In order to do this they would have to break their own rules. When someone gets banned they are banned via private messages not public ones. To tell everyone why they were banned they would have to reveal the content of those messages.

Accept it when I say anyone that was banned was banned for a rule violation. If someone was banned because they were not liked by a moderator, they would have an easy way back. The mod must have the right ammo or the gun don't work.

 

And you've been told time and time again, for years now, the member knows why they were banned. They are the only one who needs to know.

 

I think people are allowed to post the contents of their own PM's, as long as these do not divulge personal information (real name, address, etc.) about someone else. If this is not true, the Rule prohibiting the posting of a PM needs to be changed.

Requiring mods to explain banning decisions would make it more difficult for them to arbitrarily ban posters. It would also enable other posters to see how the Rules are interpreted.

Myself I think ahorsewithnoname 'retired' under pressure from higher up, not citing any specifics out of respect due the former-moderators privacy other than to say he took 'responsibility' for an oversight in his duties involving a now-banned member.

Applaud the mods when they show personal integrity, cry foul when hypocrisy is apparent.

Joe, ya got a good point about summertime and attentions being elsewhere.

I would advise that before anybody gets really concerned about the drop in activity that they wait until mid October to compare with the prior years AT THAT TIME.

The story forum might easily have a drop in participation due to the restriction clarification but I do not think that it will be as severe as projected.
The story site may easily suffer from stories being removed but if they are removed as soon as they go up then it should not impact the site unduly. Prior stories can be removed or updated as they are determined to violate the restriction.

Give everybody time to cool down.
Give everybody time to adjust their XXXpectations.
Give the moderating staff time to do their duties instead of having to justify or protect themselves in these forums.

In short - take 10 and relax.
