Stay-at-home orders extended in parts of Calif.

California extended its stay-at-home orders across several parts of the state.

On Tuesday, the Golden State’s Health Secretary Mark Ghaly announced the extension of orders in both Southern California and the San Joaquin Valley.

Ghaly said the extension is because both region’s ICU capacities have fallen to zero percent. Under the current rules, announced by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) earlier this month, anything below 15 percent warrants a mandatory three-week shutdown.

“We are essentially projecting that the ICU capacity is not improving in Southern California and San Joaquin Valley,” Ghaly said. “And that demand will continue to exceed capacity.”

Ghaly added that if the numbers get any better, the restrictions could be lifted early. However, he noted the progress will be assessed on a daily basis.

Calif. sex offenders may get early parole

The California Supreme Court ruled to uphold a new law that allows for the early release of non-violent sex offenders.

On Monday, the court voted unanimously to uphold part of a ballot measure that gives any “non-violent” inmates a chance at early parole. Proponents of the measure, however, argue they never intended for it to apply to inmates convicted of sex crimes.

On the other hand, the court argues that because of the “plain language” the law was written in, non-violent sex offenders cannot be excluded. Critics of the decision questioned how this benefits the victims.

“We need to protect the public,” Elk Grove Assembly Member Jim Cooper (D) said. “There’s been a lot of legislation from the past 3 or 4 years–and some needed reforms, I’ll agree with you, but we’ve gone way overboard.”

He emphasized that victims should be the top priority when considering legislation reforms. “What are we doing to protect the victims?” Cooper questioned.

The ruling could reportedly allow more than 4,000 nonviolent sex offenders to be released in the state early and on parole.

 

Facebook posts by Mich. mayor spark controversy in town

A Michigan mayor is pushing back against criticism claiming he is trying to incite violence through his Facebook page.

On Monday, Potterville Mayor Bruce Kring slammed local media. He said they were “reporting on memes” and told them to focus on real news. Kring has been vocal about his disapproval of mask mandates and coronavirus restrictions on his Facebook page. His posts were reported to local media.

Some people argued the posts could incite violence as they targeted Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-Mich.), who was the focus of an attempted kidnapping plot earlier this year. One post said: “Either we take power back or we will never be free again. No more asking nicely.”

In response to the criticism, Kring cited his First Amendment rights. He added, Whitmer’s coronavirus policies threaten the freedom of all Michiganders.

Additionally, a number of Michigan residents have shown support for Kring’s message. Duston Twichell, a city councilman in Potterville, said he’s seen the mayor’s post and agrees with him.

“This an incredible overreach and an invasion of personal privacy and the government has no business telling us what we can do,” Twichell stated. “Many people have chastised me for the way I am or the way I act on council and people tell me I need to lead by example, [but] I believe I am doing just that by not conforming [to] the mask laws.”

Some residents have even criticized the professionalism of Michigan’s elected officials over the matter. On the other hand, other Michiganders feel conflicted on how to interpret Kring’s posts.

“He’s right and he’s wrong because it is supposed to keep us safe; we don’t want the coronavirus,” Potterville resident Justice Livingston said. “And in another way, he’s right because it is time for us to finally be free.”

Kring declined an interview with local media. However, he sarcastically stated, “how dare someone have a personal opinion?”

In July 2018, an investigation by the conservative Middle East Forum think tank hit the headlines, after it appeared to reveal that an office within the U.S. Treasury Department had in 2015 signed off on the transfer of $125,000 to the Islamic Relief Agency, a Sudan-based group listed as a funder of terrorism by the Treasury itself.

The 25 July Middle East Forum (MEF) report, which was accompanied by an article in the conservative National Review, reported:


The Middle East Forum has discovered that the Obama administration approved a grant of $200,000 of taxpayer money to an al-Qaeda affiliate in Sudan — a decade after the U.S. Treasury designated it as a terrorist-financing organization. More stunningly, government officials specifically authorized the release of at least $115,000 of this grant even after learning that it was a designated terror organization.

The report gave rise to coverage by the right-wing Daily Wire web site, which attributed the funding decision to former president Barack Obama personally in a headline reading “Obama Knowingly Funded Designated Al-Qaeda Affiliate,”

The Obama administration approved a $200,000 grant to a group in Sudan with ties to Al Qaeda even though it had been designated a terrorist-financing organization by the U.S. years earlier, a conservative think tank revealed. Further, an agency official acknowledged the prior administration allowed taxpayer money to flow to the group even after its designation was discovered.

 

Calif. officials claim 0% ICU availability despite many counties reporting open hospital beds

State officials claim Southern California’s ICU capacity is at zero percent despite evidence revealing otherwise.

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) extended the southern part of the state’s stay-at-home orders over concerns hospital beds are in short supply. On Tuesday, California Health and Human Services Secretary Mark Ghaly made the announcement. He said the order will be lifted once ICU beds reach 15 percent availability.

However, some Southern California hospitals said they have more hospital beds open than they normally do this time of year.

“We do have capacity [and] we’re seeing on average about 50 patients per day, less than what we normally see this time of year,” Diane Hansen, CPA and CEO of Palomar Health, said. “I think that’s important for a couple reasons because while we have capacity, my biggest concern is our ability to staff beds should the pandemic surge become greater.”



On the same day that California leaders declared an extension of the stay-at-home order, San Diego County reported that ICUs have 19 percent availability. Additionally, over 20 percent of general hospital beds remain empty and reserved for potential coronavirus patients.

According to official government data, the total hospital capacity in Orange County is at 76 percent with nine percent availability in ICUs as of December 17.

Other counties, including Fresno County, have reported slim availability for ICU beds. Local officials are setting up field hospitals for additional patients, which is similar to what hospitals did during the 2017 to 2018 flu season. However, during that time, businesses remained open and local governments did not mandate lockdowns.

According to a 2018 report from ‘Time Magazine,’ California hospitals said they were hard-hit and had to set up tents outside of emergency departments to accommodate flu patients. The ‘Los Angeles Times’ also reported hospitals were so full that there was only room for standing and many patients had to be treated in hallways.


Across the U.S., the CDC noted the number of hospitalizations exceeded the number of staffed beds for that flu season, but even then officials did not mandate mask-wearing or economic shutdowns.
