Coco Gauff ‘can’t really get upset’ at climate protesters who caused 45-minute delay in her US Open semifinal
Jacob Lev and George Ramsay, CNN
Fri, September 8, 2023 at 6:12 AM MDT·3 min read

Coco Gauff said she couldn’t “really get upset” with the climate protestors who caused a 45-minute delay in the middle of her US Open semifinal against Karolína Muchová on Thursday.

Gauff, who went on to win the match 6-4 7-5 and reach her second grand slam final, was leading at the start of the second set when the disruption took place.

In a statement, the US Open called it a “fan-related” incident on Arthur Ashe Stadium and said one attendee “affixed himself to the floor and due to the nature of this action, medical professionals, NYPD and security personnel were needed in order to resolve the issue and remove the fan from the stands.”

As the attendee – who was shouting about “environmental issues,” according to the ESPN broadcast – was removed, fans inside the stadium cheered.

Four protesters were involved, and three of them “were escorted out of the stadium without further incident,” according to a statement from the US Tennis Association.

“Throughout history, moments like this are definitely defining moments,” Gauff later told reporters. “I believe in climate change. I don’t really know exactly what they were protesting. I know it was about the environment. I 100% believe in that.

“I think there are things we can do better. I know the tournaments are doing things to do better for the environment. Would I prefer it not happening in my match? 100%, yeah. I’m not gonna sit here and lie. But it is what it is.”

Gauff and Muchová both left the court during the delay as the protestors were escorted out of the stadium.

Climate protestors also disrupted last year’s French Open and matches earlier this year at Wimbledon, where they sprinkled orange confetti and jigsaw puzzle pieces on the grass playing surface.

“I had a feeling it was going to happen this tournament,” said Gauff. “It happened in the French Open, it happened in Wimbledon. So, you know, following the trend, it was definitely going to happen here.

She added: “I wasn’t pissed at the protesters. I know the stadium was because it just interrupted entertainment. I always speak about preaching what you feel and what you believe in. It was done in a peaceful way, so I can’t get too mad at it.

“Obviously, I don’t want it to happen when I’m winning up 6-4 1-0 and I wanted the momentum to keep going. But hey, if that’s what they felt they needed to do to get their voices heard, I can’t really get upset at it.”

Gauff, the youngest woman to reach the US Open final since Serena Williams in 1999, will next face Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka as she bids to win her first grand slam title.

CNN’s Jenny Stevens contributed to this report.

No doubt tennis should be banned world wide! It is obviously the main cause of man made climate change. I think we can all pretty much agree on that.

It should be banned from the professional level all the way down to amateur and recreation. The time to act is now!!!

If it were a "hoax" - it would be a case of thousands and thousands of people with scientific backgrounds working together to make shit up.

Who has a history of doing that?

    Anti-vaxxers
    Gun lobby
    Politicians
    Capitalists
    Republicans

At best, their science is RIGHT, but given the complexity involved, things haven't gotten as bad as the earlier scientists were first predicting, hence us not already being dead. Instead, we're alive... but meanwhile temperatures are still RISING! Australia's just had its hottest winter since 1910. Island states are flooding. Antarctica did not recover its sheet ice this winter.

It's a case of - if the science is right, and we do nothing, we die. If the science is wrong, and we do something, we live. And by we I mean our kids/grandkids. We'll live... just hotter n hotter. They'll die, with temperatures rising and destroying farmlands, causing massive famine.

But hey, we all know that Republicans don't give a fuck about kids' lives... There's no profit in it for them.

Oh why am I not surprised???

California scientist says he ‘left out the full truth’ to get climate change wildfire study published
Patrick Brown said he "narrowly focused" his study because of the pressure scientists face to be published in prestigious articles

A California scientist admitted that he "left out the full truth" about climate change, blaming it primarily on human causes, to get his study published in a prestigious science journal.

Patrick T. Brown, a lecturer at Johns Hopkins University and doctor of earth and climate sciences, admitted in an online article in The Free Press, a blog post and a series of social media postswant climate papers that support certain preapproved narratives—even when those narratives come at the expense of broader knowledge for society," Brown wrote in The Free Press.

