GOP scrambles to figure out what Trump legal drama means for future

Senate Republicans are scrambling to figure out how former President Trump’s mounting legal troubles will affect his grip on the party and chances of running for office again in 2024.

Allies of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who has worked behind the scenes to counter Trump, are wondering whether the former president’s clout may fade regardless of what happens in the 2022 midterm elections because of his many legal entanglements, including investigations by New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) and Fulton County, Ga., District Attorney Fani Willis (D).

The latest development came Monday evening when Trump’s longtime accounting firm, Mazars USA, severed ties with him and his business empire and said it could no longer vouch for the reliability of a decade’s worth of financial statements it prepared for the Trump Organization.

The revelation came after James said her investigation found evidence that Trump’s company used “fraudulent or misleading” valuations of properties to obtain loans and tax deductions.

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), one of seven Senate Republicans who voted to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial, called the statement by Trump’s accounting firm “very unusual.”

“I’ve never seen that happen to an ongoing entity. They did also in their statement say that they didn’t see anything of a substantial nature ... that suggested there had been misreporting, but it will obviously create a great deal of anxiety inside the organization and an effort to find what that problem was,” he added.

Romney said he couldn’t know exactly why Mazars decided to cut its ties with the Trump Organization.

“I presume they believe they’re avoiding some liability of their own for reports they put out that they may feel were inaccurate,” he said.

Asked about the ongoing investigations into Trump’s business dealings, one senior Senate Republican told The Hill that “obviously they could” affect his decision to run for the White House in 2024 or his viability as a candidate.

“What the Southern District of New York decides to do, document discovery, all those could make a difference,” the senator added, requesting anonymity to comment on a sensitive topic.

CNN reported in August that federal prosecutors in Manhattan suspected that longtime Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg committed perjury during an investigation of former Trump fixer Michael Cohen. That could become relevant now that Manhattan’s district attorney has charged the Trump Organization with an alleged 15-year tax fraud scheme.

Weisselberg and attorneys for the Trump Organization have pleaded not guilty, and a trial is expected to start later this year.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D) is conducting a criminal fraud investigation of the Trump Organization that James is participating in.

The New York attorney general’s office, headed by James, is also conducting a civil investigation of Trump’s business dealings.

At the center of those investigations is the question of whether Trump committed fraud by overstating the value of his assets to obtain loans.

Senate Republican Whip John Thune (S.D.) and other GOP lawmakers are trying to figure what it all means politically, given that Trump is viewed as the party’s de facto leader.

“I suppose it probably depends on how this all plays out,” he said. “I assume there are other accounting firms out there that they can employ, but clearly they’ll have to answer the questions around it.”

“All I know is what has been reported,” he added. “Those are questions that his organization, they’re going to have to respond to and have to answer, I assume.

“Their financial records have been under attack for a long time, been looked at for a long time,” he noted. “At this point I think it’s all part of a broader narrative, and we’ll see where it leads.”

One key question is whether Trump misled his own accountants.

A new letter from Mazars instructing the Trump Organization to explain that statements of financial condition made from 2011 to 2020 are no longer reliable raises questions about whether they contain significant inaccuracies.

The Trump Organization released a statement emphasizing that Mazars’s “work was performed in accordance with all applicable accounting standards and principles and that such statements of financial condition do not contain any material discrepancies.”

Mazars provided its instruction regarding the reliability of past financial statements and announced its decision to separate from the Trump Organization in a Feb. 9 letter that was included in new court documents filed by James’s office.

The Trump Organization has pushed back against James’s investigation, calling it “baseless.”

Mazars’s decision to distance itself from the Trump Organization raises speculation among Senate Republicans that there may be more shoes to drop in Trump’s legal battles.

Romney said the decision by Trump’s longtime accounting firm to distance itself from the former president “could mean a lot of things, some not so bad, other that would be more troubling.”

“Time will tell. There’ll be, I’m sure, effort to look underneath a lot of rocks,” he said.

“Although I can say that there have been predictions for I don’t know how many years now that, ‘Oh my goodness, the shoe is going to drop, the Trump Organization and the former president are in big trouble.’ Nothing’s happened so far and so I’m not holding my breath in that regard one way or the other,” he added. “To quote the president, ‘It is what it is,’ so we’ll see what finally develops.”

