Greene called ‘bleach blonde bad-built butch body’ in House screaming match where ‘drinking was involved’

Drinking was allegedly taking place in a committee room where a hearing devolved into insults of “fake eyelashes” and “bleach blonde bad-built butch body” being slung across the chamber by Republican and Democrat lawmakers on Thursday.

Both Republicans and Democrats told Politico that some members had been drinking that evening but no names were made public.

At a hearing to decide if US attorney general Merrick Garland could be held in contempt of Congress, Georgia Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene launched the first salvo about Democrat Jasmine Crockett’s “fake eyelashes”.

“I’d like to know if any Democrats on the committee are employing Judge [Juan] Merchan’s daughter?” Ms Greene said on Thursday evening, referring to the judge who is overseeing Donald Trump’s hush money trial. Mr Trump and other Republicans have attacked Judge Merchan as too partisan, and highlighted that his daughter has worked for Democrats.

“Please tell me what that has to do with Merrick Garland?” Ms Crockett, a freshman member of the Oversight Committee, asked.

“I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading,” Ms Greene said.

The hearing then erupted with Chairman James Comer unable to contain proceedings for around an hour.

Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rebuked Ms Greene’s “disgusting” and “unacceptable” remarks about Ms Crockett.

“How dare you attack the physical appearance of another person?” Ms Ocasio-Cortez said.

The Republican taunted her, asking whether her feelings had been hurt.

“Oh girl, oh baby girl, don’t even play,” Ms Ocasio-Cortez retorted, leading to her counterpart mockingly adding: “Oh really, baby girl?”

Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the committee, also admonished her. “That’s beneath even you Ms Greene,” he said.

The back-and-fourth continued, with Ms Greene agreeing to strike her words from the record. However, she did not agree to apologise to Ms Crockett, which caused further anger in the Democratic camp.

When asked, Ms Ocasio-Cortez refused to enter a debate with Ms Greene, which resulted in the Republican’s final damning remark: “Yeah, you don’t have enough intelligence.”

Mr Comer said that Ms Greene’s insult ultimately did not violate House rules, leaving Ms Crockett scratching her head at the ruling.

“If someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody’s bleach blond, bad-built butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct?” she asked the chairman.

Her question was met with confusion from Mr Comer. “Uh, what now?” he asked.

That prompted Republican Representative Anna Paulina Luna to request that Ms Crockett’s words be stricken from the record, inviting a vocal response from Democrats.

“I’m trying to get clarification,” Ms Crockett said. “Don’t tell me to calm down, because y’all talk noise and then you can’t take it, because if I come and talk s*** about her, y’all gonna have a problem.”

The hearing was the latest chapter in House Republicans’ failed attempts to impeach Mr Biden since they voted to begin an impeachment inquiry in December.

House Speaker Mike Johnson admonished members after the hearing.

“When we disagree — even vehemently — we have got to treat one another with dignity and respect,” he said. “I think it’s an important principle.”

Last week, Ms Greene led a failed effort to remove Mr Johnson, with an overwhelming number of Democrats joining almost all Republicans to save him.

It was totally predictable. Kevin the Coward sold his soul to the most stupid, ignorant, mentally ill, and extreme treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans in the House and put them in positions of power to get their votes and make him Speaker. But just because they are committee chairs and/or members of powerful committees doesn't mean they will stop being stupid, ignorant, and mentally ill. And I need to add cowards. Which is why all the treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans investigations and hearings have turned in to just hilarious shit shows where the progressive/liberal/Democrats just have filed days making fools of them. And much worse steal all the 30 second bites which is what most Americans see.

And I literally laugh at James Comer who is the weakest and most impotent committee chair I have ever seen. He's terrified of MTG and can't control her and the Democrats just run over the top of him. Like when Rep.Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) of used a point of inquiry to get “bleach blonde bad built butch body” on the record and Comer looked like a deer in the headlights unable to comprehend what Crockett had just done.