Brown's study published in Nature on Aug. 30 stated that climate change affected extreme wildfire behavior like the devastating fires in California and Maui. The established scientist now admits that he "focused narrowly" only on the human influence of wildfires, instead of focusing broadly on the complexities of other "obviously relevant factors."

He blamed his angle on the pressure scientists face to get their studies published in prestigious articles and the need to create catchy abstracts that can be turned into headlines.

Brown said in The Free Press he is not "disowning" his paper by criticizing how he chose to approach the piece, but admitting it is less "useful than it could have been."

"You might be wondering at this point if I’m disowning my own paper. I’m not," Brown wrote. "On the contrary, I think it advances our understanding of climate change’s role in day-to-day wildfire behavior. It’s just that the process of customizing the research for an eminent journal caused it to be less useful than it could have been."

    https://twitter.com/PatrickTBrown31...truth-climate-change-wildfire-study-published

Brown wrote that the study didn’t look at poor forest management and other factors that are just as important to fire behavior because he "knew that it would detract from the clean narrative centered on the negative impact of climate change and thus decrease the odds that the paper would pass muster with Nature’s editors and reviewers."

He added such bias in climate science "misinforms the public" and "makes practical solutions more difficult to achieve."

"Identifying and focusing on problems rather than studying the effectiveness of solutions makes for more compelling abstracts that can be turned into headlines, but it is a major reason why high-profile research is not as useful to society as it could be," Brown wrote in an X (formerly Twitter) thread on Sept. 5.

California Assembly leader James Gallagher, a Republican, blasted liberals by saying that they "cherry-pick data" to "fit their agenda."

"Patrick Brown is saying the quiet part out loud - liberals are cherry-picking data to fit an agenda and push radical policies that drive up the cost of living," Gallagher told Fox News Digital. "Climate change is Democrats’ excuse to avoid blame for turning our forests into tinderboxes."

"If they don’t get serious about forest management, we’re going to see even more mega-fires destroying the landscape," Gallagher continued.

Republican Assembly member Joe Patterson echoed Gallagher's sentiments, telling Fox News Digital that Gov. Gavin Newsom pressures scientists to ignore science and other significant factors that cause wildfires.

"Republicans want scientists to consider all causes of massive wildfires, including climate change," Patterson said. "The problem is Governor Newsom and legislative Democrats want to ignore significant factors such as forest health and fuel load. While they pressure scientists to ignore science, our state is literally burning."

Hey,we have millions of cars, burning oil, where do you think that those combustion-resulting gases (CO2) go?We,humans of this civilization, have broken the natural cycles of Nature, deforested this planet, burned out entire oil reserves, and still do not want to accept that we are warming this planet up!
The results are evident: extreme weather all over, some areas do not have rain, others have too much at once, big hurricanes plague the Caribbean, every time more and more often. But we still do not want to believe, that we are contaminating and fucking this planet up..

All I can say is I've traveled a lil bit around this rick we live on. If anything it is not the US, European or any civilized country doing any harm to this planet. Maby focus a little bit on our third world countries. Even with them they are polluted all to unimaginable hell to the point nothing should be alive. But you know what they are all living and populating like bunnies. Nature will keep on living even after our worst of times.

The only ones that don't want you to believe human activity is helping warm up the planet are the ones that benefit from it. Oil companies, car makers, etc, ... and the politicians who get large donations from their lobbies.
Repeating those lies just because you vote republican makes as much sense as "Guns don't kill people!"

Climate activism is causing great damage to the health of young children, who after listening to this nonsense will go in some psychological depression. I know a few girls who so worried about it and have decided not to marry or have children. Short of killing people or depopulation is the only solution which Bill Gates supports.

