Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) said on Sunday that she wished that the chaos in the House GOP was “surprising,” blaming ousted former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) for the tumult in the party.

“What we’ve seen is a result of really the leadership decisions that Kevin McCarthy made all the way back after the 2020 election ― and certainly after Jan. 6,” Cheney told CNN’s Jake Tapper after he asked about the House GOP “fiasco” on “State of the Union.”

She continued: “And looking the other way in the face of the kind of assault on our democracy that we’ve seen from Donald Trump and his allies in the House, including Jim Jordan. Elevating those members, frankly, some of whom are white supremacists, some of whom are antisemitic, a number of whom were involved directly in the attempt to seize power and overturn the election.”

Cheney ― who once criticized GOP leadership for enabling white nationalism ― said it’s not a surprise to see those Republicans “empowered,” adding that “it’s really dangerous.”

Her takedown of House Republicans arrives after Rep. Jim Jordan’s (R-Ohio) speaker bid burned out after three failed votes on the House floor last week.

During Jordan failed attempt to win the speaker’s gavel, Republicans who weren’t backing him reported intimidation efforts, including their family members receiving anonymous threats via text and voicemail.

Republicans’ search to fill the speaker’s seat continues this week as they look for a candidate who can secure 217 votes from the 221-member House GOP conference.

Cheney, former vice chair of the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection, noted the extent to which political violence and threats have “reared their head once again,” saying they never should have become part of the country’s politics.

Tapper later asked Cheney, a harsh critic of Donald Trump, if she traces the threats of violence to the former president.

“I think you certainly would have to trace it back ― in its modern version ― to Donald Trump,” she replied.

“And we now know, frankly, because of the lie, we know that the lie about the election, we know that telling people that they have to use violence in order to take back their country, we know that that lie was very effective in sparking violence,” Cheney continued. “And it hasn’t stopped.”

Donald Trump said Monday that Jesus Christ would be the only viable candidate for speaker of the House.

"There's only one person that can do it all the way," he told reporters at a rally in New Hampshire.

"Do you know who that is? Jesus Christ. If Jesus came down and said, 'I want to be speaker,' he would do it. Other than that, I haven't seen anyone that can guarantee it."



Trump's comments come after Republicans on Friday rejected Ohio GOP Rep. Jim Jordan for the speakership role after a third crushing vote against him in the House.

"Now, nine Republicans are currently official candidates for the post. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer is considered the leading candidate, but he has a complicated relationship with Trump. On Monday, Trump gushed that Emmer, is 'my biggest fan,'" Insider reported.

But the former president then instructed his allies to "hammer" him, according to a report.

Former President Donald Trump appears to be toying with a Republican lawmaker who has ambitions of becoming the next GOP speaker.

Punchbowl News' Jake Sherman reports that Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) had a phone conversation with Trump on Saturday in the hopes of talking about reported reservations Trump has about letting him become the most powerful man in the House of Representatives.

But just two days after the call, reports the Washington Post's Leigh Ann Caldwell, Trump gave his allies the green light to take Emmer down.



"Trump has directed his allies to hammer Emmer, according to people close to Trump," she writes on Twitter. "As of last night he was likely to stay out of it. While he might not say anything, he’s asked his allies to."

Trump allies early on Monday morning began trash-talking Emmer to Politico's Playbook, with one MAGA Republican telling the publication that Emmer is "openly hostile to Trump."

"It’s laughable that he, at the end of the day, would end up being the speaker of the House," the source told Politico. "Even if he gets the majority of the majority, he will come far short for members who won’t vote for him on the floor."

Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) was nominated as House speaker on Tuesday by the Republican conference.

After five rounds of voting in the GOP conference, Emmer was named speaker designee. Emmer defeated Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA). Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) dropped out before the final round.

Donald Trump's supporters have been vocal opponents of Emmer because he voted to certify the 2020 presidential election. Other Republicans oppose him because he voted to protect same-sex marriage.



Trump on Monday directed his allies to "hammer" the candidate.

It was unclear if Emmer could get the votes needed to become speaker in a House floor vote.

Kevin McCarthy is floating a plan that would make him House speaker once again, but this time around he would be accompanied by Trump ally Jim Jordan as assistant speaker, NBC reports.

McCarthy was removed from the position by eight hardline Republicans including Matt Gaetz, after which McCarthy threw his support behind Jordan's speaker bid. Jordan, however, was unable to achieve the number of votes needed to get the gavel. Then, several other Republicans similarly failed to get the votes.

Now, there is a new plan under which the two would join forces, according to NBC.

"Amid the impasse, McCarthy is floating a plan that would reinstall him as speaker and make Jordan, a conservative Trump ally, the assistant speaker, according to three sources familiar with McCarthy’s pitch," the outlet reported.

NBC asked why this was happening at this point in time, and was reportedly told that the Republicans are "desperate."

"Asked why the idea — which lacks key details, like how it would be enacted and whether it could even gain enough traction to happen — was being floated now, a GOP lawmaker replied: 'We’re desperate," NBC reported. "While the idea might seem far-fetched and it has not been pitched broadly within the GOP Conference, it is being discussed among some Republicans after Emmer, the third GOP nominee, dropped his bid. A source briefed on the idea likened it to the Speaker Nancy Pelosi/Assistant Speaker Katherine Clark arrangement that the Democrats had."

The outlet further reports that McCarthy "melted down" in conference meetings on Tuesday.

"He had two 'outbursts' behind closed doors today, the sources say, that were about his objections to quickly moving to a nominating vote for Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., the runner-up to Emmer, the lawmakers said," NBC reported.