Comer criticizes ‘repeat offenders of breaking decorum’ during Congressional hearings

House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) on Thursday pinned the blame of last week’s raucous contempt hearing on a few “repeat offenders of breaking decorum” on Capitol Hill.

“It’s very unfortunate, it wasn’t the first time, I hope it’s the last time,” Comer quipped in an interview on CNN. “The members that have been constant repeat offensives of breaking decorum have all been called out and hopefully it won’t happen again.”

Nearly an hour of disorder unfolded during the contempt markup for Attorney General Merrick Garland when Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) clashed after the Georgia Republican accused Rep.Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) of wearing “fake eyelashes.” Crockett then hit back at Greene, seemingly referring to her as “bleach blonde bad built butch body.”

“You’re not supposed to engage in personalities,” Comer said during his CNN appearance while explaining the incident. “And unfortunately, that’s what happened in the last committee hearing. Representative Greene’s words were struck [from the record], I think Representative Crockett said some very inappropriate things as well.”

The chaos of the Oversight hearing began after Greene asked if any Democrats on the panel were employing the daughter of Judge Juan Merchan, who is overseeing former President Trump’s hush money trial in Manhattan. Republicans have repeatedly targeted Merchan’s daughter for working at a progressive digital agency.

“Please tell me what that has to do with Merrick Garland,” Crockett asked. “Do you know what we’re here for?”

“I don’t think you know what you’re here for,” Greene responded. “I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading.”

Democrats immediately criticized Greene for the comment, with Ocasio-Cortez yelling “that’s disgusting” and calling her remarks “absolutely unacceptable.”

Ocasio-Cortez, Greene and Crockett then got into a back-and-forth, with other lawmakers occasionally stepping in to take jabs at the other side.

At one point, Crockett asked if her hypothetical comment — which appeared to be a jab at Greene — would break congressional protocol.

Comer on Thursday noted the committee hearing was a “very important one” that was “hijacked by a few unfortunate soundbites.”

After the disruption, the Oversight Committee eventually voted 24-20 to advance a measure to hold Garland in contempt of Congress in an effort to censure him for failing to turn over audio recordings of President Biden speaking with special counsel Robert Hur.

Comer appearanced on CNN to Fdiscuss a bill he introduced Wednesday with Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) that would require presidents to make a series of disclosures about their relatives’ foreign earnings.

So, Biden is a pedophile....wait, isn't Hillary Clinton a pedophile too? Or, maybe she just ran a child trafficking operation from the basement of a pizza shop. It seems every opponent of trump is a pedophile. Gotta be true because I read about it on the internet.

I should go back and look for it because when people first started showing up at Trump rallies in "Q" shirts and other QAnon identifiers and I posted what QAnon believed in including the stories about Democrats drinking the blood of children to stay young at least one member jumped all over me saying I was trying to sensationalize a tiny group that had nothing to do with Trump because he could not control who showed up at his rallies.

And now here we are with QAnon leading the treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republican party with Trump as their spokesman.

And IO bet if I asked him now he would say hell yes without doubt Hillary Clinton drinks the blood of children.

    How ironic.
@toniter posts about the bamboozle, but sometime back posted about his reading "somewhere" that one of the relatives of the Columbine shooters praised their marksmanship.

This is a lie, no relative of the Columbine shooters praised their marksmanship.

Now we don't know if toniter made this up himself or if he read it on the internet and spewed it back out.
What we can surmise though is that toniter wanted to shock and offend with his post and he didn't confirm it before he spewed it.

Then he posts his Carl Sagan thingy about "bamboozle".

    Now that's irony for you.

I never thought I would see President Biden, the Democrats, and even members of the Biden administration take this tact. The left as a general rule has more or less adhered to when they go low we go high. Democrats have always tended to fight like Marquess of Queensberry Rules while treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans fight back ally style using any weapon they can get their hands on.