Baby sea turtles are baking under the South Florida sun, new study suggests
    2023/09/08
    Published
    2023/09/08 18:01 (EDT)

In Florida there are five types of sea turtles: leatherback, loggerhead, green turtle, hawksbill and Kemp's ridley. - Tiffany Tompkins/Bradenton Herald/TNS
MIAMI — The biggest journey in a sea turtle’s life is in the first steps it takes. They face obstacles like bright street lights, hungry seabirds or raccoons and, once in the water, commercial fishing nets or stray plastic they mistake as a jellyfish snack.

But now, leatherback sea turtles face another risk, according to a new Florida Atlantic University study — rising temperatures from climate change.

“This is a real concern with climate change because there’s already fewer leatherbacks than other turtles, they already have a lower hatchling success, but now we know they actually are going to be impacted by these higher temperatures,” said Sarah Milton, FAU professor of biological sciences and the senior author of the study.

Once a mature female sea turtle digs a hole in the sand with her back flippers, lays eggs and then covers them with sand, her parental duties are complete and the survival of the hatchlings depends on the conditions inside the nest. The warm sand acts as an incubator, responsible for keeping the hatchlings alive. The results of the study published in the journal Endangered Species Research revealed hotter sand lowered the odds of the turtles making it out of the nest and into the water.

    Studying a dozen leatherback nests
Researchers looked at a total of 12 leatherback nests at Juno Beach; four nests each in the early, middle and late stages of nesting season. The day after eggs were laid, biologists removed half of the eggs and put a temperature logger, about the size of a salt shaker, into the center of the nest. The eggs were returned and temperatures were recorded every half hour, day and night, for the entirety of the incubation period.

Once the sand is in the range of 93.2 to 96.8 degrees Fahrenheit, as opposed to 87.26 to 87.8 degrees Fahrenheit, the survival and ability for a hatchling to get out of the nest into water drops significantly, Milton said.

“The leatherback eggs were spending more time than we were expecting at high temperatures,” Milton said.

The study revealing temperatures make it more difficult for sea turtles to make it into the water is only a window to what is to come with climate change causing more frequent extreme heat. In 2022, the average global temperature was 2°F warmer than the 1881–1910 baseline, according to Climate Central.

The leatherback already has a lower hatching rate than other species like the loggerhead and green sea turtle, and biologists aren’t completely sure why. Overall, leatherbacks only hatch about 50% of the time compared to loggerheads at 75% during hot and dry summers.

Despite the species having a lower hatchling rate, researchers were still surprised by the results.

“We actually thought the nests would not get that hot because the leatherbacks nest mostly in March and April into May,” Milton said. “The season is not as hot and they lay eggs deeper, and the deeper you are in the sand the cooler it is. But I was very surprised by how hot the temperature of the nests got even in the early season.”

    Looking at the hatchling evidence
They determined the hatch success by digging up the nest three days after the hatchlings emerged in what they call an evacuation. They counted the shells checking for how many were laid, how many didn’t hatch and which were stuck.

The hatching success rate was 44% in the early season when the nest temperatures reached 92.48 degrees, over 69% in middle of the season when the nest reached 94.46 degrees and 49% in the late season when the nest reached 95.72 degrees.

“It’s amazing how a few degrees makes such a huge difference,” Milton said. “There could be a temperature ‘sweet spot’ for incubation since the mid-season nests had both higher hatching and emergence success and better hatchling physical performance.”

    Fitness test
Just because a sea turtle hatches out of its egg, it doesn’t necessarily mean it will have the strength to make it out of the nest.

The leatherbacks in the hottest nests didn’t crawl slower but were less coordinated. In a test to flip themselves over from their back to their front side, hardly any of them could do it. Across all of the nests, 30% of 119 hatchlings could not right themselves even one time.

The late-season leatherback eggs were smaller because eggs develop quicker in the heat, giving less time for the yolk to turn into tissue. Smaller leatherbacks were more clumsy, while leatherbacks in cooler temperatures produced longer hatchlings more equipped to make it to sea.

The lengths of the flippers were also correlated with temperature. Hatchlings from the highest nest temperatures had shorter flippers compared to hatchlings from mid-season nests that had longer flippers.

