Turns out we're both wrong about Wright. (I'm researching it. )

He was a Marine before he transferred to the Navy. And I am also sort of half-wrong about him being a chaplain. As a marine he never really held that role in an official capacity, but he was, shall we say, a rogue practitioner.

But no matter. He was definitely a Muslim. He was a protege of Louis Farrakhan, and as an adherent of the Nation of Islam in his youth he even travelled with Farrahkan's entourage on tours of Libya.

At any rate, the reason why it matters is that his apostasy made him a strong and eloquent proponent of black liberation theology, which no doubt provided plenty of fodder for his rabid anti-semitism and anti-American rants.
