Like the deranged King George III, the QAnon lionheart has lost America

“He went mad and lost America”. A conventional summary of King George III, the tragic figure who took on the colonies, sending in his troops to “dominate” the streets and crush resistance. Alas, the war of independence didn’t end well, for George anyway. Defeated, bipolar, suffering frequent manic episodes, he retreated to Windsor Castle having nevertheless amassed an impressive library and a reputation for cultured intelligence.

A couple of centuries and 45 presidents later, Old King Trump sits barricaded in the White House doing nothing much. His face puckered into that trademark rosebud of petulance. Barking at underlings. Pretending HE won because a lot of Democrat votes were from dead people and very illegal. His sulky-toddler folded arms, like that time he refused to say a single kind word when fellow Republican and war hero John McCain died. There’s something almost majestic about Trump’s utter contempt for the office of president.

Karl Marx – apparently the evil genius behind peaceful protest and Medicare – said that historical entities appear twice, “first as tragedy, then as farce”. That feels about right.

King Trump is George’s sequel, the comedy version, his self-parody marching preposterously across Twitter like the mayor of Munchkinland. Maybe when he finally accepts defeat he’ll retreat to Mar-a-Lago. OK, there’s no legacy library, but he has amassed an impressive $1bn in debts. Maybe Trump won’t be remembered for his cultured intelligence, but he can memorise “person, woman, man, camera, TV”. George wouldn’t even have understood what 40% of that list was, so who’s the dumbass?

There is a diagonal career move open to Donald, though – the King’s Gambit. How much would the angry, jilted, merch-hungry Magaverse love the narrative of Trump the King in Exile? King Donald, cruelly usurped by the dark forces of Antifa.

Twenty bucks says Trump’s had himself measured for a suit of ultra-lightweight armour. Maybe he’s already clanking wheezily around the East Wing, admiring himself in the cheval mirrors and practicing sword-lifting. Who knows? Come January this QAnon lionheart could pledge to return to Washington in glory to claim once again his jewelled baseball-cap, to wreak his vengeance. Aye, they’ll mutter, King Trump will be back to slay the Satanist pedophiles and liberate those poor children – disclaimer, not including the 545 separated from their parents by Ice.

And there has always been something monarchical about the Trump dynasty, hasn’t there? Something quite British royal family with veneers about them. The stoical wife, accommodating a sexual cavalcade of hush-money freelancers because that’s just the way things have always been done in medieval Europe. The dutiful daughter, special adviser on the economic empowerment of women, one in particular, and her husband the Duke of Nottingham. The two princes, their consciences left blank for sponsorship opportunities.

I wonder what George III – a patron of the arts – would make of Trump, who hasn’t read more than a cereal box in his entire life. Weirdly, maybe they’d get along. George would certainly understand the aesthetic of Trump Tower, with its garish abundance of gold. One of George’s first acts as king was to commission the spectacularly hideous gold state coach, a horse-drawn carriage still in use today. Trump can’t have seen it, or he’d have surely ordered a golf cart facsimile by now.

There are interesting parallels too between the fully-deranged George and the stable genius Donald. George would babble incoherently, his “incessant loquacity” continuing far into the night, making less and less sense, until he foamed at the mouth. George also “wantonly chased ladies around the court”, presumably confiding his pick-up technique thus: “I do not e’en tarry. For mark, when thou art of noble birth, they allow it. One may do anything, seize them by ye Cheshire Catte, anything …”

Trump declaring himself King of America – hell, King of the World why not we’re spitballing here – would merely be an intriguing second season of election 2020. We all loved season one. It started strongly, with a just-believable cast. Escalated nicely too, with the money and the violence, the armed convoys of vigilantes and the ululating Christian demon-slayers. It even had Rudy Giuliani going fully “network”. But yeah, elbow-bump to your functioning democracy, which has duly delivered the USA’s latest very-old-guy president.