But President Biden and the Democrats have learned they simply cannot try and stay above the fray with our democracy at stake and have to get down there and fight Traitor Trump and the treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans on their level. And the only thing more surprising than that is how good at it they are. It is hilarious to watch President Biden and the Democrats in action stealing the 30 second sound bites from the treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans by making fools of them. Which the media just loves to cover.

And to measure the extent of that just look at who we are talking about here. The old stick in the mud himself Merrick Garland. At his contempt hearing no less.

Garland mocks House Oversight Committee over raucous contempt hearing

Attorney General Merrick Garland on Thursday took a quick jab at the House Oversight Committee for devolving into highly publicized chaos last week during a markup to hold him in contempt of Congress.

When asked Thursday if he watched the Oversight Committee’s hearing last week, Garland quipped, “I caught part of that hearing on ‘Saturday Night Live.'”

Nearly an hour of disorder unfolded during the contempt markup when Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) clashed after the Georgia Republican accused Rep. leaving the page." data-wf-tooltip-position="bottom" data-wf-reset-every="90">Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) of wearing “fake eyelashes.”

Despite the disruption, the Oversight Committee eventually voted 24-20 to advance a measure to hold Garland in contempt of Congress in an attempt to censure him for failing to turn over audio recordings of the president speaking with special counsel Robert Hur. The House Judiciary Committee also passed the measure in a 18-15, party-line vote.

NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” poked fun at the raucous meeting during its “Weekend Update” segment of last Saturday’s episode.

“But seriously, I am very disappointed,” Garland said of the vote during a Thursday press conference. “The Justice Department, as I’ve explained before, has gone to extraordinary lengths to accommodate the legitimate interests of the committees.”

House Republicans have repeatedly sought the recordings from Hur’s interview with President Biden during his probe of the president’s handling of classified documents. Lawmakers already have the transcripts of the conversation, but GOP members argue the audio recordings will be more revealing, arguing pauses could speak to Hur’s commentary about the president’s cognitive functions or show a hesitancy to ask questions.

“I have released the full and unredacted report of Mr. Hur. We permitted Mr. Hur to testify for over five hours on everything that happened in connection with this investigation, and we provided the transcripts of the interviews in which the committee is interested,” Garland said.

Hours ahead of the committee’s markup hearings last week, Biden invoked his executive privilege to block House Republicans from obtaining the recordings.

Garland on Thursday maintained this was done to “protect the Justice Department’s ability in future investigations to get cooperation in high-profile cases, particularly involving the White House.”

The uproar during the Oversight hearing began after Greene asked if any Democrats on the panel were employing the daughter of Judge Juan Merchan, who is overseeing former President Trump’s hush money trial in Manhattan.

Democrats immediately lambasted Greene for the comment, with Ocasio-Cortez yelling “that’s disgusting” and calling her remarks “absolutely unacceptable.”

A back-and-forth among Ocasio-Cortez, Greene and Crockett followed, with lawmakers occasionally stepping in to take jabs at the other side.

At one point, Crockett asked if a hypothetical comment — which appeared to be a jab at Greene — would break congressional protocol.

“I’m just curious, just to better understand your ruling,” Crockett said, referring to a ruling House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) made about Greene’s comments. “If someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody’s bleach blonde bad built butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct?”

Rep. Jared Moskowitz Trolls GOP Rep. James Comer On The Bromance That Never Was
    David Moye

Congress is going into recess, and Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) admits it’s going to be hard for him to “quit” his relationship with Republican Rep. James Comer of Kentucky.

The two members of the House Oversight Committee have long had an adversarial relationship, one that first came to light in November, when the committee chair called Moskowitz a “Smurf.”

Apparently Comer was miffed when Moskowitz noted that the chair had engaged in the types of wire transfers that he claimed showed President Joe Biden was engaged in corrupt business deals.

Since then, Moskowitz has continued to mock Comer’s baseless investigation of Biden, as well as Comer himself in various ways.

For instance, when Comer called him “Little Moskowitz” on Newsmax last November, the Florida congressman noted the comment was the “first true thing Comer has said all year.”

