All this pomp for a bastardization of what it was started as. The original celebrations of the date began for Adolf Hitlers birth day, but the upside is that in 10 days(on the 30th) it is the anniversary of his "death".

I really am celebrating.

 

They will be celebrating in DC today when activists pass out thousands of joints to congressmen near Capitol Hill.
"Congressional Democrats and Republicans will be given the opportunity to bake out a “Joint Session” of Congress on Thursday, as Americans across the nation celebrate the unofficial weed-smoking holiday known as 4/20.

Members of DCMJ, a pro-cannabis activist group, plan to camp out near Capitol Hill to puff-puff-pass out at least 1,000 free marijuana joints to members of Congress, congressional staffers, interns and credentialed members of the press. The group offers to give out two joints per person, as long as the tokers are older than 21."

I love how advertisers ramp up their 4/20 ads and target weed smokers on this day.

I remember the old Pepsi ad "Today's to do list: absolutely nothing" lol.

Then came The Big Gulp.

 

Let us take you back to 1971 to a high school 30 minutes north of San Francisco. A group of students who called themselves The Waldos heard that there was an abandoned patch of weed that belonged to a Coast Guard stationed by the Point Reyes Lighthouse.

The Coast Guard was worried about his commanding officer finding that patch, and so, he drew a map for his brother-in-law Bill McNulty, who then shared said map with his friends, The Waldos.

And so, The Waldos embarked on an adventure. Meeting up at 4:20pm, they smoked up before looking for that green treasure.

But it wasn't that easy, and this adventure would continue on for weeks. As a reminder to one another, The Waldos would say "4:20 Louie" when they saw each other in the hallways, which was ultimately shortened to just "4:20."

The green treasure was never found, but The Waldos would continue to signal 4:20 to each other as a code for "it's time to smoke."

This code was spread further when one of the Waldos' older brother, who managed two of The Grateful Dead sidebands, gave The Waldos access to all the rehearsals and parties.

Our friends over at High Times eventually adopted the phrase and over the years, it stuck. Smoking at 4:20pm became smoking on 4/20, at 4:20pm. As for The Waldos? They're still alive and well, and they share their story through their site, 420waldos.com.