Mad King Trump may not have conceded, but he seems to have lost all interest in anything presidential. He’s vaguely wondering if it’s worth bombing Iran, but mostly raging at the phantoms who “stole” his realm in a rigged election. William Thackeray wrote of George III: “All history presents no sadder figure than that of the old man, blind and deprived of reason, wandering through the rooms of his palace, addressing imaginary parliaments, reviewing fancied troops, holding ghostly courts …”

I wonder what the voices in Trump’s head are advising now? Retreat to civilian life again, with its legal perils and authorized memoirs? Or fight on as a heavily-photoshopped rebel king determined to leave as much wreckage and misery in opposition as he did in power?

I don’t want to be that pessimist but you know. He only lost half of America, didn’t he?

Mary Trump: The president ‘gaslights himself’ — and is stuck believing there’s no way he could have lost

President Donald Trump’s niece Mary, a psychologist, explained that her uncle might be gaslighting himself at this point in his post-election psychosis.

Speaking to CNN’s Don Lemon on Wednesday, Dr. Trump said that the president has convinced himself of his own reality and stuck on the first four stages of denial.

Lemon noted that it doesn’t appear any Republicans, staff, or family are willing to reinvent Trump while he continues to dispute the election.

“Do you think he believes that, or he’s pulling a thing here, so people think he’s a fighter? He’s got to pay off campaign debts and so on,” asked Lemon.

“As is often the case with Donald, I think both things can be true on some level at the same time,” Dr. Trump said. “He gaslights himself, which is kind of a fascinating thing. You know, he understands what the truth is, but he lies about it to such a degree that it’s not just other people he starts convincing. Plus, as I said, he’s being so enabled, people are giving him hope with these frivolous lawsuits and by still listening to him by blocking the Biden administration at every turn.”

She called her uncle’s behavior “so desperate” and said that it isn’t just that the president is trying to grapple with his loss. He’s “trying to get beyond that to sow a future in which he’s somehow retaining power.”

At the same time, she said he’s also facing potential prosecutions and won’t have the protection of the White House or Bill Barr’s Justice Department. “So, he’s even more tied into this idea that it can’t possibly be the case that he lost.”

Dr. Trump also said that she thinks the president is trying to sabotage the incoming administration, but it isn’t for any specific purpose.

“Donald does not strategize,” she explained. A sentiment New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman reiterated about the president. “I believe other people around him are coming up with strategies to either give him a chance in 2024 or to get as much as they can out of his remaining few days in power. But Donald himself is just ventral.”

Lemon wondered if she meant that Trump can’t help himself. She agreed, saying that Trump is incapable of doing what’s right for the country.

“He’s not most people,” Dr. Trump explained. “He’s worse than most people. He’s damaged in a way most people are not damaged because, you know, it’s not just the fact that undermining the incoming administration is bad for democracy or making people doubt the legitimacy of the election is dangerous to our system. It’s that by dragging his feet, by being such a sore loser, he is continuing to put American lives in danger every day. It’s despicable.”

Trump exhibiting signs of ‘hypomania’ following election defeat: psychiatrist

In a column for USA Today, a psychiatrist affiliated with Weill Cornell Medical Center claimed that, based upon Donald Trump’s recent actions since losing the election to former Vice President Joe Biden, it appears that the president might be experiencing symptoms of “hypomania” which could cause a break with reality.

Writing in partnership with Norman Ornstein of the American Enterprise Institute, Dr. Kenneth Paul Rosenberg claimed that it appears to him that the country may be endangered by the president’s current state of mind.

First stating, “One of us is a psychiatrist, the other a political scientist. We have watched the fiasco since the election with mounting trepidation, from two very different perspectives. But we have a common bond: For more than a decade, each of us has worked to advocate for people with serious mental illness to get treatment. We are coming together now to advocate for immediate intervention for our president,” Rosenberg said there is a major debate in the psychiatric community about diagnosing patients from afar, but that the president’s recent actions need to be noted.

According to the psychiatrist, he’s not surprised that the president is reacting poorly to his election defeat by demanding members of his administration be fired, pushing conspiracy theories and tweeting late into the night, but that president seems to have gone over the edge as of late.

“Many say that Trump’s refusal to agree to a peaceful and orderly concession is just a threat from a selfish man who can’t accept defeat. President-elect Biden calls Trump’s failure to concede an ’embarrassment.’ It is worse. When someone says they are planning their suicide, mental health professionals don’t call it a ‘cry for attention.’ They hospitalize them immediately to prevent harm. When someone threatens homicide, violence or child abuse, we act swiftly to protect potential victims. It is naïve to consider the current acts of President Trump as childish tantrums and nothing more than fodder for late night comedians,” the op-ed states.