Moskowitz also dared Comer to second a motion to impeach Biden in March, only to get crickets from the chair.

On Thursday, as members of Congress prepared to break for a recess, Moskowitz made one last attempt to troll Comer: A video tribute to their “bromance” set to the tune of Lionel Richie’s “Hello.”

“The Biden impeachment is dead, but my relationship with Comer is very much alive. I’ll miss you during recess, James,” the congressman posted on social media.

What a great example of psychological projection falsely accusing others of what you are actually doing, Clarise. Or should I say Mrs. Misclick?

Let's try a really simple example. Carl Sagan was an American astronomer, planetary scientist, and science communicator. So given Sagan was a scientist let me ask you a question. Is global warming/climate change a hoax?

GOP in limbo on Garland contempt vote as some Republicans cast doubts

GOP in limbo on Garland contempt vote as some Republicans cast doubts
The House GOP effort to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress is in limbo, with Republicans unsure whether they have the votes to pass the measure.

Two committees last week easily passed resolutions to censure Garland, and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has since projected confidence, saying he expects the measure to pass “handily” once lawmakers return from their weeklong Memorial Day recess.

But a source familiar with behind-the-scenes discussions said there are at least two Republican members who have privately said they will not vote for the measure.

That’s a problem given the razor-thin House GOP majority, which leaves Republicans only able to pass bills with one or two defections, if Democrats are unified.

Leadership was whipping the Garland vote this week as some GOP members suggested some of their colleagues are not yet on board.

“We’re not gonna do it unless we know we can pass it,” Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) told The Hill, adding “there’s more than one” GOP colleague who has reservations.

He said dynamics could shift over the break as “people figure out how to get comfortable with it.”

Rep. Dan Bishop (R-N.C.) said some members may be “squishy” on the issue.

“If they got problems, they’re from squishes, not me,” he said when asked about the timing of the vote.

The fact the House did not vote on the Garland matter over the past week was notable.

Johnson has called the vote timing a “calendar issue,” and while a delay isn’t unheard of, leadership typically schedules votes on such matters while they still have momentum coming out of committee.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (Md.) the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, said matters were complicated by the rowdy May 15 Oversight meeting to consider the matter, which descended into chaos with a lengthy sidebar over whether to censure Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) after she commented on Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s (D-Texas) use of fake eyelashes.

Chaos erupts in hearing as Greene, Ocasio-Cortez clash over ‘fake eyelashes’ jibe at Crockett

“Some of the members on the other side were saying that Chairman Comer presided over so much chaos and dysfunction in our committee that they lost the thread of what they were doing there,” Raskin said.

“I mean, the whole country was looking at Marjorie Taylor Greene talking about fake eyelashes, but nobody was focused at all on their outlandish claim that the attorney general of the United States is in contempt of Congress.”

GOP lawmakers have presented a confusing case about the need to hold Garland in contempt after he refused to turn over the audio recordings of President Biden’s interview with special counsel Robert Hur.

Lawmakers already have a transcript of the interview, and on the eve of the committees’ meetings, Biden claimed executive privilege over the tapes.

Impeachment investigators have claimed the recording is an important part of their probe, even as the transcript makes clear topics from their impeachment probe were not covered in the course of a two-day interview squarely centered on how classified documents ended up in Biden’s home and a prior office.

Some of the GOP’s more moderate members have said they don’t see any connection between the tapes and the impeachment investigation, even as they likewise argue Garland should turn over the tapes.

Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.), a target for Democrats in this fall’s elections, was noncommittal about how he would vote while being critical of Garland.

“They’re not tied together. It’s two separate issues,” he said of impeachment and the tapes.

“The Department of Justice has a responsibility to comply with lawful subpoenas. You don’t get to pick and choose which ones are lawful,” he said, telling reporters “we’ll see” when asked about his vote.

Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), who also represents a swing district, cast it as an important election year issue.

“We’re entitled to have that tape, bottom line,” he said, answering “not really” when asked if he saw the audio as connected to the impeachment probe.

