Kathy Griffin spins seamlessly between Trump, the Kardashians

A little under a month ago, a controversial tweet about Donald Trump’s 10-year-old son, Barron, got “Saturday Night Live” writer (and former Chicagoan) Katie Rich suspended from the show indefinitely.

Well, anyone who thought Rich’s tweet was in poor taste should be glad they missed comedian Kathy Griffin’s two sold-out, high-energy, stream-of-consciousness sets at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday night, where her subjects included the entire Trump family (including a few unprintable remarks about Barron), her love of the elderly (everyone over 80 is a member of the Illuminati, she avows) and her usual insights into Hollywood culture.

Griffin is a firecracker best known for her reality series “My Life on the D-List” and has certainly never shied away from controversy—in fact, it’s one of the cornerstones of her brand of tell-all comedy.

The Grammy- and Emmy-winning comedian’s current “Celebrity Run-In Tour" may be centered on celebrity gossip (and launched in support of her recent book, “Kathy Griffin’s Celebrity Run-Ins: My A-Z Index”), but the Trump administration has Griffin feeling much more political.

“I will not be holding back in this political environment,” she declared in the first few minutes of her two-hour 6 p.m. set. “I’ve decided to become worse,” she vowed, to applause, tacking on an additional laugh line for good measure: “Because I’m a lady.”

Dressed all in black with her signature red locks framing her expressions of bewilderment and mischief, Griffin bemoaned that “political correctness” has become something that conservatives now bemoan. “I’m going to be old-fashioned politically incorrect,” she declared.

And while Griffin certainly made good on that promise, she also made good on the promise implicit in any Kathy Griffin show (especially one with “Celebrity” in the title): there will be celebrity talk, it will be told breathlessly, and it will be much more silly than scandalous.

Which is why, in the military, one salutes the uniform. Not the man/woman. Respect is PRESUMED, not EARNED.

Besides, I doubt this Aya La Roux person can name a single person on earth who gives a shit whether they have "earned" her respect. She can take her respect and pry it up her bunghole.

 

I have no respect for France or its people. After the 9/11 attacks they turned their backs on us. Many Americans haven't forgotten this. I hope that they don't expect the US to save them the next time that they get invaded.

I agree with Clarise. While I did not vote for Clinton or Obama, I had respect for them being the POTUS. While some may not like President Trump, he is POTUS. What Griffin did was disrespectful and crossed the line of basic decency. It was also disrespectful to those who were beheaded by ISIS and made a mockery of their deaths.

 

The untility pole should probably be removed first.

 

I was a vocal critic of Obama. I won't deny it, and certainly everyone here knows it. I even questioned his legitimacy-- not because I thought he was born in Kenya, but because I believed-- and still believe-- that he abrogated his citizenship by declaring fealty to Indonesia as a young adult. But his records are sealed and we don't know the answer to that.

So when he was elected I recognized the validity of his inauguration. As you say, I respected the office. And while I was certainly very critical, I did give him a chance, because I thought it might be good for the country-- the unification of the races and all that. But Obama made it very divisive, with his constant class-baiting. He made things much worse.

 

Kathy got fired. Meanwhile Republicans saw someone threaten to execute and imprison his political opponent and elected him president.

 

Actually it's because you're a racist, and you never gave him a chance. You were here, do you think we forgot?

 

But he had 2 terms (8 years), of course he was given a chance. It's just that he did sweet dick all & now Trump has his chance and there are those that don't want to give him one and there are still cry babies running around too.

We have had 16 years of Democratic leadership in the White House. Now a conservative has been elected so I think we should give him a chance. What Griffin did was wrong. She has made the beheading atrocities being carried out by ISIS a comedic parody. Somehow I don't think that the families of those victims are laughing along with her.

 

Make no mistake about it. She is very satisfied with what she has done. It got her noticed by millions of people.
People are actually talking about her. That was her goal in the first place. She will do whatever she can do to continue bringing attention to herself.

One truthful thing I have read is the hits just keep coming because Griffin has managed to turn the tables on Trump and is now getting quite a bit of support. While Trump's own glaring hypocrisy is getting more and more coverage with not only people like Ted Nuggent but also Trump's own calls for committing violence which did actually happen and his refusal to denounce real violence coming from the right. It is being pointed out that Trump did finally mention the terrorist attack in Portland but it was just standard puff and even then came only after a national outcry. But in every other instance Trump is ignoring the increases in violence and hate crimes coming from his supporters on the right.

 

I personally own three myself. One drives me around, one cooks and cleans and the third steps in when I don't have a date that night.