Of course to Rosenberg is the fact that the president seems to be suffering from “hypomania” — described by Harvard Health as: “… three of the following symptoms for at least four days: inflated self-esteem or grandiosity; decreased need for sleep; increased talkativeness; racing thoughts or ideas; marked distractibility; agitation or increased activity; excessive participation in activities that are pleasurable but invite personal or fiscal harm (shopping sprees, sexual indiscretions, impulsive business investments, and the like). For mania, the symptoms are mostly the same, except they last at least one week, lead to hospitalization, or include psychotic symptoms (a break with reality).”

According to Rosenberg, “To any first-year psychiatric resident, Trump’s sleepless nights filled with ranting tweets suggest irrational exuberance and lack of control, possibly a sign of a mood disorder called hypomania. His life-long history of disregard for others and deceit, if correct as reported, are characteristic of a personality disorder on the narcissistic and even sociopathic spectrum,” before adding, “President Trump’s particular history and actions create a high index of suspicion for destructive mental processes which are putting the country and its safety and security in jeopardy.”

The op-ed concluded with the authors saying it was their hope the Republican leadership step in immediately and put “constraints on Trump to stop destructive acts,” adding, “… it should be clear that these are not normal nor acceptable actions by an American president.”

‘He’s lost it’: Trump accused of an suffering a ‘deep emotional break’ after election loss

In an examination of Donald Trump’s withdrawal from public appearances following his devastating re-election loss to former Vice President Joe Biden by the Guardian, the director of the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance at the University of Minnesota claim it appears the president has suffered a “deep emotional break” following his re-election loss to former Vice President Joe Biden.

Since the election concluded the president has withdrawn into the White House making, rarely venturing out to meet with the press with the Guardian’s David Smith writing, “There was one thing that even Donald Trump’s harshest critics were never able to accuse him of: invisibility. Yet two weeks after his defeat by Joe Biden in the election, Trump has effectively gone missing in action. Day after day passes without a public sighting. He does not hold press conferences any more. He has even stopped calling into conservative media.”

Calling it a “monumental sulk” by the president, the report notes that somedays we only know that the president is alive due to his tweets.

“Trump’s hermit-like status has proved irresistible to comedians, historians and overseas commentators,” Smith wrote. “He has been compared to a tyrant in a fragile democracy holed up in a presidential palace and plotting either an internal coup or a sudden escape across the border. Late-night TV host Stephen Colbert observed: ‘Well, history famously holds happy endings for autocrats who lose and then retreat to their bunker.'”

Larry Jacobs of the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance, was a bit more pointed and serious in his appraisal of the president’s current state.

“I don’t think we’ve had a president since Richard Nixon who is as far in the bunker and detached from the country as Donald Trump is right now,” he said before adding, “Donald Trump has not only suffered a catastrophic political defeat, he’s clearly also suffering from a deep emotional break. This behavior is even more erratic than usual and he has retreated. He has put himself in a form of psychological isolation. His emotional state is clearly abysmal. In the popular lexicon, he’s lost it.”

“For many observers, Trump’s retreat is the primal instinct of a sore loser. Biographers have told how he was raised by his father to be a ‘killer’ and regard losing as a sign of unforgivable weakness,” Smith added before quoting Gwenda Blair, author of “The Trumps,” who explained, “He always had dad to bail him out before and his ability to bend reality has been validated for him over and over and over. He survived six corporate bankruptcies, two divorces, and each time he bent reality so that he could make a claim that a lot of people accepted that he was a success. The most successful unsuccessful guy ever.”

Experts were shocked by the portrait of President Donald Trump in a bombshell new report.

Posted online by The Washington Post on Saturday night, the story was titled, “20 days of fantasy and failure: Inside Trump’s quest to overturn the election.”

“The facts were indisputable: President Trump had lost. But Trump refused to see it that way,” the newspaper reported. “The result was an election aftermath without precedent in U.S. history. With his denial of the outcome, despite a string of courtroom defeats, Trump endangered America’s democracy, threatened to undermine national security and public health, and duped millions of his supporters into believing, perhaps permanently, that Biden was elected illegitimately.”

