12-year-old boy, 14-year-old girl involved in shootout with Florida deputies
DELTONA, Fla. (NewsNation Now) — Deputies in central Florida shot a 14-year-old girl who they say shot at them multiple times using a pump-action shotgun.

The teen, who had run away from a juvenile group home with a 12-year-old boy, was in stable condition after surgery, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said in a news conference late Tuesday.

An angry Chitwood said the assault on law enforcement officers by two armed children was “something I’ve never seen in 35 years in policing.”

The group home in Deltona reported the pair missing on Tuesday evening, telling authorities the boy is diabetic and needed insulin every four hours. They said the girl hit a staff member with a stick before running away, a sheriff’s news release said.

As deputies were searching the area around 7:30 p.m., a passerby flagged them down and reported hearing glass breaking at a nearby house.

Deputies saw the pair inside the home and contacted its owner, who said no one was supposed to be at the home. The homeowner also informed the sheriff’s office that there was a shotgun, an AK-47 and 200 rounds of ammunition inside.

Shooter would post video, but you know, 12 and 14 years old ..............

SC Cop Told Woman To Meet For Sex Acts So Her Tickets Would Be Dismissed, SLED Says
A former South Carolina police officer accused of soliciting sexual acts in exchange for traffic ticket dismissals was charged and arrested Friday, according to South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED).

James Rondell Williams, 29, was charged with misconduct in office. He was a police officer with the Bennettsville Police Department at the time of the incidents.

According to a probably cause affidavit included in the warrant, Williams “solicited $100 and sexual acts” from a woman in exchange for him dismissing two traffic tickets that he previously issued to her while on duty on Jan. 2.

He then attempted to meet the woman, while on duty, and the woman didn’t show up.

Rioters Set Fire, Loot in Minneapolis after Police Shoot Allegedly Armed Suspect
Rioters in Minneapolis broke windows, set a dumpster on fire and looted local businesses Thursday night after a police officer shot and killed a suspect who was wanted for unlawful possession of a firearm, according to reports.

The suspect, who was also reportedly a murder suspect, refused to follow commands from the U.S. Marshal Service taskforce, according to FOX 9 Minneapolis. The suspect pulled out a gun during the attempted arrest in a parking garage.

The officers then shot at the suspect, the report says. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No Minneapolis police officers were involved, according to Reuters.

Following the shooting, a few dozen protesters reportedly gathered around a dumpster near the scene as it melted into a “puddle of fire,” according to KSTP-TV, tossing items into the dumpster to keep it burning while chanting anti-police slogans.

Three Columbus Police Officers Charged Over George Floyd Protests

Three Columbus, Ohio, police officers have been criminally charged for how they responded to protests over the murder of George Floyd in May 2020, the New York Times reports. The three officers in question, Traci Shaw, Holly Kanode and Phillip Walls, are all charged with dereliction of duty. But Shaw and Walls are also accused of assault—pepper-spraying people without provocation—while Kanode is charged with falsification after body-camera footage was said to disprove her claim about a protester attacking a fellow officer. An attorney representing the three cops indicated they planned to fight the charges, vowing, “We’re going to fight this tooth and nail at trial.”

The charges against the three officers come as the Columbus Police Department has faced criticism for the fatal shooting of Ma’khia Bryant, a 16-year-old Black girl, in April. Last month, the department shelled out $10 million to the family of Andre Hill, 47, an unarmed Black man who was shot and killed by a cop in December. The officer in question, 44-year-old Adam Coy, has since been fired and charged with murder.

Ex-Prison Sergeant Gets Jail Time for Trading McDonald’s for Sex With Inmate

Randy Beehler, a former Minnesota corrections sergeant, has been sentenced to 120 days in jail and seven years probation for trading a McDonald’s meal for sex with an inmate he was transporting. Beehler pleaded guilty in March to fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct over the Sept. 2019 incident. Beehler stopped to get food while transferring a female inmate from Olmsted County Jail to Minneapolis. After the inmate said she’d “do anything” to eat, Beehler brought the woman to the front seat and exposed his penis, prosecutors said. The woman performed oral sex on him, according to the charges. At first, Beehler denied the allegations but eventually admitted to it. Minnesota prison officials announced Beehler’s termination on Wednesday.

State Autopsy Confirms Andrew Brown Jr. Was Killed by Shot to Back of Head

Andrew Brown Jr. was killed by a shot to the back of his head, a state autopsy report has concluded. Brown, who was killed by sheriff’s deputies who tried to serve an arrest warrant at his North Carolina home on April 21, was also shot in his right arm. The report confirms the conclusion of an independent report the Brown family ordered, though the two differ in how many gunshot wounds Brown suffered. Pasquotank County deputies opened fire seconds after arriving at Brown’s home. The district attorney said said the shooting was warranted because Brown, who was in his car when they arrived, started driving, thereby putting the officers’ lives in danger. However, his family says bodycam footage shows he was only trying to flee and the officers could have easily stepped out of the way.

