Republicans unfortunately own a big edge in the perception game. The perception of being the "party" of fiscal conservatism and smaller government. Has done very well for the Republicans. However it's when the Republicans start playing at "culture war" that gets them in trouble. Culture was is dog whistle politics for keep America white. Trump was responsible for white supremacists groups to take heart. Likewise a DeSantis presidency will further embolden the far right.

How quickly some forget, that a sitting repuke president openly called on a alt-right group during a presidential debate.

"Proud Boys, stand back and stand by." - President Trump

Shortly after Trump took office I started point out the ways he was violating "conservative values" with what was at the time conservative/Republican's full support. And by the time Trump had his first two years in there was not a single "conservative value" Trump had not shit on wiped his ass with and threw away with the continued full support of "conservative/Republicans." In fact I started asking the "conservative/Republicans" on the board to just name a "conservative value" and they would not do it because they knew I would give examples of Trump violating that value with their full support.

I had been at personal war against the lie of conservatism as it is preached and practiced in this nation for more than 40 years because they would preach their alleged values but actually practice the opposite. But even I never dreamed they would throw away every value they ever claimed to have for just one man is such glaring and obvious ways. Trump just stripped them naked.

And that was bad enough but then I sat there horrified as I watched what used to be "conservative/Republicans" turn into treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans willingly and gladly follow Trump all the way to treason against the United States of America. Even I never thought they would go that far and reject the Constitution of the United States of America, the rule of law, democracy itself, and every other great thing the United States of America has ever stood for. And continue their treason even now.

That is something that cannot be overlooked, forgotten or forgiven. We who do love our country must actively fight against that.

That is Republican boiler plate. Typically it does not fit the economic history of the United States. From the end of the Second World War to the inflationary recession of 1974 most Americans got pay raises every year that beat inflation.

During this time the top tax rate never got below 70%. It was often as high as 91%.

    http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-soi/02inpetr.pdf

Those were good years for most Americans. Successful Republican efforts to scale back the reforms of the New Deal changed that.

    1. shootersa
So what was the effective tax rate from say 1900 to 2020?

Now, can you tell us specifically whick deplorable policy changes prevented those pay raises that made so many Americans happy?

Republicans' fail at "culture war" politics. Remember the "moral majority" and the "christian right"Do you recall the "Tea party" movement. It made progress when it concentrated on balancing the budget and holding politicians to their campaign promises. But as usual once the movement began focusing on "social issues." Well that was it for the Tea party.

Now the repuke issue is on "woke" Well here we go again!

The support of the religious right was essential in electing Ronald Reagan in 1980. The support of the religious right was essential in electing Donald Trump in 2016. Because Trump carried out a long delayed Republican promise to overturn Roe vs Wade, most Christian conservatives will continue to vote Republican. This will win it for the GOP in closely matched elections.

silkythighs, just because you think Christian conservatives are a bunch of ignorant rubes does not mean that their opinions and political behavior do not matter.

Dog makes a good point. One that Hillary learned the hard way. Us truck driving, beer drinking, gun toting, trailer dwelling, uneducated, unwashed, genetically ambiguous deplorables have a voice, and we make it heard. Deplorables would do well to keep that in mind as they spew their insults and derision like arrogant royalty out among the minions.

President Biden organized a united response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

As far as domestic policy is concerned, he can't work miracles. Historical advantages have stopped working for the United States. From the end of the Second World War to the inflationary recession of 1974 most Americans enjoyed increases in their standards of living nearly every year. That is not coming back. There is nothing politicians can do to restore it.

To a considerable extent the U.S. economy never really recovered from the recession of 1974. There are greater rewards at the top, but there are fewer of them. The U.S. economy has become less forgiving of bad luck, unfortunate decisions, and failure.

Well I appreciate you responding for silkthighs...

However, Biden had nothing to do with the organization of Ukraine. It was the Europeans that did that & when Biden got involved he fumbled all over it.

As far as the US economy Regan & Trump are the only 2 that has put money back in the Americans pockets. In both of their terms, I made a lot of money! Enough to retire at age 54. I understand how some people did not take advantage of the opportunities that was given but then again only 10% of the people are financially intelligent.

