So are we back to sacrificing the old, sick (and poor no doubt), on the alter of short term quarterly gains?

Pour more money into airlines and cruise ships etc. because we are shackled to the right wing paradigm of personal responsibility.

    What next?

    One dollar one vote?

Not at all, it is a valid question. Why not gather all of us old farts and lock us up away from the general population. We don’t contribute squat to welfare of the rest.

PS, I really love how you take those death defying leaps of nonsense.

may be usefull and pertinent information for some.
    from WHO.
    *

The percentage of people who need to be immune in order to achieve
    herd immunity
    varies with each disease.

For example, herd immunity against measles
requires about 95% of a population to be vaccinated.
The remaining 5% will be protected by the fact that measles will not spread among those who are vaccinated.
    For polio,
    the threshold is about 80%.

The proportion of the population that must be vaccinated against COVID-19 to begin inducing herd immunity
    is not known.

This is an important area of research and will likely vary according to the community, the vaccine, the populations prioritized for vaccination, and other factors.

    * * *
The vast majority of people in most countries remain susceptible to this virus. Seroprevalence surveys suggest that in most countries,
less than 10% of the population have been infected with COVID-19.

We are still learning about immunity to COVID-19.
Most people who are infected with COVID-19 develop an immune response within the first few weeks, but we don’t know how strong
or lasting that immune response is,
or how it differs for different people.

There have also been reports of people infected with COVID-19 for a second time.

Until we better understand COVID-19 immunity,
it will not be possible to know how much of a population is immune
and how long that immunity last for,
    let alone make future predictions.

These challenges should preclude any plans that try to increase immunity within a population by allowing people to get infected.

    * * * *
We are only beginning to understand the long-term health impacts among people who have had COVID-19,
including what is being described as ‘Long COVID.’

The incubation period of COVID-19, which is the time between exposure to the virus and symptom onset,
    is on average 5-6 days,

but can be as long as 14 days.

Thus, quarantine should be in place for 14 days
from the last exposure to a confirmed case.

Former anti-masker in Florida hospital now warns Covid-19 not like the flu

A man who did not believe Covid-19 was real and refused to wear a mask has sent an emotional plea from his hospital bed, where he is currently fighting the virus.

Struggling to breathe, Chuck Stacey warns people in the video to believe the dangers of Covid-19.

    "I didn't wear a mask. I should've. I didn't," Stacey says while struggling to breathe.

"I believed this was just the flu,
that it was all going to go away,
    that it was political.
I didn't think a mask would help," he added.

"You don't want to end up like me. I'm having trouble breathing. I may have to be intubated if I get any worse."
    JGPKUY66CO6VYRLWGEPZRV3ULA.jpeg

"Do it for your children, your loved ones. Do it for yourself."

Back in May, Stacey attacked employees at a doughnut store for wearing masks.

    he ranted
"I have to say I have had it with the masks that the employees are being forced to wear," he wrote on Facebook then.

"It's just another example of the continued over-reaction to this situation … Please stop so when we come to eat we can enjoy our meal without feeling sorry for the employees."

      Hope he recovers completely.

But, to read the post, it seems that once again the implication is that wearing a mask protects the wearer from contracting the virus. It does not.

It does reduce the chance that the wearer will broadcast the virus in mucus or saliva droplets, if he is carrying active virus.

As per usual , you are partially correct.
      But
      only partially.
In fact the correct wearing of the best quality masks , handled correctly can increase your protection from contracting covid 19.
As is the case with frontline workers wearing propper high quality PPE

However , like everything , nothing on its own guarantees full protection , and one simple mistake with any measure can result in a failure of the whole regime.

So if you want to protect yourself , educate yourself ,
and take all measures properly ,
each in conjunction with the others.

Critically , use , handle , and remove and dispose of masks correctly.

This should be a lesson to all , and should have been from the start.

This is how bad covid can get

IF it mutates to a more deadly form.

Since 2012, an outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus has affected several countries, primarily in its namesake, the Middle East. The virus, which causes Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS),
is a novel coronavirus (just like covid19)
that was first identified in a patient from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on June 6, 2012.

Sporadic cases, small clusters, and large outbreaks have been reported in 24 countries, with over 1,000 cases of the virus and over 400 deaths, up to the middle of 2015.

    * * *
    Now note:
    MERS
killed 400 of the just over 1,000
    it infected.

THAT IS A MORTALITY RATE OF
    40%

Now we have a similar virus rampant world wide which is varying/mutating all the time , every day ,
and which has recently mutated to a faster spreading form.

This means it can and will vary faster ,
    and
    as it is going ,
infect more people more quickly ,
with every infection being a new opportunity
    to vary/mutate again.

To continue to allow this is sheer madness.

If you look at what is known ,
    compared to the old form,

for every 100 infections the old form caused ,
    this new faster spreading form
can infect 170 in the same time frame.

    Compare
    old
    100 , 200 , 400 , 800 , 1600
    new
    170 , 340 , 680 , 1360 , 2720

that is a very simplistic illustration ,
but a valid way to simply illustrate the potential.