He said voters should be able to hear the tapes given Hur’s comments about Biden’s mental acuity and remarks that jurors might view him as “a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”

“The prosecutor made a decision not to prosecute because he said he wasn’t mentally up to the trial — I’m using my own words. So we should know what’s on that tape, because that’s an important thing. We have an election going on,” Bacon said.

That is one of the top concerns from Democrats, who have argued the GOP only wants the tapes to slice and dice for campaign commercials.

“They want the audio tape, and that’s obviously for political TV commercials,” Raskin said Thursday.

Garland defended his decision at a Thursday press conference, saying he went to “extraordinary lengths” to accommodate Congress’s request.

“I have released the full and unredacted report of Mr. Hur, we permitted Mr. Hur to testify for over five hours on everything that happened in connection with its investigation, and we provided the transcripts of the interviews in which the committee is interested,” Garland said.

“But on the other side, the president of the United States has exerted executive privilege in order to protect the Justice Department’s ability in future investigations to get cooperation in high-profile cases, particularly involving the White House. My job is to protect the Justice Department’s ability to conduct those investigations, my job is to protect the rule of law — and that’s what I’m doing.”

If leadership brings the contempt resolution to the floor when it returns, it will happen within days of Garland’s June 4 testimony before the House Judiciary Committee.

Many in the GOP are eager to get to a vote, even as the chairs of the two committees that lead the effort — the House’s Oversight and Judiciary committees — were unclear on timing.

House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) told reporters Thursday he had been given no assurances on the timing of any vote but said he “assume[d] it’ll come to the floor.”

And House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) said he expected a vote shortly after recess.

“The case is as compelling as it gets. So I’m all for doing it. And I think it’s gonna happen as soon as we come back,” he told The Hill.

“I’m for doing it as soon as possible.”

Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-PA) erupted on live television Monday over House Judiciary Committee Republicans she argues are destroying Americans' faith in its political institutions to help an "irrational child of a man," former President Donald Trump.

The committee is a powerful one, she noted, and one on which Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) once served.

"They have spent most hearings and most mark-ups tearing down our faith in our institutions," said Dean. "Literally."

She recalled when the FBI or DOJ officials would come to testify, and Republicans like Rep. Jim Jordan (OH) or Johnson would spend their time shredding the departments.

"Then go out to a microphone like this and say, I can't understand why Americans just don't have faith in our institutions," Dean recalled. "They're a part of the problem. They are complicit alongside the least patriotic president we will ever see."

Protect Democracy director Ian Bassin compared Republicans to a parable about a small-town preacher who heard a report that a great flood was coming and he needed to seek safety. As the waters climbed higher, rescuers in a boat stopped by and asked if they could help him, he promised that God would save him.

When the water rose to the top of his house, he clung to the roof. A helicopter came offering to rescue him, but again, he refused, promising God would save him. When he drowned and arrived at the "Pearly Gates," he asked why and was told, "I sent you a weather report, a boat, and a helicopter. What are you doing here?"

Bassin then argued Republicans have been given a lifeline to save their party and themselves from Trump and the MAGA right.

Dean argued in today's politics,Trump comes before all else as was witnessed by Republicans' response to his criminal conviction.

"For public servants who swear to the Constitution and to the rule of law to be calling it ... 'a travesty of justice?' Will they find it a travesty of justice that Hunter Biden is sitting trial now?" she asked. "Or is this America?"

Dean said she found it strange that Republicans aligned themselves with a man of Trump's character.

"They're dealing with the most irrational child of a man. And yet they don't ever say, you know what, it's actually his behavior that he is being held to account for," Dean said.

"After all, this was behavior days before a national election where he wanted to bury a story that would have hurt his electoral prospects. They know that. They know the truth of it. And the jury has spoken."

A hearing in the House Oversight Committee once again devolved into chaos as Republican lawmakers attempted to pillory former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci over his involvement in the response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Fauci was summoned before the committee on Monday, where Republicans grilled him over the effectiveness of social distancing measures, his relationship with major pharmaceutical companies, and a slew of pandemic-era conspiracies.

