Dedicated readers will recall that during the government shutdown the BLM and park service shut down Lee's Ferry, stopping all river trips in the Grand Canyon.
The travesty of this was that first, most of those scheduled to launch had waited years.........in one case 14 years.............for the trip of a life time and second, it actually cost the government MORE to shut down lee's Ferry than to keep it open.
As we learned later, Obama endorsed the plan, cause you know, the point was to make it painful, this unheard of shut down of HIS government.

Arizona responded by bowing to Government black mail, and actually paid the Feds Millions to, you know, fund the reopening of the park.

That initiated an effort by Arizona to reclaim the Grand Canyon, since you know, it is part of Arizona; or was, until the Feds grabbed it for a "park" (belonging to all of us in theory and protecting it forever from development by those greedy bastards). Course, the fact that they promptly stuck a couple of corks in the canyon, forever altering it, just so they could, you know, sell the power and water that they hoarded was ignored.

Until Obama's (the constitution is really more of a guideline) administration so casually smashed the dreams of a few thousand river rats and enraged the populace of Arizona all went along swimmingly. Now, we'd like our canyon back, you slimy bastard, and if you think Bundy is a lawless pain in the ass, wait till you block the road to Lee's Ferry again. This time we'll show up with pitchforks and axes, not beer and smokes.

In 1985 the Bureau of Reclamation completed McPhee dam on the Dolores river, in SW Colorado. The logic was, we need to recover this water so the residents can have it to live with. When river fanatics showed up to discuss the damming of the Dolores they were told, "well really, the dam will extend the river season from a month in May well into July."

The Dolores is, in his opinion, the pinnacle of rivers. It is one of the few Western rivers that runs North, cuts through every clime from high mountain to high dessert, offers some of the finest whitewater outside of the Grand Canyon, has scenery unequaled anywhere, and it is where he fell in love with that blonde who has slept in his bed for 35 years.

Here's the thing. The deal BOR promised when they built the dam was that water rights would extend to all holders down river. That meant that beyond holding the water for Montezuma and Dolores counties, and the Ute mountain indians, half of the stored water would have to be released downstream so those users could access the water that McPhee impounded. Water they had rights to, McPhee or not.

That would mean that rafting the Dolores would be possible even after the dam was put in.

Hasn't worked out quite that way. Turns out, the Pinto Bean and Alfalfa farmers have been able to secure senior water rights to almost ALL of the Dolores water, and they like it just fine being kept in McPhee until, you know, they need to water their crops.

As a result the upper Dolores has not been raftable since 2012 (a trickle that let a few local boaters drag their boats down stream) and won't be this year either. Or for the foreseeable future.

The fish are dead, the Tamarask have taken over the river bed, and wild life have fled for wetter pastures. The Dolores is dead now. Gone forever.

When they did the Wild and Scenic rivers study I was privileged to be a part of it; I rowed one of the cargo boats hauling the government minions down the canyons. We showed them previously unknown cliff dwellings, still containing artifacts from over 1,000 years ago.

We introduced them to the incredible Slickrock canyon, Bucks Alley, and most impressive of all; Snaggletooth rapid.

They wrote their report; Dolores should be designated a wild and scenic river, and protected forever from development.

Two years later, McPhee was approved in part on the basis of guaranteed minimum stream flows. Forever.

Bullshit. The Pinto bean and alfalfa farmers are the new rich of the area, the Ute Mountain Indians are still waiting for their water, and even when there are surplus flows, the dam administrator (a bean farmer himself) makes sure that the releases are such that rafting is all but impossible.
