First I think any fool, including you, knows full well that an adversary country is always very interested in the internal problems of another country. Because if they can learn about those problems they can exploit them and make those internal problems worse and hopefully cripple their adversary from within.

But that is not what Russia is being accused of doing here. What Russia did was hack into our political institutions, especially the DNC and DCCC in order to interfere in the US Presidential election and try to hurt Hillary Clinton and help Donald Trump because Trump, his campaign, and his political appointees are pro-Putin/Russia.

Obviously enough votes to help him win the election. But most analysts don't see the Russian interference so much as gaining additional votes for Trump as suppressing votes for Clinton. It was a case of the drip, drip, drip of emails being released that helped kill Clinton's momentum, kept Clinton and the Democrats on the defensive instead of being able to push their positive message, and drove the press coverage against Clinton and her campaign..
