House elects Johnson as speaker as Republicans rally.

Rep. Mike Johnson was elected by the House to become the next speaker as Republicans rallied behind their fourth nominee to replace former Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Johnson could afford only a handful of defections from his fellow Republicans in the chamber-wide vote, but unlike prior candidates, there were no defections to his candidacy from his party.

He won 220 votes, needing around 217 to become speaker.

Democrats meanwhile continued to vote for Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. He picked up 209 votes from his fellow Democrats.

Johnson scored his party's nomination late Tuesday, with several members absent and three voting present. In just the hours from Tuesday, though, Johnson has shored up support from the three Republicans who voted present in Tuesday's late nomination vote.

Johnson also got support from former President Trump, who gave his support for the GOP nominee, urging Republicans to "get it done, fast" ahead of a potential House speaker vote.

The new speaker of the House is in a 'covenant marriage,' a religiously-influenced legal agreement that makes it harder to get a divorce

    • Rep. Mike Johnson, the new speaker of the House, is in a "covenant marriage."

    • That's a religiously-influenced legal arrangement in which it's much harder to get a divorce.

    • Johnson told a reporter in 2001 that he had encouraged other friends to do the same thing.
If the newly-elected speaker of the House wants to get a divorce, he'll have a harder time doing so than most Americans.

That's because Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana, the fourth Republican to be nominated for the position since Kevin McCarthy's ouster three weeks ago, entered into what's known as a "covenant marriage" in 1999.

An evangelical Christian, Johnson is also a long-time opponent of same-sex marriage and has championed a bill similar to Florida's Parental Rights in Education Law — known to critics as "Don't Say Gay."

Under Louisiana state law, couples sign a document in which they agree to seek marital counseling before getting a divvorce. Additionally, couples can only get divorced on a limited set of grounds, including for adultery, if one partner committed a felony or faces imprisonment, or physical or sexual abuse.

In other words, it's not a no-fault divorce, in which couples can easily dissolve their marriage for any reason.

"A covenant marriage agreement may not be dissolved, rescinded, or otherwise terminated by the mutual consent of the spouses," reads the relevant portion of Louisiana state law.

Louisiana became the first state to pass a law to create covenant marriages in 1997, and Arizona and Arkansas later followed suit. It remains a relatively rare arrangement, with only 2% of Louisiana couples opting into it.

"My wife and I both come from traditional Christian households," Johnson told ABC in 2005. "My own parents are divorced. As anyone who goes through that knows, that was a traumatic thing for our whole family. I'm a big proponent of marriage and fidelity and all the things that go with it, and I've seen firsthand the devastation [divorce] can cause."

Johnson's wife, Kelly, told ABC that the arrangement "shows me that he wants it to be forever."

"I think that it would be a pretty big red flag if you asked your mate or your fiancé, 'Let's do a covenant marriage,' and they said they don't really want to do that," said Kelly Johnson.

In 2001, Johnson told a reporter that he had encouraged his friends to do the same thing.

"Because so few people have chosen covenant marriage in Louisiana, it seems like an unpopular idea," he said at the time. "It's not unpopular — it's just unknown. Once the message is out there, a whole lot more people will choose it."

      Lolwut?

I’m addressing the core issue. His rigid religious convictions are relevant (whether or not I think that’s right) to how he may behave in executing the duties of the office he’s been given.

I hope for your sake he avoids that. I kinda doubt it, personally, but you just never know.

The religious convictions of lawmakers are things y’all beak off about quite a bit when they’re not Christian Fundamentalist, so you know, two-way street.

Anytime religion enters the discussion the liberals get nervous and start twirling.
It's almost like they're afraid they might accidentally touch a cross or something.

No, it's quite simply that religion has no place in legislative politics. Says so in that pesky document you like to refer to so often.

I know all you elderly white fellas would like to believe that there's no harm in adding a 'so help me God' here or there - I mean, y'all aren't often impacted adversely by much - but you apparently wouldn't know a slippery slope if you slid down one.

It is both amusing and in a way said that you know so much more about out Constitution than treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans do.

Such as it is customary to say "so help me God" at the end of taking the oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic. But the Constitution certainly does not require that. The Constitution clearly states someone can "swear" or merely just "affirm" if someone does not believe in God or even just doesn't want to drag God into it.

So anytime we see someone trying to drag God into governing we know they do not believe in the Constitution.

Johnson promoted and got treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans in Congress to sign onto the "Independent State Legislature Theory."

Under that theory state legislatures could reject the popular vote and just nominate any electors they want. Fortunately the Supreme Court rejected the theory. But it is clear the treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans reject democracy and want a dictatorship.

Yes, New House Speaker Mike Johnson Once Wrote in Support of Criminalizing Gay Sex

    Speaker Mike Johnson

By Andrew Kaczynski and Allison Gordon, CNN

(CNN) — Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has a history of harsh anti-gay language from his time as an attorney for a socially conservative legal group in the mid-2000s.

In editorials that ran in his local Shreveport, Louisiana, paper, The Times, Johnson called homosexuality a “inherently unnatural” and “dangerous lifestyle” that would lead to legalized pedophilia and possibly even destroy “the entire democratic system.”

And, in another editorial, he wrote, “Your race, creed, and sex are what you are, while homosexuality and cross-dressing are things you do,” he wrote. “This is a free country, but we don’t give special protections for every person’s bizarre choices.”

At the time, Johnson was an attorney and spokesman for Alliance Defense Fund, known today as Alliance Defending Freedom, where he also authored his opposition to the Supreme Court ruling in Lawrence v. Texas – which overturned state laws that criminalized homosexual activity between consenting adults.