Never one to miss an opportunity to perform for C-SPAN’s cameras, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) refused to address Fauci as a doctor, refused to allow him to answer questions, and said the veteran civil servant deserves to be in prison.

“Mr. Fauci, because you’re not Doctor [Fauci], you’re Mr. Fauci in my few minutes,” Greene said.

After Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (D-Mass.) raised a point of order, arguing Greene’s refusal to address Dr. Fauci by his title constituted a violation of the committee’s rules, the Georgia congresswoman said Fauci “does not deserve to have a license. As a matter of fact it should be revoked and he belongs in prison.”

Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) then ordered Greene to suspend and to refer to Fauci according to his appropriate title. The verbal back and forth came just weeks after Greene derailed an Oversight Committee hearing by attacking the appearance of another congresswoman.

Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Fla.) apologized to Fauci on behalf of Democrats on the committee for Greene’s antics. “This might be the most insane hearing I’ve attended,” Garcia said, pointing out that both his mother, a health care worker, and his stepfather died of Covid-19. “I lost both of my parents during the pandemic, so I take this very personally, especially when other members of this body – who are tasked to be responsible and actually help the American people — attack medical professionals like you,” he said.

In his own remarks to the committee, Raskin called out Republican’s hostility towards Fauci. “They are treating you like a convicted felon. Actually, you probably wish they were treating you like a convicted felon,” Raskin said. “They treat convicted felons with love and admiration. Some of them blindly worship convicted felons,” he added, noting the sycophantic ire with which Greene and other Republican lawmakers reacted to the criminal conviction of former President Donald Trump last week.

Whenever Fauci was actually allowed to respond to questions from Republican lawmakers, he took the opportunity to push back on many of the conspiracies about his role in the pandemic.

When asked if he received any royalties from Big Pharma since 2021, Fauci responded that he’s made “zero” dollars in pandemic royalties. “I got $122 for a monoclonal antibody I created 27 years ago,” Fauci added, clarifying that the decades-old research was unrelated to the pandemic.

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.) attempted to press Fauci over claims that Covid-19 originated from a research laboratory, or the so-called “lab leak” theory.

“I don’t think the concept of there being a lab leak is inherently a conspiracy theory,” Fauci responded. “What is conspiracy is the kind of distortions of that particular subject, like it was a lab leak and I was parachuted into the CIA like Jason Bourne and told the CIA they shouldn’t be talking about a lab leak.”

Fauci also addressed continued concerns about his safety given the slew of conspiracies pushed by prominent Republicans about his involvement in the pandemic response.

“Do you continue to get threats today?” Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) asked.

“I do,” Fauci responded. “Every time somebody gets up and says I’m responsible for the deaths of people throughout the world.”

I think this will be a case of be careful what you wish for. Jordan and his fellow treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans have repeatedly proven themselves to be the most stupid ignorant and mentally ill members of Congress. While Alvin Bragg has proven himself to be intelligent, extremely well versed in the law, and sane.

Manhattan District Attorney lAlvin Bragg agreed on Friday to testify before Congress as Republicans attempt to discredit former President Donald Trump’s conviction, but indicated that could happen only after Trump is sentenced next month.

Bragg’s office has resisted calls to testify before Congress citing the ongoing case against the former president, but in a letter Friday to GOP Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Bragg stated his willingness to testify at a future date.

The letter from Bragg’s general counsel said the Manhattan DA’s office is willing to engage with the committee to decide a date for the testimony as well as to “better understand the scope and the purpose of the proposed hearing.”

“This Office is committed to voluntary cooperation. That cooperation includes making the District Attorney available to provide testimony on behalf of the Office at an agreed-upon date, and evaluating the propriety of allowing an Assistant District Attorney to testify publicly about an active prosecution to which he is assigned,” the letter reads.

