How can I defend something that is not proven in a non christian eyes?
Your question is why do I choose to believe in something that you cannot see.
I did not choose to be a christian, God chose me and you!
The same as I did not chose my skin colour or nationality.
What do I get out of believing?I don't get jack out of believing apart from knowing that what I do and say is of a moral importance.
When I die there is no guarantee of a so called heaven and hell,that is not proven, although it is written.
Why do I believe?I was born believing.

 

I'm still struggling to find where your oppinion was asked for, and where you get off trying to ridicule the beleifs of others; is the satisfaction you get out of trying to dash the hopes and beleifs of others a more belligerent satisfaction, or more of a sadistic kind of satisfaction?

I definitely believe in God, and I've never doubted it for a minute. My beliefs give me so much peace and comfort. I will not apologize or spend my time defending how I believe. We've had sooooo many threads on this subject, I'm tired of them...I just lost someone that I loved, he was very spiritual!!! It has given me a lot of comfort to know he is home again with God. He always said he was ready whenever the time came..

your skin colour is determined by the ethnicity of your parents
your nationality is determined either by the location where you where born or raised (requiring certain bureaucratic documents) and nationality is a purely socially determined form of identity. i don't see its spiritual significance

not really a good response since in both situations you have to already believe in god for either option to be relevant. it sounds to me like parents who say ' dont do that, why? because i said so' not really answering the question rather they are just reconfirming the demand.

 

Spirit, the problem a lot of us "non-xtians" are having right now is Bush's disinterest in separating religion and state. I mean a PROTECTION OF MARRIAGE AMENDMENT....do you know how hard it is to ratify or undo an amendment?!

It's his RELIGIOUS beliefs that cause him to be against gay marriage. It has nothing at all to do with the law. I mean what LEGAL issues are there with gay marriage? Would it impact the economy, public health, etc? No! It's just a matter of him being homophobic and knowing that a majority of the country feels the same way. It has nothing to do with protecting this country from anything.

 

I am a half buddhist and half atheist. I belive that there is something biger then us. That gives me enough peace just to know that there is just some kind of an explonation to our pointless existence.

To answer your question, Snoochies, I get a sense of security, a feeling that my life actually matters and that it isn't just a waste and that there's a higher purpose to life. And yea, I was brought up Catholic but I had to figure out for mymself if I really believe in God and I do. I just can't see all this around me happening without some higher power.

Oh honey, I feel ya. I am a very loud protestor of religion being at all included with state. I don't really count myself with "religious" people because I don't have anything that dictates my beliefs (book, bible, etc.)

I loathe Bush. I'm marching in a peace rally in a few weeks, and our banner is specifically geared at getting religion of any kind out of the white house (and all of it's other forms, you understand).

Like I said, I think it's immature for people to challenge my beliefs just because they can. Basically, I don't respond. If it was, however, harming someone (as that stupid amendment proposes to) then I would HAVE to answer questions. But it doesn't.

People like Incubus are ridiculous to me. When you, Snoochies, ask sincerely for someone to explain something that you simply don't understand and we who have a faith answer, it's not right to bash. It simply is not right.

Maybe that's why I'm considered religious? I have a concept of ethics, unlike some, who do not respect boundaries (totally not at you Snoochies, but the other bashers on this thread).

Regarding the thermodynamics question: A) you put me at an unfair advantage, quoting an athiest book, but that's ok . B) I don't believe I was created out of nothing. That is a christian belief, and one that I don't share. I DO believe that the energy that fills me, or "spirit" if I wanted to get far-fetched, came from somewhere, and when the housing for it dies, it'll move on to something else.

I mean, to be technical... if I choose to be cremated and dumped over the ocean, and fish eat me, and that food gives them the energy to reproduce, couldn't it be argues that I am part of that fish, the baby fish, and the whale that eats the fish? I'm a big believer in cycles, so yes, I don't believe that whatever makes me ME will ever be truly destroyed.

once again, like so many times before, debating spirituality with someone ends up in resentment or hostility from the person defending their spiritual ideal. i would never react the same way to someone challenging or disagreeing with me on my atheist ideals.

if something is worth believing you should have the ways or means to defend it. if its that important to you , you should not be offended. i don't bash religion or spirituality, i said live and let live but does that mean that no one is even allowed to disagree?

i believe becaus something actually physically happened that changed the way i think and feel. i dont believe in a single god but i believe in a life force. i can actually feel it running through me all the time and can somethimes harness it so i can do things i couldnt before. nothing super-human or anything just more powerful and comfortable

 

I don't care enough about you to resent you. I feel differently about... pretty much everything that has to do with interpersonal communication than you do. You are a pester: why why why!? you ask. Why do I feel this way? Why do I think this way? And granted, it said specifically by the OP to not simply say "because I do", but that's my answer when you push it to the extreme.

That's the difference between a person who has faith and who doesn't. The one who doesn't is always striving for something more, something to fill a gap where answers can no longer be made; the person who does have faith (in ANYTHING), gets to a point where is usually just doesn't matter.

I live a life that I think is worth living. I'm happy with it, and what has come so far, and the times that I have felt inexplicably divine things are what reinforce my quiet faith. I don't swing it around like you do your athiesm. I don't genuinely care enough why you DON'T believe to bother you about it. I leave it as yours, and go on my way.

I think the only one between the two of us who is a true "live and let live" person is myself.

Miracle story: This man broke into a house, beat up a husband, tied him to a chair. Took the wife in the other room and was going to have his way with her. When the deputy arrives on the scene, the man has the guy at gunpoint with a .357 mag (think dirty harry), when the officer enters the room it startles the husband, who pulls the trigger three times on reflex, the hammer falls all three times, all three bullets struck have pressure marks, but no bullets fired. The gun is later test fired with the same ammo, and the gun fires all 6 rounds, including the three rounds it did not fire the first time. Divine intervention.