Highest concentration of leatherbacks in the U.S.
The highest concentrations of leatherbacks in the U.S. are around Jupiter and Singer Island. Milton suspects one reason they are the first to study temperature impacts on leatherback hatchlings in the U.S. is because there are only hundreds of nests compared to the thousands upon thousands of loggerhead nests.

The solution isn’t as simple as finding ways to cool the nests with water or shade, Milton said.

“When you think that maybe one in 1,000 or even 5,000 make it to adulthood, you’d have to cool off 50 nests to maybe have one make it to adulthood,” Milton said. “So you just can’t do it on a practical scale, no one has the time and manpower to do that on the beach. They just don’t need the disadvantage of rising temperatures from the get-go.”

'Absolutely devastating news': Antarctica warming quicker than models projected

Antarctica is warming at about double the rate of the rest of the planet and far more quickly than widely cited models projected, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Nature Climate Change that swiftly alarmed scientists around the world.

"This is absolutely devastating news," declared climate scientist and University College London professor emeritus Bill McGuire.

"First, one has to wonder if perhaps we have already passed the West Antarctic collapse tipping point," the expert added on social media. "Second, it begs the question, are other climate model projections underestimating the speed of climate breakdown?"

Polar amplification, a phenomenon that causes higher temperatures near the poles, is well established in the Arctic, with a study published last yearshowing that the northern region is warming nearly four times faster than the global average. However, it has been less clearly identified across Antarctica, where scientists must contend with limited available temperature records and natural climate variability.

Due to the lack of Antarctic weather stations covering more than the past six decades, the four researchers behind the new study—who come from various European institutions—analyzed 78 ice cores to determine temperature variability over 1,000 years across seven regions.

The team found "direct evidence of Antarctic polar amplification at regional and continental scales," which major climate models don't show. The study states that "failing to consider the feedback loops causing polar amplification could lead to an underestimation of the magnitude of anthropogenic warming and its consequences in Antarctica."

Lead author Mathieu Casado, of the Laboratoire des Science du Climat et de l'Environnement in France, toldThe Guardian that "it is extremely concerning to see such significant warming in Antarctica, beyond natural variability."

The quandary of detecting the signature of climate change in Antarctica
Nature Climate Change - The effect of global warming on Antarctic temperatures is difficult to quantify, due to short weather observations and large internal variability. Here the authors use ice...

    10:31 AM · Sep 7, 2023

Kyle Clem, a scientist at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand who was not involved with the new research but has studied record high temperatures at one South Pole weather station, told the newspaper that "the implications of this study are of particular importance for considering future changes in Antarctic sea ice, terrestrial and marine ecosystems, and potentially even sea-level rise."

"As far as sea-level rise, ocean warming is already melting protective ice shelves in West Antarctica and causing the West Antarctic ice sheet to retreat," Clem said. He also highlighted the potential impact on coastal ice shelves that protect glaciers, explaining that "this has already been seen on the Antarctic peninsula in recent decades, and it could become a more widespread occurrence around Antarctica sooner than anticipated in a more strongly warming Antarctic climate."

The research from Casado's team was published the same day as a study about the West Antarctic ice sheet published in The Cryosphere.

"With more and more ice being lost in Antarctica over the last years, concerns have been raised whether a tipping point has already been crossed and an irreversible, long-term collapse of the West Antarctic ice sheet has already been initiated," noted lead author Ronja Reese of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany and England's Northumbria University.

"The results of our studies deliver two messages: First, while a number of glaciers in Antarctica are retreating at the moment, we find no indication of irreversible, self-reinforcing retreat yet, which is reassuring," Reese said. "However, our calculations also clearly indicate that an onset of an irreversible retreat of the ice sheet in West Antarctica is possible if the current state of the climate is sustained."

Antarctica warming much faster than models predicted in ‘deeply concerning’ sign for sea levels
Study finds ‘direct evidence’ of polar amplification on continent as scientists warn of implications of ice loss

    7:53 PM · Sep 7, 2023

The new studies follow findings throughout this year that have elevated fears about the impact of human-caused global heating on Antarctica—from researchers revealing in February that Antarctic sea ice coverage hit its lowest January level ever recorded, to a May study that showed a 30% slowdown in vital deep water currents around the continent.