The story generated a great deal of commentary online.

Trump’s rant on Fox Business offered a ‘panoply of dementia signs and symptoms’: psychiatrist

Psychiatrist John M. Talmadge, MD noted on Oct. 23. 2019 that his “professional opinion is that Donald J. Trump is impaired to the extent that he is not mentally, emotionally, or cognitively fit to meet the demands of the Presidency; and that he is unable to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution as required by his Oath of Office.”

Since then, just over one year later, Talmadge has not changed his mind.

Mary Trump reveals president’s psychological status to The View: He ‘can’t admit to himself that he lost’ — but won’t run again in 2024

Speaking to “The View” on Thursday, Donald Trump’s niece Mary explained that the president is “a very desperate man” working to appear as if he’s not a loser after losing after the 2020 election.

“We’re seeing a very desperate man,” Dr. Trump explained. He’s “somebody who knows that his best option is to cling to power no matter who gets hurt in the process. Obviously, there really isn’t any way for him to do that legitimately. So, he’s going to pursue whatever illegitimate means that he has at his disposal. And, you know, it’s really troubling because it’s not just that Donald is hurting himself, which he is doing by continuing to play this out to these absurd lengths. he’s doing serious damage to our democracy, to people’s faith in the American electoral process, and he’s also undermining the legitimacy of the incoming administration which is going to make it that much harder for President [Joe] Biden and Vice President [Kamala] Harris to get us out of these interconnected crises that we’re all suffering from right now.”

Joy Behar asked for specifics on how Trump is hurting himself, which Dr. Trump explained is destroying any credibility he had left by “behaving like an immature bully.

“The only thing he has left right now is his grievance,” Dr. Trump continued. “And I think yes, there are some people for whom that won’t change anything, his most ardent supporters aren’t going to be bothered by that at all, but I think it does two things: It is going to increase his irrelevance after the inauguration, and I think it increases the urgency for holding him accountable when he no longer has the protection of the Oval Office.”

Co-host Sunny Hostin noted that Donald Trump continues to claim he won the election, even going so far as to say that the FBI and his own Justice Department was involved in trying to “rig” things against him. Attorney General Bill Barr even came out, saying that the election was legitimate and there was no massive voter fraud in the election. Hostin wondered if Trump really believes he won the election and is being cheated or if he’s just being an opportunist.

“It’s a great question, and it’s pretty complicated because, on the one hand, it is impossible for Donald to believe that he lost,” Dr. Trump explained. “You know, he’s lost before in his life, but he’s never had to be in a situation in which he can’t somehow turn that loss into a win either through cheating or buying his way out of a jam or using somebody else’s connections and power. There’s literally nothing he can do about this. So, it’s sort of unfathomable because in my family, losing was literally the worst thing you could do. So, it’s putting enormous amounts of pressure on him. On the one hand, he can’t admit it to himself because that would suggest that there’s no way for him to get out of this mess. So, he’s going to continue to undermine people’s faith in our government and our institutions, and again, it’s just another 48 days he has to keep, you know, taking a wrecking ball to the United States government.”

Republican consultant Ana Navarro noted that Trump has promised 2020 will not be the end of him and floated the idea of a 2024 campaign.

“Do you think this is something he’s seriously considering or was he talking about being on ‘Dancing with the Stars?'” she asked.

It prompted Dr. Trump to crack up with laughter, noting both aren’t something she’d enjoy seeing.

“I think this initially was probably an idea that was floated to him in order to assuage his wounded ego after he so decisively lost to President Biden, and I think it’s something he clings to as a way to maintain his relevance, which I suggested earlier is going to wane precipitously after the inauguration,” Dr. Trump explained. “And I think it’s a way to keep himself at the center of things. My hope is that the media doesn’t fall for this nonsense.”

She went on to explain that she has several reasons she doesn’t think Trump will run again. First, she said that the most important thing in his life is about to be the lawsuits he’s facing in New York and elsewhere. The financial exposure is another concern. Trump will eventually have his full tax returns revealed to the public and they will likely show that he doesn’t have any money. Already, what the New York Times has revealed shows Trump is in over $500 million in debt and the bills are about to come due. She thinks those things will keep him out of 2024.

