  2. Hello,

You can now get verified on forum.

The way it's gonna work is that you can send me a PM with a verification picture. The picture has to contain you and forum name on piece of paper or on your body and your username or my username instead of the website name, if you prefer that.

I need to be able to recognize you in that picture. You need to have some pictures of your self in your gallery so I can compare that picture.

Please note that verification is completely optional and it won't give you any extra features or access. You will have a check mark (as I have now, if you want to look) and verification will only mean that you are who you say you are.

You may not use a fake pictures for verification. If you try to verify your account with a fake picture or someone else picture, or just spam me with fake pictures, you will get Banned!

The pictures that you will send me for verification won't be public

    Best regards,

    StanleyOG.

Over the last two-three years I have sold many thousands of dollars worth of "stuff" on Craigslist without a problem.

The key is to have all the responses go through their system, don't give personal contact information until the person is vetted.

I never sold anything on craigslist because i had heard many stories that didn't sound too good. I have sold a lot of things on eBay, which is much safer for the buyer than craigslist but of course you pay dearly for the security of eBay. I have had over one thousand great transactions but its very difficult to make much profit because the seller fees are outrageous.

If you want to sell some more stuff, you might want to try Craigslist.

I have sold three complete woodworking shops, several vehicles, furniture and a bunch of other tools, without a single problem. But the key is to use their response system, do not post your address, phone number or regular email address. You will be able to negotiate anonymously and safely.

If you put a phone number in the ad, and it's more than $100, you'll get text messages from Nigerian scammers who use google phone. They always want to pay with paypal.

Shooter gives his stuff to Goodwill or Battered wives or wounded warriors.
See, If I sell it I'm supposed to declare the sale on my taxes as income.
If I give it away it's a deduction.
Plus, I get to help people.

That is fine with stuff that is not durable, we donate dozens of clothing items each year. Same with household items, small appliances and the like, when I was very active in construction, we donated every surplus item to habitat. But most good tools sell for more than I paid for them, the deduction is maxed at original cost less depreciation. So while I do report the income ;) , the gain is less than my deductions for other stuff.

Besides, I really don't mind paying tax on my capital gains.

I found listing my phone as 1(234)567-8910 would generate solicitations from terrorist cells and African nationals being held hostage from reality

But listing my phone as 1(2three4)5six7eight910 would generate calls from my area.

    Hope it helps?

I inadvertently put my phone number in the contact information section. I have Corvette transmission for sale(if anyone is interested, pm me), so anyone truly interested wants to know the exact application and condition of the transmission. My Nigerian friends give themselves away by 1: never asking about the transmission, 2:insisting on using paypal, and 3: saying a "mover" will come claim the transmission.

"Mover" is not ordinary US usage for a freight company. The standard scam runs like this, the buyer asks you to accept payment well over the purchase price, because he owes the "mover" a debt. You take the payment and give the excess cash to the mover when he picks up the item. Of course, the payment, whether it's through paypal or cashiers check is bogus. The item and your money are gone. For a previous sale, the buyer was so insistent, he sent a USPS money order for $500 to cover a $200 item, even though I made it clear it would not be accepted.

Paypal takes no responsibility for the validity of a user's financial information. An account can be set up using a fraudulent or bogus credit card number. If a person accepts a payment that can't be collected, the transfer is reversed and the seller has no real recourse.

I would have thought paypal was a safer way of doing business? How could such a large company NOT check to varify "buyers" ability to really pay? Maybe it's just my naivete/ "not at all" computer savvy self talking here.

paypal is geared more toward protecting the buyer, at the seller's expense. If a buyer disputes a transaction, the money is frozen until it's resolved. The buyer can claim the item was misrepresented or anything else. A lot of ebay sellers no longer take paypal for this reason.

Scammers take advantage of the lag in international transactions. This is why they always send someone to take the item just as payment is accepted. When the fraud is discovered, it's too late do do anything about it. Craigslist has a nice page on avoiding scams.

There is an old adage in retail, "You cam only sell something once, make sure you do your homework before the sales is completed".

To be scammed out of an item through a phony money transaction is a double whammy, you have neither the money or the item. Keeping this in mind, I never sell something or buy something blind, if the buyer or seller doesn't have good creds, I walk away. I bought an expensive boat part on ebay, the seller couldn't believe that I drove 550 miles one way, to inspect the item before I gave him the cash for it. ebay went postal on my ass for dealing direct with the seller, I told them it was their problem, not mine.

I used to do a lot of buying and selling on ebay. Old woodworking tools are plentiful and cheap. I quit selling because most of my items were under $50 and it just wasn't worth the time.

My wife has an estate sale company and often times it's necessary to make appointments, so phone numbers must be include in the ad. Large ticket items always attract scammers who want to conduct all business through texting. Their attempts are kind of pathetic, mostly because their English is so poor. I can't imagine anyone falling for it, but it must happen often enough to keep them trying.