Research from last month warned it is "virtually certain that future Antarctic extreme events will be more pronounced than those observed to date" as humanity continues to burn fossil fuels, the key driver of the climate emergency. Another August study found that when Antarctic sea ice melted last year, it likely killed over 9,000 emperor penguin chicks.

Both Reese and Casado's studies also cap off a week of alarming global data about the climate emergency. International researchers confirmed that greenhouse gas concentrations, global sea level, and ocean heat content broke records last year. Scientists also announced that this summer of deadly heat is the hottest on record.

Biden Calls Climate Deniers ‘Lying Dog-Faced Pony Soldiers’ At International Presser
    By Tommy ChristopherSep 10th, 2023, 2:51 pm

President Joe Biden called climate change deniers a dwindling group of “lying dog-faced pony soldiers” during an international press conference.

The president held a press conference in Hanoi to cap off his trip to the G20 summit in New Delhi, India and his diplomatic meetings with General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng in Vietnam.

Biden took questions from a list of pre-selected reporters, as is customary. When AFP White House Correspondent Aurelia End asked a question about climate change, the president concluded his lengthy response by invoking a colorful expression he says dates back to a John Wayne movie, but which others have suggested is from a Tyrone Power movie:

AURELIA END: You just mentioned the G20. Just this week, the United States warned that if there is no phasing out of fossil fuels, it won’t be possible to reach the goals of the Paris Agreement. There was no agreement at the G20 on fossil fuels. How concerned are you about this lack of consensus?

PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN: … But all kidding aside — so, there’s — we have — I think the other thing that’s dawning on people — many of you who are e- — foreign policy experts have been engaged for a long time. Did you ever think you’d be sitting at a G20 conference where everyone was preoccupied with the notion of global warming? Not a joke. Did you ever think that?

And there’s a — my — my brother loves having — there’s famous lines from movies that he always quotes. You know, it’s — and one — one of them is — there’s — there’s a movie about John Wayne. He’s an Indian scout. And they’re trying to get the Ap- — I think it was the Apache — one — one of the great tribes of America back on the reservation.

And he’s standing with a Union so- — so he’s — they’re all on their — and they’re on their horses in their saddles. And there’s three or four Indians in headdresses, and the Union soldiers — and the Union soldiers are basically saying to the Indians, “Come with me, we’ll take care of you. We’ll — everything will be good.”

And the Indian scou- — the Indian looks at John Wayne and points to the Union soldier and says, “He’s a lying, dog-faced pony soldier.”

Well, there’s a lot of lying, dog-faced pony soldiers out there about — about global warming, but not anymore. All of a sudden, they’re all realizing it’s a problem. And there’s nothing like seeing the light.

TWO LEADING PRINCETON, MIT SCIENTISTS SAY EPA CLIMATE REGULATIONS BASED ON A ‘HOAX’:
"William Happer, professor emeritus in physics at Princeton University, and Richard Lindzen, professor emeritus of atmospheric science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), argued that the claims used by the EPA to justify the new regulations aren’t based on scientific facts but rather political opinions and speculative models that have consistently proven to be wrong.
“The unscientific method of analysis, relying on consensus, peer review, government opinion, models that do not work, cherry-picking data and omitting voluminous contradictory data, is commonly employed in these studies and by the EPA in the Proposed Rule,” Mr. Happer and Mr. Lindzen wrote. “None of the studies provides scientific knowledge, and thus none provides any scientific support for the Proposed Rule.
“All of the models that predict catastrophic global warming fail the key test of the scientific method: they grossly overpredict the warming versus actual data. The scientific method proves there is no risk that fossil fuels and carbon dioxide will cause catastrophic warming and extreme weather.”
Climate models such as the ones that the EPA is using have been consistently wrong for decades in predicting actual outcomes, Mr. Happer told The Epoch Times. To illustrate his point, he presented the EPA with a table showing the difference between those models’ predictions and the observed data."