Trumpworld in full meltdown following breakup with Mazars: report

    Brandon Gage, Alternet
    February 17, 2022

    www.youtube.com
February has not been a fun month for former President Donald Trump and his embattled Trump Organization, and according to a new report in The Daily Beast, the news that Trump’s longtime accounting firm, Mazars USA, fired him as a client has triggered a full-blown meltdown throughout the meretricious mazes of Trumpworld.

Mazars can “no longer stand behind a decade of annual financial statements it prepared for the Trump Organization, court documents show,” The New York Times revealed on Monday.

Mazars’ legally loud move is the latest tendril extending from the palette of civil and criminal investigations into Trump’s personal business practices by New York Attorney General Letitia James and New York City District Attorney Alvin Bragg, both of whom are amassing breadcrumbs suggesting that Trump and his associates engaged in schemes to defraud lending institutions and evade taxes.

Trump insiders told the Beast that they have advised Trump and his three eldest offspring – each of whom has been intimately involved in running the family business – that having your financial handlers jump ship is bad news.

“I’ll be honest with you: I have said for years that this whole thing is one big fishing expedition,” one individual told the Beast. “I’ve expected it to just fizzle at some point, or to turn up ticky tacky shit that can score prosecutors big headlines. The Mazars news was the first time I started thinking, ‘Hey, this might be serious.’ Could Donald Trump [and his business] be screwed? I don’t know, but I’m not as confident as I once was in saying, ‘No.’”

That person’s concern for Trump’s wellbeing was not unique.

“None of these sources who spoke to Trump believed he was taking this as seriously as he should. Two of them said the former president told them that his business empire has been doing ‘great,’ no matter what prosecutors are trying to do to it,” the Beast noted.

Appearances, above all else, are what matter most to Trump.

“We have a great company with fantastic assets that are unique, extremely valuable and, in many cases, far more valuable than what was listed in our Financial Statements,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

Nevertheless, the Beast continued, “all three predicted that this latest Mazars development would likely strengthen Trump’s resolve to run again for the presidency in 2024.”

This is undoubtedly due to the – albeit controversial – legal armor that the presidency provides.

For now, the peril that Trump faces is very real, Miami-based bankruptcy attorney Steven J. Solomon explained to the Beast.

    “It’s incredibly significant.
And frankly, I’ve never heard of a situation where an accounting firm is going back retroactively 10 years. This would be a trigger point. If your lender doesn’t have confidence in you because it can’t rely on the information, you can’t be friends anymore,” he said, adding later that “this is going to be incredibly troubling and at the same time. You’re going to have bank regulators looking… at these loans and determining that there are these questions being raised about the solvency of the borrower.”

Solomon said that Mazars leaving the Trump Organization in the dust will likely spook future firms away from doing business with the Trumps. This, in turn, may force Trump to explore other, less respectable avenues of obtaining credit.

“This explodes the national security risk by a factor of 10, because now he's going to be desperate for new loans. Legitimate banks are not going to touch him. So it expands the universe of shady characters who could offer him loans in return for favors that might include disclosing U.S. national security secrets,” said Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft fellow Joseph Cirincione.

“Whether it is the Saudis, Russians, narcoterrorists – anybody with access to hundreds of millions would be in the running for Donald Trump’s new loan officer,” he said. “That is why you don’t give security clearance to people who are financially compromised.”

But the end game may already be in play.

Barbara Res, who designed and built Trump Tower, believes that the key to nailing Trump is to convince ex-Trump Organization Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg – who was indicted last year for tax fraud to turn on his former boss.

“Weisselberg is who’s in trouble now. He's probably the one that gave all the information to the accountants. They didn’t get it out of thin air.
They worked with Weisselberg, He’s the guy. They didn’t check [real estate values] themselves. They’re not real estate people,” Res said. “I hope that they flip Weisselberg, because this is a big deal with him. He’s the one who’d go to jail for this, I would think.”

Res also told the Beast that during her tenure at the Trump Organization, “people didn’t let” Trump cook the books. “We controlled him. But he reached the point where [he] no longer had anyone who’d say no to him.”

Res added that given everything that has come to light about Trump, “if he gets away from this, there’s no God, and no reason to live.”

Hey traitor Bill Barr shut the fuck up. Traitor Trump is the most hopeful thing we progressive/liberal/Democrats have.

'He's lost his grip': Bill Barr urges Republicans to dump Trump

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, former Attorney General Bill Barr spends a great deal of time in his new book trashing Donald Trump and urging the Republican Party to look elsewhere for a new leader.

