Fox News contributor Kat Timpf on Sunday blasted "puritanical" liberals for opposing a suspected sexual affair between Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and an underage girl.

During an appearance on Fox News, Timpf observed that the Gaetz scandal has "everything."

"It's got sex, it's got drugs, it has Matt Gaetz, who is a very polarizing figure and he's a very staunch supporter of Donald Trump so people either really love him or they really hate him," she opined.

"But I think it's been really interesting," the Fox News pundit continued. "If buying expensive gifts for women and sleeping with them -- that isn't illegal. We still need to figure out exactly, there are receipts coming in, we still need to figure out more about what happened."

Timpf added: "But it's been interesting to see some in the media on the left who normally wouldn't be so puritanical about something like that, being very puritanical and not just look at following the facts of it. Which again, it's bizarre so it's hard to know what those are."

The scandal involving Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) continues to rage in Washington as Gaetz alleges a conspiracy to extort $25 million and the New York Times has reported an investigation into his traveling across state lines with a minor for sex. Both are serious allegations and someone is clearly lying. The question is why, after a year of reported investigation, the underlying facts appear unresolved. Either this girl was 17 or she was not. Either Gaetz traveled with her or he did not. Then there is a taped call that could prove the veracity of key witnesses. In other words, there is raging speculation over facts that should be easily and already established. Why?

As many legal pundits have pointed out its fairly common to have extortion attempts that involve someone committing a crime. But that is because a crime was committed. And just because someone tried to extort money over that does not mean the crime has not been committed. In fact its often one crime leading to another. They also point out that what Gaetz is trying to claim is extortion does not appear to be the case. Just a very far fetched conspiracy theory.

On Friday, the Wall Street Journal quoted former Rep. David Jolly (R-FL) saying that Florida Republicans know that the political career of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) is over — and that politicians don't recover from scandals of this sort.

"His political brethren are already jockeying to take his seat. They're not insulating him — they're already assuming that Matt's political career is over," said Jolly, a moderate Republican and longtime critic of former President Donald Trump and his allies. "These scandals hit a certain point where there's no escape. We've clearly hit that point for Matt in Florida politics."

For the time being, Gaetz has no plans to resign, telling reporters in a text that "of course" he wouldn't step down.

Gaetz, a key ally of Trump in Congress, is facing a Department of Justice investigation into whether he paid to transport a minor over state lines for sex. He is also facing allegations that he may have used drugs or campaign cash in his transactions with women he slept with, and that he shared naked pictures of his sexual conquests with people in the U.S. Capitol.

He denies all of these accusations and claims he and his family are victims of an extortion racket by a former Justice Department official.

There is no DOJ connection involved in the alleged extortion attempt. The person they are accusing worked for the FBI decades ago.

“Over the past several weeks my family and I have been victims of an organized criminal extortion involving a former DOJ official seeking $25 million while threatening to smear my name. ... I demand the DOJ immediately release the tapes, made at their direction, which implicate their former colleague in crimes against me based on false allegations," he said.

 

Trying to get $25million out of a Congressman by threatening to make a false accusation against him, would seem to be a fairly weak ploy and the fast way to meet an FBI agent. No need to keep any of that secret.

Even if the extortionists in question, was a former FBI agent, the idea they could make up an investigation, or make one go away is simply not a credible threat or offer. One story says the investigation was folded into a sales pitch, where the rescue of an American hostage in Iran would carry enough political capital, the Biden administration would forgive all sins.

That sounds kind of incredible, as well, but wouldn't make the standard of extortion.

Since former Attorney General Barr required any investigation of a Congress person to approved at the highest levels, so Barr could end all of this with a simple statement of the facts. It's a pretty cold move on Barr's part to let Gaetz twist in the wind.

So far, neither Barr or anyone else who would have reliable information about the investigation or what had been revealed by any investigation, have remained silent.

In the meantime, Gaetz is left with nothing but his "that's my story and I'm sticking to it" defense. Even that gets weaker by the day. He says "It is verifiably false that I have traveled with a 17 year old woman." However, that's not the problem at hand. The crime is paying for her travel in order to have sex with her. He didn't have to be with her on the plane.


What really sucks for Gaetz is no one will defend him, except to say, "Nothing has been proven, yet."

 

Nothing has been proven and nothing has been charged.
And its only the despicables who keep this story alive.
Until the facts are known, it isn't much of a story.

 

Yes, just them, the FBI, and Bill Barr.

You, on the other hand, are a true friend of Matt.

 

And David McGee says he suing Gaetz for defamation because he used his name on a Fox news interview. Seems there may be nothing to this claim of extortion.

 

Gaetz, Trump, Bill Barr, and Republicans in congress have known Gaetz is under investigation since at least last August. So if they are looking for leaks out of the DOJ they need to be looking someplace else. It was the worst kept secret on Capitol Hill.

And the conservative/Republicans claiming extortion are talking shit they don't even fucking know.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out. Nearly every legal pundit has said Gaetz really needs to shut up because he just keeps digging himself in deeper and you can't lie your way out of documented evidence.

I’m guessing this former staffer was interviewed by the FBI in relation to the possible extortion scheme and it’s going to spun as this was all in an attempt to smear Gaetz.

FWIW - the investigation into a possible extortion scheme is entirely separate from the investigation into Gaetz’s actions, allegedly child sex trafficking and other crimes including the use of campaign funds to pay for prostitutes, etc.

Under questioning from reporters, Nelson admitted that he had no evidence that could discredit the investigation.

"I'm not here to provide any degree of evidence in support of Congressman Gaetz," Nelson said, "only to discredit these baseless allegations."

"What of the investigation do you know that would lead you to discredit the investigation?" a reporter pressed.

"I don't have any specific knowledge on the investigation," Nelson replied, "or any of the facts that are involved with the investigation."