Two officers involved in the shooting returned to work last week after being placed on leave, while another will depart the office at the end of the month.

Closed cold case murder tied to ousted Tennessee governor (yahoo.com)
Closed cold case murder tied to ousted Tennessee governor
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — A former Tennessee governor's administration helped fund a contract murder of a key federal witness decades ago while embroiled in the state's largest political scandal, law enforcement officials announced Wednesday.

The new details revealed for the first time Wednesday have elements that ring of a movie: a trusted ally of union boss Jimmy Hoffa gunned down after testifying about a corrupt governor selling prison pardons and a gunman who donned a wig and blackface to throw authorities off the scent.

Investigators in Hamilton County, which encompasses Chattanooga, have been chipping away at the 42-year-old cold case of Samuel Pettyjohn since they renewed their investigation in 2015. No new charges will be filed because all of the major players involved are now dead, but authorities say closing the case provides closure to one aspect of a complicated piece of Tennessee history.

Pettyjohn, a Chattanooga businessman and close friend of Hoffa, was fatally shot in 1979 in downtown Chattanooga after testifying before a federal grand jury during the early phases of Tennessee's notorious “cash-for-clemency” scandal.

“Essentially, Mr. Pettyjohn cooperated with authorities and knew too much about what was going on locally, as well as the state level, and individuals didn’t like that and so individuals hired someone to murder him,” Hamilton County District Attorney Neal Pinkston said. “Here we are some 42 years later.”

The scandal ultimately led to the ousting of Democratic Gov. Ray Blanton, who was never indicted in the investigation — but three of his aides were. However, questions have lingered about the extent to which the governor's administration actively worked to thwart the investigation. Officials say at least five witnesses in the case were murdered or killed themselves.

Pinkston told reporters that Pettyjohn would meet with inmates to indicate that money would help secure an early release from prison starting in 1976. Pettyjohn was joined by William Thompson, who had been involved in Blanton's election campaign and would later be convicted in the cash-for-clemency scandal.

Five Police Officers Fired After 60-Year-Old Man Died by Hanging in Custody

Five police officers in Georgia have been kicked off the force after a 60-year-old man took his own life while in custody, authorities said. The Savannah Police Department confirmed the firings in connection with the April 3 death of William Harvey. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation found that the officers left Harvey in the interview room and came back later to find him unconscious, with neck injuries apparently caused by shoelaces. His death was ruled a suicide. All officers involved were initially placed on administrative leave, and two were subsequently fired following an investigation. Three more were then fired after a second investigation found a message in a group chat between other officers referring to Harvey’s death with an “inappropriate meme/GIF attached,” police said. In a statement, Savannah Mayor Van Johnson said he didn’t believe the officers had malicious intent, but “the result was deadly. And for that, I believe the decision to terminate was appropriate.”

US police shooting of Black man in Georgia echoes Breonna Taylor
Atlanta police burst into the apartment where Johnny Lorenzo Bolton was lying down and shot him, the family lawyer says.

Johnny Lorenzo Bolton was lying with his eyes closed on a couch in his apartment near the US city of Atlanta when police serving a narcotics search warrant burst through the front door with guns drawn and no warning.

Bolton stood up and at least one of the officers fired, sending two bullets into Bolton’s chest. The 49-year-old Black man died of his injuries.

Details of the predawn encounter in December – most of which come from a lawyer representing Bolton’s family – resemble a case that is well known across the United States: the killing nine months earlier of Breonna Taylor in Kentucky. The 26-year-old Black woman also died after being shot by officers serving a drug search warrant at her apartment.

But unlike Taylor’s, Bolton’s name is not painted in large letters on protest signs or mentioned in the ongoing nationwide discussions on racial injustice and police brutality that began after Taylor’s death in March 2020 and that of George Floyd, who died under the knee of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in May 2020.

Bolton’s relatives and their lawyers wanted to try to get information about the shooting from law enforcement before drawing attention to his killing, they said. Frustrated in those efforts, the lawyers sent a draft of a lawsuit to Cobb County officials in mid-April along with a letter threatening litigation if county officials did not provide more information and address accountability and compensation for Bolton’s death.

“For almost six months, we gave them quiet,” Bolton’s sister Daphne Bolton said in a recent interview with The Associated Press news agency. “That lets me know that’s not what gets a response.”

