A Chinese warship has captured an underwater US Navy drone right in front of the eyes of the crew of an American ship in the South China sea, prompting a government official to say, 'they stole it'.

The incident has triggered a formal demarche from the United States and a demand for its return, a US defense official told Reuters on Friday.

The capture - the first of its kind in recent memory - took place on December 15 northwest of Subic Bay just as the USNS Bowditch, an oceanographic survey ship, was about to retrieve the unmanned, underwater vehicle.

Admiral Harry Harris, commander of US Pacific Command, used a speech in Sydney yesterday to warn that the United States was ready to confront China over its activities in the South China Sea. Under the Obama administration, the South China Sea has been transformed into a volatile flashpoint for war between China and the US. Harris’s remarks make clear that those dangers will only rise under a Trump administration.

Speaking at the Lowy Institute, Harris declared: “We will not allow a shared domain to be closed down unilaterally, no matter how many bases are built on artificial features in the South China Sea.” He warned: “We will cooperate when we can but we will be ready to confront when we must.”

As in the past, Harris provided no evidence that China was constructing military bases on islets under its control. The US and international media continue to seize on any indication of Chinese military activity to hype up the alleged “threat” posed. The latest is a report from the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) that alleges China is building anti-aircraft and missile defence systems in the Spratlys.

The situation in the South China Sea has been escalating for well over two years, it has been contentious for decades.

To suddenly say it's because Trump took a telephone call from Taiwan is ridiculous. However, I will grant that the implication of Trumps posture on foreign relations could easily give rise to even more heightened tensions.

 

Start a war with them, that should knock a few trillion off the national debt. 

 

Implying that this will make cause for heightened tensions, China already knows what Trump has in store for them on an economic level, as they also know, that Trump will not be standing on the sidelines...as our current POTUS is doing.

 

Economic negotiations will also lower the national debt.

and while everyone else just squabbled about who owned what , nobody actually did anything about securing them.
Everyone left the vacuum to long , China filled it , while no one did anything to stop them.

In practical terms , you can't really blame them. The biggest trading nation on the planet , and that's their front door . (and they don't have any side doors , lol , just a very difficult back door , through Russia and the Stans etc)

 

Islands in the South China sea are stationary targets.

 

It is certainly no exaggeration to say that Obama destroyed the Seventh Fleet.

U.S. force projection in the Pacific has dropped steadily ever since 2009, when Obama unilaterally abandoned the two front doctrine. China has an open court in the western Pacific, and it is all Obama's doing.

Trump won't fix it overnight. It will take a decade to rebuild.
