant by "common".

I was also the first to admit that a couple of the names I found pretty were hitting the popularity lists recently. But I can't help it if I just thought they sounded nice.

And spewing statistics about names gaining popularity does not "prove" that they became popular because white trash people started naming their kids that. It just proves that a name gained popularity, period. Most of the time that happens because of television shows or popular movies of the time (ie, JENNIFER). Now, if I gave my kid the name "Lexi" or "Paris" or some shit like that, then it would seem more like trying to give the kid a "rich" sounding name.

Hannah for example has been around since at least the mid 1800s, and if you don't believe me, ask my great great great Aunt.

 

I wonder if Kaelynn (or some various spelling thereof) is too close to "Kaitlynn" to be considered? I saw it on a forum someone was using it as a middle name.

My cousin has a Kaylee, which is really cute. I like the "K" names. I also know someone who named their daughter Kaia (KI-Ya). And I also know a Keelee (not sure if its spelled like that). Not so keen on Keelee, but there are lots of other K names that are nice.

 

I just found Kylie, thats nice too.

 

Carrie's a pretty name...you could always spell it with a K.