Now, Bolton says, “I want my brother’s name to ring beside Breonna Taylor’s. When they say Breonna Taylor, I want them to say Breonna Taylor and Johnny Lorenzo Bolton. I want them to be simultaneous.”

The specifics of Taylor’s killing have been laid out in detail: police arrived after midnight and used a battering ram to knock open the door. Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, said he grabbed his gun and he and Taylor got out of bed and walked towards the door. Police say they knocked and identified themselves. Walker said he did not hear them say police and feared the officers were intruders. He fired once, hitting an officer in the leg. Three officers returned fire, discharging a total of 32 bullets, five of which hit Taylor.

Far fewer details about Bolton’s death have been released.

In a bare-bones news release issued the day he died, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), which investigates shootings involving police at the request of local agencies, said officers had executed a narcotics search warrant at a Smyrna apartment about 4:40am (08:40 GMT) on December 17.

“During entry into the residence, a SWAT team member discharged his firearm and an occupant of the apartment was struck,” the release said. It was a Cobb County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team. The agency has said it is cooperating with the investigation.

The GBI said it turned over its investigative file to the Cobb County district attorney’s office on March 16. The district attorney’s office has said it is still investigating and – as it does with all cases involving shootings by police – plans to present the case to a grand jury.

In a letter responding to the family’s lawyers, a lawyer representing Cobb County said officials were reviewing the claims raised by the family’s lawyers but they “believe there are several material inaccuracies” in the draft lawsuit and accompanying letter. County officials have declined requests from the AP for documents detailing the shooting, citing an exemption in the state’s open records law for material related to an ongoing investigation.

The two-bedroom apartment where Bolton lived served as an unofficial boarding house, according to Zack Greenamyre, one of the family’s lawyers. A woman and her teenage daughter lived in one bedroom, another woman rented the other bedroom, and Bolton slept on a couch in the living room, Greenamyre said.

As part of an investigation targeting a suspected drug dealer, police served two warrants at roughly the same time: one at a townhouse where the suspected dealer lived and the second at the apartment where Bolton lived, which police said was paid for by the alleged dealer.

The officer who provided sworn statements for both warrant applications said they were based on information from a confidential law enforcement source and surveillance. The officer said the confidential informant bought cocaine at the apartment in September and that drug sales continued there in December.

The officer asked for a “no-knock” warrant, which allows police to enter without announcing themselves. He cited the criminal histories of people who were known to associate with the suspected dealer at the apartment and previous reports of guns seen there.

Greenamyre says the warrant for the apartment was based on false and outdated information and that the apartment was purely residential, with no drug sales taking place there. Bolton’s name does not appear in the paperwork for either warrant.

Greenamyre said witnesses told him Bolton was lying on a couch with his eyes closed, possibly sleeping, when officers crashed through the door. He stood in response to the noise and was shot by police, the witnesses said. They also said that as Bolton lay dying, officers did not immediately provide first aid but instead handcuffed him.

“The limited information available to the family now does not make this look like a justified shooting,” said the letter accompanying the draft lawsuit.

About two weeks after the shooting, police got additional arrest warrants for the alleged dealer, who had already been arrested in the raid on the townhouse, and his brother, saying the pair had access to a locked closet in the apartment where a backpack containing drugs was found.

Police also got arrest warrants for two women and a man who were in the apartment with Bolton when police entered. The warrants charge all three with possession of a gun despite prior felony convictions after one gun was found in the kitchen and another in a bedroom. The man also had a backpack containing cocaine, cannabis and methamphetamines, a warrant says.

I can almost hear his excuse now. Yes I know he said he was laying in the middle of the street. But you know those Black people. They are really hard to see at night.

Man ran over and killed by responding officer's patrol car after calling 911 for help

An Ohio man has died after calling 9-11, only to have a responding police officer run him over with a patrol car, Newsweek reports.

Eric Cole, 42, called police after he was shot by an unknown assailant, telling dispatchers that was laying in the middle of the street and "about to die."

When responding officers arrived, Cole told the dispatcher that "They just hit me." When the dispatcher asked who hit him, he replied, "The police."

"Eric was lying in the street...and the officer did not see him and struck him with their vehicle," Springfield Police Chief Lee Graf said, adding that the officer immediately got out to help before he was transported to a hospital, where he later died.

An autopsy report obtained by WHIO found that Cole suffered blunt-force trauma to his torso, arms, legs and knees as well as receiving a gunshot wound to his left arm. He also had multiple fractured ribs with internal bleeding.

The officer who fatally struck Cole was identified as Amanda Rosales. She has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation. An investigation into how Cole was shot is also underway.

"This was an accident. It doesn't mean it's OK. It was an accident. This was not an intentional act on the part of the officer. I am sure of that," Graf said during the press conference.