A Manhattan jury found Trump guilty on 34 felony charges of falsifying business records on May 30. Bragg, a Democrat, presented the first indictment of a former US president when he announced charges against Trump last year.

Bragg accused Trump of falsifying the repayment of his former lawyer Michael Cohen in order to cover up a $130,000 payment Cohen made to adult film star Stormy Daniels to keep her from speaking out about an alleged affair with Trump before the 2016 election.

Jordan then demanded Bragg and prosecutor Matthew Colangelo appear for a hearing on June 13 after Trump’s guilty verdict was reached.

CNN has reached out to the DA’s office as well as Jordan’s office for additional information.

Bragg’s willingness to testify is the latest action in a series of attempts by House Republicans to try to defend Trump amid his legal troubles by going after those involved in his cases.

Jordan, along with House Oversight Chairman James Comer and House Administration Chairman Bryan Steil, sent a letter calling for Bragg’s testimony last year ahead of the trial and criticized Bragg’s investigation into the former president as an “unprecedented abuse of prosecutorial authority.”

Along with Bragg, Jordan has previously looked to investigate other members in the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, as key allies of Trump attempted to frame his criminal charges as politically motivated. Jordan subpoenaed former New York County Special Assistant District Attorney Mark Pomerantz last year for his role investigating Trump and his business empire and sought voluntary cooperation from Colangelo.

Similarly, Republicans have questioned Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis on whether she used federal funding in her state-level investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia.

'False' and 'irresponsible': DOJ smacks down Jim Jordan's 'conspiracy' in sharp letter

David Badash, The New Civil Rights Movement
    June 11, 2024 1:11PM ET

Calling Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan's allegations "speculation," "conspiratorial speculation," "unfounded," "baseless," "irresponsible," and "false," the U.S. Dept. of Justice in a strongly-worded and trenchant letter smacked down the House Republican's suggestion the New York State criminal prosecution of Donald Trump was a project of the Biden administration.

Assistant Attorney General Carlos Felipe Uriarte from the DOJ Office of Legislative Affairs writes that Jordan's Judiciary Committee "has demanded information from the Department because of what you describe as a 'perception that the Justice Department is' behind the District Attorney’s so-called 'politicized prosecution' and a 'perception that the Biden Justice Department is politicized and weaponized' to that end." [Italicized words original to DOJ document.]

"The Department does not generally make extensive efforts to rebut conspiratorial speculation, including to avoid the risk of lending it credibility. However, consistent with the Attorney General’s commitment to transparency, the Department has taken extraordinary steps to confirm what was already clear: there is no basis for these false claims."

Describing their "comprehensive search for email communications ... between any officials in Department leadership, including all political appointees in those offices, and the District Attorney’s office regarding any investigation or prosecution of the former President," Uriarte says:

"We found none. This is unsurprising. The District Attorney’s office is a separate entity from the Department. The

Department does not supervise the work of the District Attorney’s office, does not approve its charging decisions, and does not try its cases. The Department has no control over the District Attorney, just as the District Attorney has no control over the Department. The Committee knows this."

Continuing his remarks, Uriarte also notes that despite finding no emails Jordan demanded, "information-sharing between a U.S. Attorney’s Office and local prosecutors is standard and happens every day all over the country."

    And he issues a warning:

"The self-justifying 'perception' asserted by the Committee is completely baseless, but the Committee continues to traffic it widely. As the Attorney General stated at his hearing, the conspiracy theory that the recent jury verdict in New York state court was somehow controlled by the Department is not only false, it is irresponsible. Indeed, accusations of wrongdoing made without—and in fact contrary to—evidence undermine confidence in the justice system and have contributed to increased threats of violence and attacks on career law enforcement officials and prosecutors."

"Our extraordinary efforts to respond to your speculation should put it to rest."

ABC News adds that "last week, Attorney General Merrick Garland repeatedly rebuked the allegations as baseless and dangerous, pointing to an uptick in threats department officials have seen directly stemming from such conspiracy theories."