Former Trump aide Anthony Scaramucci made a similar comment several weeks ago, saying that once Trump disappears and suddenly isn’t getting the notoriety and non-stop attention that he’ll fade away.

The GOP, however, is forever changed, Hostin noted. But Dr. Trump said that it isn’t so much that Trump changed the GOP, but “he’s revealed its true nature.”

“So, I don’t see the party changing any time soon which is a tragedy for all of us,” she went on. “So Donald absolutely will try to maintain control because that will continue to give him some measure of power. I think he’s much more likely to pursue something in the media though. That way he can have the spotlight trained on him at all times, and he can narrow his focus due to his most fanatical followers.”

When it comes to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Trump said that the poor response from Trump is really just part of their family tradition of seeing illness as weakness.

“In my family, weakness was considered the worst possible thing,” she explained. “So, you know, most people did anything they could in order to pretend that they were strong no matter what was going on, and by weakness, I don’t just mean weakness of character. I mean, being sick made you weak. Having something like alcoholism, which was my dad’s problem made you weak. So Donald can’t bear to be associated with any kind of illness because he thinks that that, in turn, makes him look weak.”

She compared it to the way that Trump has politicized mask-wearing and downplayed the pandemic from the start. All of the protections and cautions that people should be taking to protect themselves and others makes them “lightweights” in Trump’s mind.

“They’re not tough enough to face down this invisible virus which is — it’s not just absurd, it’s dangerous beyond comprehension,” Dr. Trump explained. “As you guys pointed out earlier, almost 3,000 Americans died yesterday. This is — this is beyond comprehension, and it’s only going to get worse. So, we need to start wrapping our heads around that one. So, again, it’s really — it’s not just Donald, although honestly if from the very beginning he had said, ‘wear a mask’ and had worn himself, hundreds of thousands of people would survive, but it’s also GOP leadership who is just following his lead and continuing to do absolutely nothing.”

Mental health experts explain why Joe Biden needs to throw the book at Donald Trump

President-Elect Joe Biden has continually said he hopes to reforge a bipartisan governing consensus when he takes office next month. He has called for a more collegial atmosphere in Washington and “reaching across the aisle” to get the nation back on its feet.

No doubt there is a need for healing divides and finding a common language. Pathological personalities do not respond well to conciliatory gestures, as this may be experienced as coddling, indulging, and giving license to further transgressions. This has been seen with Donald Trump and his cronies, who have used others’ allowance to expand a subculture of violence and abuse. Instead, what gains respect with these personalities are firm boundaries and limit setting, despite their protest.

Additionally, we should show enough respect to hold our fellow human beings accountable to a higher standard even if—and especially if—they cannot do so themselves. As psychiatrists who have a duty to the public’s health, we must also point out that not to collect on the president’s debts and not to compensate the workers he has failed to pay by shifting funds to his family or declaring bankruptcy, would legitimize abuse of the law and be harmful to society.

Not to prosecute for human rights abuses at the southern border or for the assassination of an Iranian general, which could yet plunge the nation into a devastating war, would further encourage a culture of lawlessness. As part of the healing process, Congress should enact or strengthen appropriate legislation.

Boundaries Set the Tone for All Society
Human beings have a strong impulse for a cause greater than themselves.

The draft ended in 1973, and yet currently there are close to 2 million active and reserve members in the United States military. About 2 percent of our current population have served. These are men and women who have volunteered to spend their working lives serving our country and are willing to die for us if it comes to that. This does not include the covert forces of the CIA and contractors in combat zones. Throughout history, humans have suffered martyrdom for faith, gone into battle to serve a king, or fought oppression without considering the real probability of dying. What causes people to disregard basic impulses for survival? Commonly, it is a powerful sense of meaning that comes from belonging to a greater cause. Whether it is a high school pep rally chanting, “We are the Tigers!” or a group of Marines storming a beach against enemy fire, it is our human need to belong that carries us along.