I do appreciate that you recognize that Biden has done nothing for us.

Reagan and Trump cut taxes without cutting expenses. The military budget nearly doubled under Reagan. Republicans used to value balanced budgets. What happened to that?

I remember the Tea Party very well. The Tea Party was invented and funded by the Koch brothers and promoted by Fox News and the right wing false propaganda noise machine. It was all very carefully crafted to appears to be a grass roots movement when in reality it was a concerted effort to oppose President Obama and his agenda. And it was also an incredible mistake that opened Pandora's box and created a monster they could not control.

Charles Koch says he regrets fueling partisanship: 'Boy, did we screw up!'

    https://www.businessinsider.com/charles-koch-partisanship-mistake-boy-did-we-screw-up-wsj-2020-11

I can't speak for silkythighs but as far as I am concerned this is an utterly false statement. First I don't hate anyone. But more importantly not all Republicans are treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans. There are a few shining examples of conservative/Republicans that did stand up for their oath to protect and defend the Constitution. But unfortunate for our country the majority of the Republican party are treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans that kick any other Republicans that do dare to stand up for the Constitution and rule of law and tell the truth out of the party. Which you cannot possibly deny because there are just too many recent examples.

And again not answering for silkythighs but just off the top of my head the first thing President Biden did was pull the United States of America back from being a third world banana republic shit hole country run by a mad king tin horn dictator that corrupted the entire federal government for his own political gain covering up his crimes and using the power of the government to after his political enemies. While at the same time turning the US into a laughingstock on the world stage. Which again is where conservative/Republicans turn into treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans because Trump was the most mentally ill, stupid and ignorant, incompetent, deadly and treasonous president ever elected and they protected him, covered up for him, lied to for him, and gladly followed him all the way to treason against the United States of America. And President Biden has pulled us back from that, honored and obeyed the Constitution and the rule of law, as well as restoring the norms and institutions that have always been our greatness.

And then I don't remember a president that has done more for me personally just by helping end the COVID crisis and restoring our economy. As well as lowering my healthcare and drug costs; fighting climate change reducing energy costs; investing in mental health care; and investing in American manufacturing and infrastructure.

Not to mention uniting NATO and most the world to fight against Putin/Russia.

Now would you like to debate this using standard debate rules @sirius1902? I would be happy to do that. Just say so right here and I will even start a new thread for it.

If the democrats stop defunding the military we wouldn't have to keep providing them with the equipment to do their jobs and provide us the protection we need for our country & to remain a superpower. In addition, you will recall he had taken over the worst economy at the time, he united Germany & stopped the cold war! These things take money.

If ALL of our newly elected presidents stop throwing away all the previous policies that works and expanded on them, we could save a ton of money. But every 4 or 8 years we have recreate the world and that is costing us tons to the bottom line. It really is ridiculous!

Well, but don't forget, according to despicables, Biden
    *looks at post

    end the COVID crisis
    restoring our economy
lowering my healthcare and drug costs
fighting climate change reducing energy costs
    investing in mental health care
and investing in American manufacturing and infrastructure.

We should maybe talk about some intervention, or maybe seriously consider opening the safe space again.

We should debate this don't you think? Because its not the Democrats trying to cut defense spending.

Eyeing defense spending cuts, House GOP targets military ‘wokeness’
    https://thehill.com/policy/defense/...ing-cuts-house-gop-targets-military-wokeness/

Two tings here. First it was Trump's goal and mission to throw out and/or repeal everything President Obama did whether it was good for the country or not simply because it had Obama's name on it. Which among a vast array of other things is why right now Iran is reported to be within 12 days of having enough enriched uranium to build a nuclear bomb when the Iran nuclear deal was holding them in check.

And second President Biden had no choice but to reverse some Trump policies because they were dangerous destructive and poisoning the environment. But unlike Trump he didn't just reverse everything that had Trump's name on it and left a lot of Trump's policies and executive orders in place.

Will you give President Biden credit for that?

No I don't need to have another stupid thread by you! For the record I don't care to have any more conversations with you, so go ahead and have your final response, then leave me out of your dumb ass responses.

