The IBM 360 mainframe was introduced in 1964. Many companies who had earlier not bought computers bought 360 mainframes to computerize much of their cherical work. Then they had to hire people who knew how to program those machines.

To program an IBM 360 one needed to learn the COBOL and the Assembler programming languages, and OS and DOS job control language. These could be learned in six monthis to a year by someonw with an IQ of at least 115.

By the time I learned computer technology the field had become much more competitive, and much more specialized.

After I got a job programming COBOL a woman told me that the next new thing was the C programming language and the UNIX system. She said that there was a big demand for people who knew those skills, but few people did. She said she would teach me those skills for free, and send me out on interviews. Unfortunately, I decided to stay with COBOL and OS job control language. By the time I learnded C and UNIX those skills were also competitive.

The way to get places in progamming is to learn the next new thing when it is newely introduced, and look for a job when employers are begging for that experience, and they cannot demand two or more years of experience, because the skill did not exist two years ago.

Unfortunately, the next new thing might become obsolete in a few years. In that case your skills are not transferable.

It is difficult to precict the future of computer technology. I did not begin to learn until 1982 I took two introductory courses. The text books speculated on where the field was going. Neither of them mentioned personal computers, the internet, or Microsoft, although each existed
