The White House Council and aides were a buffer between pardon seekers and Trump and probably didn't even tell him about Gaetz. Insiders reveal new details about Matt Gaetz and his Florida pal: 'They’re the embodiment of Trumpism'

In a report detailing the symbiotic relationship between Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and his longtime friend Joel Greenberg -- now awaiting trial on a 33 count indictment ranging from financial crimes to sex trafficking of a minor -- Florida locals admit they are surprised at the turn of events that has the GOP lawmaker fighting for his political career.

According to Politico's Marc Caputo, the two sons of wealthy families who are at the center of a scandal that is being investigated by the Justice Department, are well known for their exploits and associates believe it was only a matter of time before it caught up to them.

"Their relationship is central to the allegations against Gaetz, a fierce Donald Trump ally who denies having sexual relations with a 17-year-old and prostitutes. Together, the taxman and the congressman shared a life-in-the-fast lane existence that contradicted the staid image that most elected officials are careful to maintain," Caputo wrote. "The only-in-Florida political drama has taken one bizarre twist after another in the week since the news broke of the investigation into Gaetz. It's a tale marked by a complicated extortion allegation involving Iran and Israel, alleged sexual crimes, a tangential cameo of a popular conservative cartoonist and even a porn star."

According to local lawyer David Bear, who represents a rival of Greenberg, "You couldn't make this story up, it's so crazy," before adding, "Ultimately, it's about abuse of power and how the Republican Party lost its way with guys like this. As one of the few remaining Never Trump Republicans, nothing could make me happier than seeing Matt Gaetz and his kind being taken down. They're the embodiment of Trumpism."

Noting that the relationship between the two is not one of equals -- with Gaetz a high-profile member of the House and Greenberg toiling in local Florida politics -- an associate of the two said they had one major connection.

"Joel idolized Matt," explained the friend, who asked not to be named and added, "And since they both loved beautiful women and Joel seemed to have endless access to them, it was definitely an additional incentive for Matt to stick around. Also, Joel is one of the funnest people you can hang out with."

According to those who know the two, it was not unusual for them to "share" girlfriends, with Caputo writing, "Gaetz described Greenberg as a 'wingman' to some acquaintances, and even promoted him as a potential congressional candidate. Now some suspect Greenberg might be cooperating with prosecutors to build a case against Gaetz."

Greenberg might have good reason to cooperate since Politico is reporting that friends of his have been speaking with investigators about comments he made.

"Less than a year after winning office, the indictment says, Greenberg engaged in a sexual relationship with a minor and, using his special access to a federal ID system as tax collector, 'obtained, disclosed, transferred, and used personal information of individuals … including individuals with whom [he] was engaged in 'sugar daddy' relationships'," the Politico report states, "Three Greenberg friends — including one who testified before the federal grand jury investigation into Greenberg — told POLITICO they personally heard him boast about his 2017 relationship with a then-17-year-old girl they claim went on to work in pornography."

One other mutual friend reinforced the claim that Gaetz and Greenberg are deeply tied to each other, telling Politico, "Sure, Matt and Joel have a taste for pretty women like any red-blooded American male, but their relationship was personal and political beyond that. They're both MAGA, both into cryptocurrency and they're both really smart."

Add U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz to the list of men now-former President Donald Trump has defended when faced with allegations related to sexual misconduct or abuse.

"Congressman Matt Gaetz has never asked me for a pardon," Trump said in a statement Wednesday after The New York Times reported that Gaetz asked the Trump White House for a blanket pardon.

"It must also be remembered that he has totally denied the accusations against him," Trump added, a statement incredibly similar to those he has made when he defended Roy Moore, Brett Kavanaugh, Bill O'Reilly, and his own White House staff secretary Rob Porter. (CNN detailed some of Trump's defenses in 2018.)

Trump has also rushed to defend Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), accused of ignoring multiple college wrestlers complaining to him of the team doctor's sexual abuse or misconduct when Jordan was their coach.

"I don't believe them at all. I believe him," Trump said of Jordan, calling him "one of the most outstanding people I've met since I've been in Washington. I believe him 100%. No question in my mind. I believe Jim Jordan 100%. He's an outstanding man."

