A Spaniard is both a Spaniard and a European. To call a person from Spain "European" is not in any way incorrect, and only implies that his or her country has a connection with a larger continent. It does not claim that all countries of that continent are identical. The same goes for a "Canadian" who resides on the "American" continent.

May I give an English perspective of the American/Canadian/North American discussion you guys are having? No? Tough.

In England, if we are educated and realise that Canada is a country, we would never refer to Canadians as 'Americans'. The term 'Americans' is solely reserved for those lovely people who are from the United States of America. We always call Canadians 'Canadians' if we know that they are Canadian. If we don't know which country they are from, because some of us do find it difficult to ascertain, just by looking at someone, then we would refer to them as 'North American'.

Many silly people here would call anyone from Canada or America, 'American', because they don't understand that they are two separate countries.

Over here in good old blighty, North America is a continent consisting of two countries, unless you include Central America, which I'm fine with by the way, if you're interested. South America is those 13 countries just south of the isthmus (I love that word, but can't say it).

I can understand the Canadians getting upset about it. I guess it's similar (although by no means the same) as the Welsh or Scottish being called English. If I was Welsh or Scottish that would piss me off.