ADF wrote an amicus brief in the case which supported maintaining criminalization.

“States have many legitimate grounds to proscribe same-sex deviate sexual intercourse,” Johnson wrote in a July 2003 op-ed, calling it a public health concern.

“By closing these bedroom doors, they have opened a Pandora’s box,” he added.

Now, Johnson is the speaker of the House at a time when a majority of Americans are strongly supportive of gay rights.

In the House Republican Conference’s voting for their speaker nominee,

, who initially beat out Johnson, came under fire from conservatives for voting to codify same-sex marriage in 2022.

Johnson, according to Punchbowl News, reportedly made an issue of Emmer’s vote. Johnson voted against the bill. In 2022, Johnson also introduced a bill that some describe as a national version of what critics have called Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

In the mid-2000s, Johnson’s anti-gay rhetoric was harsh. In September 2004, Johnson wrote in support of a Louisiana amendment banning same-sex marriage saying it could lead to people marrying their pets.

“Homosexual relationships are inherently unnatural and, the studies clearly show, are ultimately harmful and costly for everyone,” he wrote. “Society cannot give its stamp of approval to such a dangerous lifestyle. If we change marriage for this tiny, modern minority, we will have to do it for every deviant group. Polygamists, polyamorists, pedophiles, and others will be next in line to claim equal protection. They already are. There will be no legal basis to deny a bisexual the right to marry a partner of each sex, or a person to marry his pet.”

Johnson added that allowing same-sex marriage could be the downfall of the democratic system.

“The state and its citizens have a compelling interest in preserving the integrity of the marital union by making opposite-sex marriage the exclusive form of family relationship endorsed by the government,” he wrote. “Loss of this status will de-emphasize the importance of traditional marriage to society, weaken it, and place our entire democratic system in jeopardy by eroding its foundation.”

In another 2004 column, Johnson again predicted same-sex marriage could doom America.

“If you were shocked by the moral lapses at the Super Bowl you ain’t seen nothin’ yet,” Johnson wrote. “Experts project that homosexual marriage is the dark harbinger of chaos and sexual anarchy that could doom even the strongest republic.”

You prefer a president who once declared that school busing would make schools a racial jungle?
"Unless we do something about this, my children are going to grow up in a jungle, the jungle being a racial jungle with tensions having built so high that it is going to explode at some point. We have got to make some move on this."
Or maybe you prefer his thoughts about minority voting?
"If you have a problem figuring out whether you're for me or Trump, then you ain't black,"
      Or how minority kids are just as bright as white kids;
“poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids.”

When I say your profound ignorance is laughable I mean that literally as in making me laugh my ass off at you.

You don't even know what a communist is. Its just a buzzword the right wing false propaganda machine has thrown out so ignorant and low information people like you can squawk it like the good little brainwashed parrot you really are.

Which only proves I am the real American and you are a brainwashed treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republican. The founders of this nation created the first secular government on the face of the earth at the time. They deliberately wrote God out of the Constitution. They specifically wrote that no religious test could be applied to hold office and the first amercement not only guarantees freedom of religion it also guarantees FREEDOM FROM RELIGION.

The Constitution insures you are free and welcome to your own personal religious beliefs. But the Constitution forbids you from trying to ram your own personal religious beliefs down anyone else's throat. And especially forbids religious beliefs being used to govern.

And the reason I used the 'covenant marriage" pledge is because it identifies Johnson as a Christian fundamentalist that want to inflict Sharia Law For Christians enforced by the American Taliban on the nation. One of the things the Constitution was specifically written to prevent.

But there is a much better one.

'Scripture is very clear': New House speaker tells Congress that God has 'ordained' him

    https://www.rawstory.com/scripture-...ls-congress-god-has-ordained-them-2666063982/

So what is Johnson a fucking king? The Ayatollah? The Pope? Since when are our leaders "ordained b y God" instead of just elected?

And talk about hating the Constitution. Johnson is literally saying the Christian Bible is the governing book of laws. Which makes Christianity the governing religion above all other religions or no religion at all. Which is specifically forbidden by the First Amendment.

And don't fucking try to tell me he is not trying to govern by the bible.

'Lunatic' Speaker Mike Johnson blasted for tying mass shootings to teaching evolution
    https://www.rawstory.com/lunatic-sp...r-tying-mass-shootings-to-teaching-evolution/

What Johnson is saying is according to the bible the world is only 6,000 years old. Humans walked with dinosaurs. and there is no such thing as evolution. And is governing accordingly.

And where else do we see that?

New speaker of the House Mike Johnson once wrote in support of the criminalization of gay sex
    https://www.cnn.com/2023/10/25/politics/mike-johnson-gay-sex-criminalization-kfile/index.html

How dare you even utter the word Constitutions. A document you have never even fucking read. Can't comprehend if you did. And don't even believe in it let alone agree to live under it.

You, Johnson, and the treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans are the ones attacking all the rest of us and the Constitution trying to ram your own personal religious beliefs down our throats and destroying our Constitutional republic and trying to inflict Sharia Law For Christiana enforced by the American Taliban on the nation.

You have no intention at all of respecting and honoring the Constitution and agreeing to live under it. Which makes me sick and makes you the raving hypocrite.

And here again is a point where you make me literally laugh out loud when you get so hysterical you can't even make sense.

But as I have proven again beyond any reasonable doubt the raving ignorant hysterical hypocrite is you.