And Trump defended the late Roger Ailes, who faced allegations of sexual harassment which ended his career as Fox News' CEO and Chairman. “I can tell you that some of the women that are complaining, I know how much he's helped them, and even recently," Trump said in Ailes' defense.

In defending Roy Moore, accused of child rape and sexual assault, Trump said: “If you look at all the things that have happened over the last 48 hours. He totally denies it. He says it didn't happen. And look, you have to look at him also."

Trump defended Rob Porter by saying, “He says he's innocent and I think you have to remember that," and, “He said very strongly yesterday that he's innocent, but you'll have to talk to him about that."

Of Bill O'Reilly, Trump said, "I don't think Bill did anything wrong."

In 2018 Vox reported on "a passage from Bob Woodward's new book, Fear:"

Trump gave some private advice to a friend who had acknowledged some bad behavior toward women. Real power is fear. It's all about strength. Never show weakness. You've always got to be strong. Don't be bullied. There is no choice.

“You've got to deny, deny, deny and push back on these women," he said. “If you admit to anything and any culpability, then you're dead. That was a big mistake you made. You didn't come out guns blazing and just challenge them. You showed weakness. You've got to be strong. You've got to be aggressive. You've got to push back hard. You've got to deny anything that's said about you. Never admit."

Trump has been accused of sexual assault or sexual misconduct by dozens of women.

CBS News revealed Wednesday that Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) took a trip to the Bahamas in late 2018 or early 2019 that triggered the sex trafficking investigation, sources revealed.

According to the report, "Gaetz was on that trip with a marijuana entrepreneur and hand surgeon named Jason Pirozzolo, who allegedly paid for the travel expenses, accommodations, and female escorts."

The Justice Department is investigating to determine if the escorts were illegally trafficked across state or international lines for sex with Gaetz or merely as escorts that do not provide anything other than companionship.

"Traveling across state lines is what creates a federal hook for a prosecution," said former prosecutor Arlo Devlin-Brown. "It doesn't matter that [Gaetz] personally paid them as long as he knows someone is doing that."

The other question for investigators is whether Gaetz accepted paid escorts in exchange for something.

Pirozzolo did an interview with Ganjapreneur.com in July 2018 where he said that Gaetz was going to announce federal legislation to allow federal research into the benefits of cannabis.

"In fact, Congressman Matt Gaetz is in the process of working on legislation up in Washington, D.C., that will help facilitate research on the nationwide level. And we should see a lot of good benefit from them," Pirozzolo said in the interview. "We've got Congressmen that are actually dealing with this federal legislation right now."

Gaetz denies all of this.

"Rep. Gaetz has never paid for sex, nor has he had sex with an underage girl," said the Congressman's spokesperson said. "What began with blaring headlines about 'sex trafficking' has now turned into a general fishing exercise about vacations and consensual relationships with adults. Yesterday, we even learned of some nonsense 'pardon' story that turned out to be false, and today it's just more euphemism. It's interesting to watch the Washington wheels grinding so hard every time one of their falsehoods gets knocked down."

Gaetz reportedly requested a blanket pardon from former President Donald Trump's White House before leaving office.

It was reported Tuesday that Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) asked President Donald Trump for a blanket pardon for any possible crimes.

Wednesday, Trump denied the claim, saying in a statement, "Congressman Matt Gaetz has never asked me for a pardon. It must also be remembered that he has totally denied the accusations against him."

Former FBI Deputy Director Andy McCabe explained Wednesday, that the reason Trump likely didn't know anything about the pardon request is that the New York Times report said that Gaetz went through the White House staff. "Likely the counsel's office," he said.

CNN also reported earlier Wednesday that the Trump team never seriously considered the request.

"According to two people familiar with the matter ... Gaetz's request was never seriously considered by the White House because they decided preemptive pardons were off the table," said the report.

But now it appears the investigation into the sex trafficking started with Gaetz and a trip with escorts to the Bahamas that led to Greenberg. He's looking at 33 federal charges and its kind of Gaetz's fault so why not cooperate.
