Because the Soviets thought the communication line was secure - it ran under the ocean after all - the communications were not encrypted. Ketchup, or Catsup, was once sold as medicine because of its fermented nature and ingredients, which were believed to have health benefits. Ketchup's history as a medicine dates back to ancient China, where it was originally made from fish innards, soybeans, and meat byproducts and was known as Ge-thcup or Koe-cheup, which means "fish sauce".

Physicians in China believed the sauce was medicinal, and British sailors later brought it back to Britain, where it was modified with mushrooms and walnuts. In traditional Chinese medicine, fermented foods were thought to be beneficial for digestion and overall health.

Other facts you didn’t know about the condiment: In the early 1800s, a horticulturist in Philadelphia began making ketchup from tomatoes, which were thought to cure stomach ailments and indigestion. In 1834, Dr. John Cooke Bennett added tomatoes to ketchup and believed the blend could treat common ailments like diarrhea, jaundice, rheumatism, and indigestion.

Bennett also made ketchup pills that were sold as medicine and claimed to cure scurvy. The pills became very popular, but some medicine producers created substandard versions by adding laxatives and no tomato content. These false claims led to the collapse of the ketchup medicine empire in 1850.

I think it is interesting that we human beings find so many ways to disassociate from our feelings, to separate ourselves from those we imagine to be different than ourselves, when in truth we all have far more in common than anything that might justify division.