Whereas healthy boundaries and standards can lead this impulse to greater heights, demagogues can alternatively hijack it to darker places by offering quick, easy “belonging” to their ulterior motivations and plans. The contemporary exemplification of this phenomenon is Trumpism and the mass rallies chanting, “Lock her up!” or “USA, USA!” The sense of belonging to an elite group that is more “American” and more “patriotic” that the “other” gives great pleasure and pride, a false sense of superiority that is rewarding—especially to those famished of this feeling. When an otherwise educated and civilized population is subjected to constant propaganda, these appeals to existing prejudices and base impulses can lead to the erosion of ethics and morality, to Nazi Germany. “I was just following orders” is the defense of those who do unthinkable things for group acceptance and approval. A constant barrage of lies and norm violations become doctrine if repeated enough by those in authority, especially when others around them do the same thing.

Mental Impairment Seldom Leads to Exoneration
What of the leaders? Adolf Hitler escaped accountability at Nuremberg by committing suicide, and to avoid the public desecration of his body as happened to fellow criminal Benito Mussolini, he had his body incinerated with gasoline. For what crimes could he have been tried? Lying to the people? Orchestrating mass murder? Persecuting political enemies?

In his defense he could claim mental illness with paranoia, megalomania, brain damage from measles encephalitis, or posttraumatic stress disorder from serving in World War I, but none of these would exonerate. He was clearly acting with premeditation and deliberation as outlined in his bestselling book.

We are not saying Donald Trump is the same as Hitler because as of this date he has not started a World War or invaded Mexico or Canada,. But he is under investigation for numerous state and federal crimes and is the subject of civil suits for libel, defaulted debts, and loans. Should he be exempt from federal prosecution because of a pardon? Should his debts be forgiven because he is an ex-president? Should he not be subject to the law “for the sake of national unity and reconciliation” and, “to avoid a long national nightmare”?

We don’t think so. As forensic psychiatrists, it is not difficult for us to say that an insanity defense for President Trump does not pass the smell test, and failure to prosecute crimes for which the evidence is clear would undermine the very foundation of our justice system. In fact, we are of the opinion that healing cannot—and should not—occur without prosecution.

Holding Leaders Accountable Is Correct Treatment
Bringing a high-profile criminal to justice can actually be healing for our collective mental health. After four years of “alternative” realities toppling our sense of right and wrong, health and pathology, almost half of the nation finds refuge in his cult of supremacy and anger, while the other half is traumatized. Prosecution and clear boundaries can help bring reality back to both parties that have been gaslit into believing untruths, usually at the expense of their interests, their livelihoods, and even their lives.

Firm boundaries are necessary because tolerating intolerance, paradoxically, leads to intolerance and persecution. Likewise, blurring the distinction between health and pathology leads to pathology’s flourishing at the expense of health. As psychiatrists, not politicians, we have an obligation to provide an antidote to delusional thinking and violent behavior, even if the propaganda systems pervading mass media and the Internet will not. The remedy for psychosis is reality checks. In the case of a pathological and criminal president, recommending prosecution is an essential part of setting standards and doing our job as healers.

‘Shared psychosis’: Mental health expert dissects Trump voters’ unwavering support that ‘defies rationality’

Yesterday, Donald Trump gave a 46-minute speech that alarmed many. Here are some of the things he said: “We were leading in all swing states far greater than they ever thought possible.” “Millions of votes were cast illegally[, and] I went from leading by a lot, to losing by a little.”

Those who still have their rationality intact will not find anything compelling about his repetitive arguments and will rather find only his persistence puzzling. But he is conditioning the minds of his followers to take up his cause as their own and going so far as to give implicit orders. I have stated on a number of occasions that mental symptoms can be more persuasive than rational strategy because of their emotional drive. They can recruit you into an alternative system of thinking that defies rationality.

Donald Trump’s former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, and his former attorney have already suggested that he step outside the Constitution to force some sort of military-supervised re-vote. In addition to their corruption, opportunism, and criminal disposition, a powerful emotional drive underlies this alignment. This is an example of what is called “shared psychosis,” or “folie à plusieurs” (madness in several), which is a well-documented phenomenon whose power not be underestimated.

Its impact and danger are huge, as it divides the whole nation into those who are living in reality and those who are not, as we confront two immediate crises: the election and a pandemic that is now killing Americans at the rate of one 9/11 per day.
