Fox News host Tucker Carlson tore into Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Tex., on Wednesday for calling the Capitol riot a "violent terrorist attack," accusing the Texas Republican of "repeating the talking points that [Attorney General] Merrick Garland has written for him."

Carlson's comments came in response to comments made by Cruz during a Wednesday Senate Rules committee hearing, where the senator remarked upon the "solemn" anniversary of the Capitol riot.

"We are approaching a solemn anniversary this week," Cruz said. "And it is an anniversary of a violent terrorist attack on the Capitol, where we saw the men and women of law enforcement demonstrate incredible courage, incredible bravery, risk their lives for the Capitol."

Carlson, who has repeatedly downplayed the insurrection, did not take well to Cruz's off-brand remarks.

"Now let's be honest," Carlson said during a Wednesday broadcast. "Everyone who's conservative appreciates Ted Cruz. You may not like him. But you've gotta appreciate him. He's legitimately smart. He's one of the more articulate people to serve in the Congress, maybe the most articulate."

After sufficient flattery, the Fox News firebrand then proceeded to lambast Cruz's word choice when describing the Capitol riot.

"He described January 6th as a violent terrorist attack," Carlson said. "Of all the things January 6th was, it was definitely not a violent terrorist attack. It wasn't an insurrection. Was it a riot? Sure. It was not a violent terrorist attack. Sorry! So why are you telling us it was, Ted Cruz?"

"What the hell's going on here?" he added. "You're making us think, maybe the Republican Party is as worthless as we suspected it was. That can't be true. Reassure us, please, Ted Cruz."

Both the FBI and the Congressional Research Service have classified the Capitol insurrection as an act of domestic terrorism.

Although Cruz is a member of the "Sedition Caucus" – a group of eight Republican senators who voted to reject the Electoral College vote count for Arizona and Pennsylvania – his comments nevertheless drew widespread scorn from conservatives who were quick to point out his apparent lack of fealty to the party.



"Ted Cruz followed Lindsey Graham and showed his true colors today," wrote right-wing journalist John Cardillo.

"The minute you call it a 'violent terrorist attack on the capitol,' you lose most of your standing when complaining about the DOJ, Dems and Media because they have diff views than you how to handle a 'violent terrorist attack on the capitol," tweeted Yossi Gestetner, co-founder of the Orthodox Jewish Public Affairs Council."

Donald Trump aide Sebastian Gorka also chimed in, remarking on Trump's sudden cancellation of a press conference set for the anniversary of the Capitol riot. "I'm so done with Ted Cruz. What are the odds he's the Senator who told President Trump not to speak tomorrow?"

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) groveled before Fox News host Tucker Carlson on Thursday when asked about describing the January 6th Capitol riots as a terrorist attack.

Carlson started off by accusing Cruz of deliberately "lying" to smear the MAGA rioters as terrorists.

"You called this a terror attack, when by no definition was this a terror attack," he said. "That’s a lie. You told that lie on purpose. I’m wondering why you did."

Cruz replied apologetically.

"The way I phrased things yesterday, it was sloppy and it was, frankly, dumb," he said.

"I don't buy that!" Carlson interjected. "I've known you a long time since before you went to the Senate! You were a Supreme Court contender! You take words as seriously as any man who's served in the Senate! And you repeated that phrase -- I do not believe you used it accidentally."

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Thursday appeared on Tucker Carlson's show an issued a groveling apology for describing the rioters who stormed the United States Capitol as "terrorists" earlier in the week.

"The way I phrased things yesterday, it was sloppy and it was, frankly, dumb," said Cruz, who came under heavy criticism from Carlson for purportedly smearing Trump supporters with the phrase.

Former Republican strategist Steve Schmidt was quick to pounce on Cruz's performance, which he called just the latest in a long string of embarrassments for the one-time presidential contender.



"Ted Cruz groveling for favor between twitches as he absorbs the emasculating lecture from 2024 contender Tucker Carlson is a depraved spectacle that affirms the old proverbs about cowards tasting a thousand deaths," Schmidt writes on Twitter. "'When a coward sees a man he can beat he becomes hungry for a fight' is an old African proverb. Perhaps if Ted knew it he wouldn’t have so misjudged Tucker. Emasculation and humiliation seem to lurk like Nag and Nagina around Ted’s ambition."

I write this as someone who's been strongly conservative her whole life. And as much as I hate to give the loons on the left any satisfaction, I am compelled to say this:

Yesterday, Ted Cruz called what happened at the Capitol on January 6th, 2021 a “violent terrorist attack.” He then attempted to do damage control on Tucker Carlson Tonight and it didn't go well. Later, Cruz posted the video of his appearance on Carlson’s show on his Twitter feed.

Sorry, Mr. Cruz. Going on Carlson wasn't not good enough. You blew it. Big time. What happened last year wasn't a terrorist attack, it was a riot that got out of control.

I voted for you in the 2016 primary because I thought you had the character, principles and intelligence to lead our country. But now, you sound waaaay too much like the Trump-hating zealots Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger. Socialists of all stripes are trying to take over this country – there’s no room for weakness anymore from the Republican Party. But you showed the world yesterday the exact impotence and poor judgment that those who wish to destroy our country will continue using against us.

Mr. Cruz, no real conservative is going to vote for you anymore, and the establishment will never love you. We’ll simply not tolerate spineless cowards any longer. Your political career is over, so why betray America now? What do they have on you?

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) was likened on CNN Friday to a Game of Thrones character who took to calling himself "Reek" after having his penis amputated during extensive torture.

CNN's Brianna Keilar reported on Cruz groveling before Fox News personality Tucker Carlson after describing Jan. 6 as a terrorist attack.

"Straightforward, nothing crazy about that comment, Ted Cruz just saying what is," Keilar noted.

But Cruz apologized to the Fox personality on-air.


Keilar discussed the series of events with co-host John Berman.

"Can I just say one more thing about Ted Cruz there," Berman said. "It's like 7:28 a.m. — Ted Cruz, do you know where your spine is?"

"I thought he handled it better in 'Game of Thrones' when he was Theon Grayjoy to Ramsey Bolton, there," he continued. "Honestly, that was like Reek, it was like the same as watching Reek in 'Game of Thrones' there, how he was addressing him. The power structure there."

"Did you just call him Reek?" Keilar said. "That is such an apt metaphor."

"Well, if the shoe fits or the codpiece fits," Berman replied..

"I don't know. I think that, you know, Tucker Carlson will be picking his teeth this morning with Ted Cruz's spine, is sort of what I think," Keilar said.