Along the way, Barr suggested that there is something wrong with the former president that should preclude him from ever holding office again.

In Barr's forthcoming book, “One Damn Thing After Another,” he describes his battles with the former president and dismissed all of Trump's claims of election fraud, writing, "The election was not ‘stolen.' Trump lost it.”

According to the Journal, Barr claims Trump "Lost his grip" after the 2020 election results showed he had been defeated, with the former AG charging, "The absurd lengths to which he took his ‘stolen election’ claim led to the rioting on Capitol Hill.”

Barr added the former president “shown he has neither the temperament nor persuasive powers to provide the kind of positive leadership that is needed,”

The former attorney general added that Trump might have pulled off a 2020 win if he had “just exercised a modicum of self-restraint, moderating even a little of his pettiness.”

As for what Republicans should do going forward, Barr suggested they put Trump in their rearview mirror, writing the GOP has "an impressive array of younger candidates” who share Mr. Trump’s agenda but not his “erratic personal behavior," the Journal reported.

Chris Christie levels Trump for calling Putin a 'genius' for disastrous Ukraine invasion

Estranged Trump ally Chris Christie on Monday slammed the former president for declaring that Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine was a stroke of "genius" when by all accounts it has so far been a disaster for Russia.

"How can anyone with any understanding of the world call Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine 'genius' and 'very savvy' as we watch him unite the rest of the world against Russia in nearly an instant?" Christie asked on Twitter.

The former New Jersey governor then outlined how Putin had gotten himself into a geopolitical mess from which there would likely be no recovery.

"Putin has two choices now: an unwinnable occupation of Ukraine after leveling the country and murdering its hero President (if that is even achievable) or a humiliating retreat," Christie wrote. "Yeah, that’s 'genius' and 'very savvy' alright. No walking that back. History is watching."

Trump has continued to heap praise on Putin for his Ukraine invasion even as it has been condemned by the vast majority of Republican lawmakers.

Despite this, virtually no Republicans other than Christie and Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) have been willing to publicly call Trump out on it.

Bill Barr tells CNN he'll get involved in GOP primary to prevent Trump from winning nomination

Former Attorney General Bill Barr has said in the past that he would still vote for Donald Trump if he's the GOP's nominee in 2024 -- but he also told CNN's Jake Tapper on Friday that he will get involved in the Republican primary to derail his attempt at the nomination.

During a lengthy interview, Tapper pointed to Barr's conclusion in his recently released book, "One Damn Thing After Another," that the GOP would be best served by moving on from Trump in 2024.

"If Trump runs, would you get involved in the primary fight to defeat him?" Tapper asked him.

    "Absolutely," Barr said without hesitation.

"To support one of the other candidates?" asked Tapper.

"Yes," Barr said. "I think the coming presidential election would be a good opportunity for the Republican Party. From my standpoint, the progressive left... is sort of showing sort of a totalitarian temperament and I think the republicans can win a decisive majority. But I don't think we can do it with Trump. He's just too divisive a candidate."

Barr would not specify which Republican candidates he would get behind, although he told Tapper that he didn't believe Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) had any shot at actually getting the nomination.

Trump fears he's 'enraged suburban women' again -- and it will hurt him in 2024: report

Former President Donald Trump is reportedly nervous that his own Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade will significantly hurt his chances to win the 2024 election.

Rolling Stone reports that Trump fears that the ruling has "engaged suburban women" who were instrumental in Democrats' electoral victories in 2018 and 2020.

Because of this, Trump has maintained a "calculated silence" over the issue, which he fears will be used by Democrats as a cudgel against him.

The former president is also worried that some of the conservative movement's most fanatical anti-abortion activists could be a turn-off to moderate voters in the coming years.

READ MORE: Newly revealed emails show Ginni Thomas pressuring Arizona legislators to overturn Trump's loss

"In recent days, Trump has told some of his allies and counselors that “suburban women” and other key voting groups don’t like hearing about the issue, as they are simply more pro-choice than the mainstream of the Republican Party and conservative movement," the publication writes. "He has also told several associates that if he went too hard now on the topic of overturning Roe, it would give his enemies the chance to 'use it against' him."

That said, it is unlikely that Trump will be able to escape blame on the issue, as he picked three of the five Supreme Court justices who are likely to overturn the landmark 1973 ruling in the coming weeks.
