In Europe, the western allies began linking up across the Rhine river in Germany. US Third Army captured Ludwigshafen and Speyer, Germany while US 9th Army began the sealing off of the Ruhr region. B-17 bombers, escorted by P-51 Mustang fighters, bomb the Daimler tank plant in Berlin while successfully defending off ME-262 jet fighters in opposition.

In the Pacific, battleships USS Missouri and USS Wisconsin shelled Okinawa. The damaged carrier USS Franklin arrived at Ulithi Atoll for emergency repairs.

In Europe, US Third Army pushed forward across the Rhine and connected with US Seventh Army. Engineering details continued to build bridges enabling more troop crossings into Germany. US Third Army commander General George Patton makes a controversial maneuver to rescue his son-in-law from officer POW camp Stalag XIII which ends in failure.

In the Pacific, the US Navy continues its assault on Okinawa with losses to its capital ships from enemy action as a consequence.
