I would agree it's not cool. I believe, though, that technically it's not against the rules either, but it's a serious breach of trust, and morally wrong if you don't have the real person's permission.

 

Fair enough. I didn't bother to read the whole two pages once I realised it had devolved into an argument about whether or not you were a fake yourself.

People on a forum are entitled to reveal as much about themselves as they are comfortable with. For some people, this means using someone else's pics and letting everyone believe it is them. If that's as far as it goes, that's pretty harmless. There are people who take it much farther. I've been drawn into online drama between people over things such as faking a death in order to avoid finally meeting in person. Another woman claimed to have ovarian cancer and wanted to postpone meeting until her chemotherapy was finished. She was actually pregnant.

That was women who were real women. The men who present themselves as women are a world unto themselves. One guy was using his wife's pics to present a female persona. This was quite clever because he had steady supply of fresh pics. That lasted until someone who knew his wife happened to log onto the forum. I say, "happened", but those kind of things are never a coincidence.

The most spectacular female impersonator turned out to be a lawyer who was a small time film producer. His charade started with pics of a young actress who worked on one of his projects. He created an elaborate biography for the username Karen Kraft, starting when she was 18. The still pics were later supplemented by videos on other social forums, for which the link always found it way back home. This was kept up for nearly 10 years. A lot of people found it hard to believe that a 20 something young woman could be a Bush Republican, but the facade was maintained until google image search cracked the case. One of the face pics was traced back to the actress's IMDB page. This led to her only two screen credits, both of which were produced by the middle aged lawyer. What really lit the fire is that Karen once posted a list of books she authored and posted on smashwords. A couple of the books were actually credited to Ken, the producer.

People who keep the distance between themselves and their online loves, should be left alone, as long as there's no money involved. If someone is using deception to get something from someone, even if it's only personal information, or naked pics, that's fair for exposure.

 

There are PLENT of other things you can post if you aren't comfortable w showing yourself. I've seen cartoons on here, sunsets, sports team . . . All things that can be posted. Also if you find out someone lied about something so big (in terms of things you could lie about) then why would you care to believe anything they are saying?

 

How did you find out she was pregnant and the rest was a lie?

I was a mod and had to edit the posts that revealed a lot of personal information. The man who was waiting for her to finish chemo told me the story. The woman had followed him to another forum and created a new user name to make friends with his current girlfriend. It got complicated, after that.

 

All of this got me thinking . . . Are all pics that are over the internet ok to use? Do they have to be from porn sites? Famous people? I mean I guess there isn't a way to enforce that. I've also seen people post pics of their wife, sister, mother, daughter, girlfriend, etc. is that really ok? Wouldn't you need their permission? And how would anyone know if they actually have you permission. It's interesting.

It was a response to what someone said. I wasn't saying that someone should call the police and I'm damn sure if you had a sister (extreme example) and someone was passing her pics around a porn site you wouldn't be to happy.