If you have confidence in what you are saying why are you afraid to debate? Wouldn't you love to prove me wrong and put me in my place.

For instance I would say President Biden is not only taking a harder line against China then any other president he is also charging full steam ahead trying to bring our manufacturing back and ending our dependence on China for rare earths and electronics.

Wouldn't it be great to prove me wrong on that in front of the whole forum?

If it was necessary in 1980 to raise military spending, it was necessary to raise taxes to pay for it. That is what did happen when the United States entered World War II. It was not necessary because the United States was at peace.

By a number of important criteria the economy under Carter was better than the economy under Reagan.

Under Carter an average of 2,600,000 jobs were created every year. Under Reagan that declined to 2,000,000 jobs created every year.

    https://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=103x416274

Under Carter there was a six month recession. Unemployment reached 7.8%. Under Reagan there was a sixteen month recession. Unemployment reached 10.8%.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_recessions_in_the_United_States

Under Carter the national debt increased by $209 billion. Nevertheless the national debt as a percentage of gross domestic product declined by 2%.

Under Carter the national debt increased by $280 billion. Nevertheless, the national debt as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) declined by 1%.

Under Reagan the national debt increased by $1,775 billion. The national debt as a percentage of (GDP) increased by 18%.

    https://www.thebalance.com/national-debt-by-year-compared-to-gdp-and-major-events-3306287

The inflation that grew after the Iranian Revolution of 1979, and which declined after 1982, happened because of fluctuations in the world price of petroleum under which neither president had much control.

As usual this thread is getting derailed with a bunch of off topic bullshit and false attacks on President Biden that no one is willing to back up when it should be about DeSantis. He was supposed to be the treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republican hope to replace Trump. And I don't know about any of them but I was shocked then DeSantis suddenly crashed in the polls and Trump surged. And I am not even sure why. Trump has made a few limp dick attacks but no big bombshells. And Trump hasn't even implemented his greatt 5 point attack plan yet.

Trump has a 5-point attack plan designed to annihilate DeSantis as a presidential candidate: report

    Alex Henderson, AlterNet
    March 03, 2023

Among political pundits, there has been a great deal of debate on how well Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will perform against former President Donald Trump in the 2024 GOP presidential primary — that is, assuming that DeSantis decides to run.

"Real Time" host Bill Maher both view Trump as the likely nominee; right-wing firebrand author Ann Coulter, on the other hand, is a former Trump supporter turned scathing Trump critic who is very bullish on DeSantis and believes that Trump is "done" and "over" in the Republican Party.

Wilson, in an interview with The Guardian, predicted that Trump will crush DeSantis in the primary when the reelected Florida governor feels the full weight of Trump's cruelty and viciousness. Trump has recently stepped up his attacks on DeSantis, and a report published by Axios on March 3 describes the ex-president's anti-DeSantis game plan.

According to Axios reporters Mike Allen and Josh Kraushaar, Trump "is convinced his attacks on Ron DeSantis are chipping away at the Florida governor's support and confidence, sources and friends familiar with Trump's thinking say." And Trump "hopes to scare DeSantis out of running, or at least damage him if he follows through on signs he will enter the race."

Trump, Allen and Kraushaar report, hopes to bring down DeSantis as a possible presidential candidate by "branding him" in "five areas," which are: (1) "DeSantis' past support for changes to Social Security and Medicare," (2) DeSantis' "disloyalty to Trump after he helped DeSantis get elected governor in 2018," (3) "cast DeSantis as a lackey of former House Speaker Paul Ryan," (4) "DeSantis' response to COVID," and (5) "portray DeSantis as wishy-washy on the war" in Ukraine.

Trump plays hardball, but how effective the five-point line of attack that Axios describes will be against DeSantis remains to be seen.

An anonymously-quoted source described by Allen and Kraushaar as a "Trump confidant" told Axios, "There's a pre-Trump Ron, and there's a post-Trump Ron. He used to be a Reagan Republican. That's where he comes from. He's now awkwardly trying to square his views up with the populist nationalist feeling of that party."
