CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — A former Tennessee governor's administration helped fund a contract murder of a key federal witness decades ago while embroiled in the state's largest political scandal, law enforcement officials announced Wednesday.

The new details revealed for the first time Wednesday have elements that ring of a movie: a trusted ally of union boss Jimmy Hoffa gunned down after testifying about a corrupt governor selling prison pardons and a gunman who donned a wig and blackface to throw authorities off the scent.

Investigators in Hamilton County, which encompasses Chattanooga, have been chipping away at the 42-year-old cold case of Samuel Pettyjohn since they renewed their investigation in 2015. No new charges will be filed because all of the major players involved are now dead, but authorities say closing the case provides closure to one aspect of a complicated piece of Tennessee history.

Pettyjohn, a Chattanooga businessman and close friend of Hoffa, was fatally shot in 1979 in downtown Chattanooga after testifying before a federal grand jury during the early phases of Tennessee's notorious “cash-for-clemency” scandal.

“Essentially, Mr. Pettyjohn cooperated with authorities and knew too much about what was going on locally, as well as the state level, and individuals didn’t like that and so individuals hired someone to murder him,” Hamilton County District Attorney Neal Pinkston said. “Here we are some 42 years later.”

The scandal ultimately led to the ousting of Democratic Gov. Ray Blanton, who was never indicted in the investigation — but three of his aides were. However, questions have lingered about the extent to which the governor's administration actively worked to thwart the investigation. Officials say at least five witnesses in the case were murdered or killed themselves.

Pinkston told reporters that Pettyjohn would meet with inmates to indicate that money would help secure an early release from prison starting in 1976. Pettyjohn was joined by William Thompson, who had been involved in Blanton's election campaign and would later be convicted in the cash-for-clemency scandal.

Matt Gaetz-backed Florida GOP candidate accuses Republican rivals of plotting to murder her




A Republican candidate for the United States House of Representatives in Florida has formally accused her political rivals within the party of plotting her assassination.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that GOP candidate Anna Paulina Luna filed a restraining order last week against fellow Republican William Braddock, who is also planning to run for Congress in her district.

"I received information yesterday (at midnight) regarding a plan (with a timeline) to murder me made by William Braddock in an effort to prevent me from winning the election for FL-13," wrote Luna in a petition for injunction, which also claims that Braddock is conspiring with "political opponents" Matt Tito and Amanda Makki to "take her out."

Braddock, however, strongly denied being involved in any plot to murder Luna, who last year lost to incumbent Rep. Charlie Crist (D-FL) by six points.

"This woman is off her rocker and she does not need to be representing anyone," he said.

Braddock also said he wouldn't even bother to prepare for an upcoming court hearing on his purported plot to kill Luna.

"I don't really have any plans to prepare because I didn't do anything wrong," he explained. "It is a false police report and she's probably going to jail for filing a false police report."

Luna won the 2020 GOP nomination for the congressional seat thanks in part to an endorsement from scandal-plagued Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who is currently being investigated by the FBI for potentially taking part in a child sex trafficking scandal.

Scandal-plagued Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) has become so toxic that his former staffers are dropping their links to him from their professional biographies.

At least 25 of the Florida Republican's former congressional staffers do not mention Gaetz's name on their LinkedIn pages, according to an analysis by Insider.

"In a town where people spend all day and all night long bragging about the fact that they work on Capitol Hill, this is really weird," said longtime Democratic Senate aide Jim Manley.


A former GOP congressional aide said Gaetz staffers were wise to drop their links to the lawmaker, who is the subject of a federal sex-trafficking investigation and an ethics probe.

"There is literally no upside to putting Gaetz on your résumé," the former GOP staffer said. "You wouldn't want to say, 'Hey future employer, I worked for a guy who was a potential sex trafficker. It's very savvy to leave that name off."

A Gaetz spokesman complained about the article's premise when contacted for comment.

"The only way the media would know this is if they are trawling through former Capitol staffers' social media pages," said Gaetz spokesman Harlan Hill. "The only reason those staffers want to keep certain information away from their social media pages is because the stalkers in the corporate media keep harassing them in a continued, partisan effort to undermine Rep. Gaetz. This creepy media behavior will be made very public soon. Stay tuned."

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) could be charged as early as next month in a federal sex trafficking probe, according to sources.

The criminal probe has ramped up in recent weeks as investigators have started interviewing more women introduced to the Florida Republican through his friend Joel Greenberg, who pleaded guilty to sex trafficking, stalking, identity theft, wire fraud and conspiracy to bribe a public official, reported ABC News.

Greenberg is prepared to hand over evidence and testimony against Gaetz and others, sources told the network, and prosecutors could decide as soon as July whether to charge the congressman.

The former Seminole County tax collector admitted to sex trafficking a 17-year-old girl, who later went on to work in pornography, and introduced her to other "adult men," and a new round of target letters and subpoenas were sent out last month.

Investigators have recently turned their focus to contracts worth $1.5 million in taxpayer funds that Greenberg gave out through his former elected office, which an independent audit last year found to be unnecessary and wasteful.

Myself and many others are just laughing our asses off over Matt Gaetz and the vast majority of Republicans in Congress screaming their heads off about "critical race theory" and then turning around and voting for Juneteenth which recognizes and supports critical race theory.

Also I think things are building and Gaetz is going to be charged just by the number of leaks we are seeing now. And Fox News probably knows it too.

And we can't miss the gaslighting here where Gaetz is trying to claim the FBI is deep state and corrupt after Trump took it over, appointed the FBI director, fired anyone he didn't like, and the investigation into Gaetz started under Bill Barr.

Rep. Matt Gaetz -- banned from Fox News -- headed straight to Newsmax Thursday night with a conspiracy theory that's unhinged even by his standards, and that of the network.

"The FBI might have had a role in "organizing and participating in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot," Newsmax quoted Gaetz as spewing on air to Steve Cortes and Jenn Pellegrino. "The FBI clearly doesn't have objections to selected releases of video and images from these days, but it begs the question: Why is there not more transparency?

"What did the FBI know? And when did they know it?"

To date, the FBI knows it has arrested "approximately 465 individuals on charges related to the Jan. 6 Capitol breach, including over 130 individuals charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement. The investigation remains ongoing."

Gaetz wrote a letter Wednesday to FBI Director Christopher Wray seeking answers, Newsmax says. He continues to sit on the House Judiciary Committee despite being a known target of an investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ) that it oversees.

Gaetz has apparently decided to go all in against the DOJ and FBI. Here are some excerpts from what he said out loud on the right-wing network:

"The question of whether or not the FBI animated some of the criminal conduct is one that is far more grave…it's reasonable to ask whether or not the FBI is engaged in a playbook where first they infiltrate an organization and then they try to bring that organization to the point of criminal conduct as a mechanism as to try and bring it down.

"The FBI has a long history of this, dating back to even the Civil Rights era, and I certainly hope our premier law enforcement organization is not actually working to violate federal law."

Gaetz offered no evidence to support his tirade, but the Newsmax mikes remained open:

"Gaetz said he fears a political weaponization of the FBI and the Justice Department, adding it is "an agency that has a whole lot of swamp left in it and needs to be drained."

"I do not think we are dealing with a small group of bad apples. I think that the FBI has morphed into a political opposition research organization and a political activism organization more than a law enforcement organization.

"Law enforcement is done best at the state and local level, not with a bunch of folks in Washington, D.C., who are addicted to the coverage that they receive from The New York Times, The Washington Post, and CNN.

"Gaetz said he has a pretty strong gut and his feeling is the FBI infiltrated the Jan. 6 protesters that stormed the Capitol, and he wants answers about it."