In fact , if you do a more complicated analysis of the possible effect , the likely outcome gets exponentially worse ,
because of the shorter/quicker spreading time.

Each phase takes less time .

Therefore , depending on the actual rate , we might get to the 5th stage in the same time as the old variant got to the 3rd stage
    (for example)

Re the above , post #3188

The other thing that should be noted , and taken very seriously ,
is the fact that by its ability to overwhelm by sheer numbers ,
if allowed to go unchecked ,
    the new quicker spreading variants
(of which thee are already at least three known)
will become the dominant , most common form ,
and eventually , possibly the only one in the worst hit areas.

Given the lack of will and ability to control the slower version ,
    that could become very scary
    very quickly.

Today I read an article about New Zealand reaction to the threat of Covid-19 virus and the result of their action. It is impressive, worthy of praise and perhaps a benchmark for others.

In a nutshell they securely closed the country to ALL international travel, and imposed a mandatory testing and a 3-12 day quarantine for all arrivals. All of the other lockdown procedures were implemented early in the year, and were relaxed when the rate of new infection was near zero.

This contrasts sharply with the measures taken in most other countries, notably the US and the UK. Reasons for the different approaches in the US are many, first being scale of the size of population and ports of entry. NZ is a very small country, with a fairly homogeneous population, the US is over 30 times larger and 70 times more populated, with an extremely diverse mix of resident. The US has over 3 times the number of undocumented residents than NZ’s total population. This diversity and political situational differences alone make voluntary compliance with lockdown rules virtually impossible.

Locking the borders presents another major difference, 6 international airports versus 330, hundreds of times more international travelers.

In retrospect it is easy to see the errors, they are still being made, but the difference between the effect on the average citizen is huge. Ten months of lockdown versus two weeks, no wonder our NZ posters can’t fathom the problems faced by the average US citizen.

    For any interested ;
again , in the interest of debunking bullshit misinformation.

Our lockdown was not as severe as some ,
not as some would have you believe.

We had to stay in our "bubble" ,
but we were not restricted from going outside in any way , for exercise , walking , cycling , or even driving within about two miles to exercise.

But while out we still had to keep to our own bubble , and ensure distancing between bubbles (even in confined spaces , a MINIMUM of 2 meters , near 7 feet)

One person from each bubble was allowed to go shopping and get essentials whenever needed.

Supermarkets etc allowed to stay open , had marked spacings of two meters , and limits on numbers in , with spaced queueing outside.

Anyone in solo isolation (another words , in a single person household , in a single person bubble)
was allowed to join/visit another in the same ,
    and have shared isolatiin bubbles

    Holy shit !

You'd think with 660,000 new cases
and over 7,100 deaths in two days ,

that people would figure out for themselves that this shouldn't be allowed to continue ,
    and
take at least some of the simple precautions to stop the rot.

We just don't understand how people can put up with that day after day ,
    week after week
    month after month.

and it dose get discussed quite a lot ,
how lucky we are , and how sad the situation is elsewhere.
and we do find it quite incredible that the citizens put up with it.

Of course you can’t understand it, because you have been incredibly lucky, you live in a tiny country that is surrounded by the sea. It’s just too bad that others don’t share that luxury, plus the added luxury that your smug heart gives you.

      Typical avoidance and obfuscation.

We're well aware we're lucky to have an ocean between us and trouble , but that's little insulation in this modern era.

If you go back and read the information as I've suggested before , you'd know , we had many hundreds of flights incoming weekly ,
and huge volumes of traffic into the multitude of ports all around our relatively very long coastline
(which is how several of our clusters got started , including the second outbreak in August)

At the same time , even the US had effectively exactly the same advantage , being insulated frim both Europe and Asia by big oceans , in the time before it took hold there ,
had your authorities taken timely steps.
But you squandered that advantage ,
      literally.
Your relatively (to resources and inferstructure) short borders were not any threat in the beginning , and you already had massive resources [and a wall , lol ] centered around them anyway

Give it a rest, I’ve applauded your country for the swift and effective way it handled the potential pandemic. Take a bow and enjoy the benefits you have.

Where we differ is when YOU try to compare the difficulties in applying such efforts in my country. There is nothing similar between the two countries except that we are populated by humans and share the same planet.

You asked me to read what you posted, and I have, several times. All I ask is that you do the same for what I posted, because you obviously did not.

Operation Cluster Fuck Snail's Pace continues at a rate it would take close to 10 years to vaccinate all Americans that want the vaccine. Because their was no national plan to actually vaccinate people. Not enough resources in people, infrastructure, and money to set up the needed programs for mass vaccinations.

And when we look at this just know the Q uisling above was responsible for this cluster fuck long before Trump ever showed by because TRAITORS like him practicing the lie of conservatism have deliberately crippled our federal government.

If true this would be really good news. Health experts all over the world are scared shitless by the new variant of COVID 19 because saying it can spread much more easily is one thing but actually seeing how much faster it is spreading is another matter and they are predicting in very short order the new strain will be the dominate strain.
