Trump’s security advisor met with leader of Austrian party founded by Nazis and loyal to Putin

onald Trump’s choice for national security advisor met at Trump Tower with the leader of a far-right Austrian political party founded in the 1950s by ex-Nazis.

Retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, who the president-elect has tapped to coordinate national security in his administration, met several weeks ago with the head of Austria’s Freedom Party, which reached a cooperation agreement with Russia’s ruling party, reported the New York Times.

The agreement was seen a clear signal that the Kremlin is forging bonds with right-wing political parties across Europe as part of a coordinated effort to weaken Western democracies — including the United States.

Heinz-Christian Strache, the Freedom Party’s leader, announced the agreement Monday on his Facebook page, where he also revealed he’d met with Flynn last month in New York City at the building where Trump lives and has based his transition team.

The five-year, non-legally binding cooperation agreement calls for regular meetings and collaboration on economic, business and political projects between representatives from Russia and Austria — where the Freedom Party has gained political influence this year.

The agreement was signed for United Russia by Sergei Zheleznyak, a deputy to the party’s general secretary who is banned from the U.S. for supporting Russian actions in Crimea, the newspaper reported.

Zheleznyak welcomed the Austrian group to Russia by inviting them to cooperate on Europe’s “migration crisis,” which right-wing populists around the world have used to stoke anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant fears.

Flynn, who led the Defense Intelligence Agency until 2014 and was an outspoken critic of President Barack Obama, has ties to Russia and its leader, Vladimir Putin, and has compared Islam to cancer in a book and posts anti-Muslim conspiracy theories on social media.

It’s not clear what Flynn and Strache, the Austrian political leader, discussed during their meeting.

The Freedom Party’s candidate, Norbert Hofer, barely lost the presidential race in May, but it’s gaining public support over the two mainstream parties that have governed Austria since World War II.

White House faces exodus of foreign policy experts ahead of Trump's arrival
An unusual number of the National Security Council’s more junior officials are looking to depart, amid concerns about incoming adviser Michael Flynn

The White House is struggling to prevent a crippling exodus of foreign policy staffers eager to leave before the arrival of the Trump administration, according to current and former officials.

The top level officials in the National Security Council (NSC) are political appointees who have to submit resignations and leave in a normal transition. The rest of the 400 NSC staff are career civil servants on secondment from other departments. An unusual number of these more junior officials are now looking to depart.

Many are concerned by a proliferation of reports about the incoming national security adviser, Michael Flynn. On Wednesday the Washington Post reported that Flynn had improperly shared classified information with foreign military officers. On the same day, CNN reported that the former Defense Intelligence Agency chief had this week deleted a tweet he had sent out a few days before the election that linked to a fake news story suggesting Hillary Clinton took part in crimes against children.

“Career people are looking get out and go back to their agencies and pressure is being put on them to get them to stay. There is concern there will be a half-empty NSC by the time the new administration arrives, which no one wants,” said one official.

The official added that the “landing team” sent to the NSC – Trump representatives who are supposed to prepare for the handover to Trump appointees – have been focused on issues of process and how the office functions, rather than issues of substance involving an explanation of current national security threats and the state of the world the new administration will inherit.

The Trump transition team in New York did not respond to a request for comment. The current NSC spokesman, Ned Price, said in an email: “The administration has undertaken its national security transition planning with the utmost rigour and seriousness in order to effect the most seamless and responsible transition.”

Price added: “We have been working since this spring to assemble a broad variety of transition material focused on critical national security challenges as well as NSC organizational issues and the NSC-led interagency policy process. The NSC staff also is offering to the incoming team in-person briefings and discussions with current NSC leadership and staff, and is coordinating statutorily required interagency homeland security exercises that will include both incoming and outgoing national security leadership from departments and agencies, as well as senior career public servants who will provide continuity through the transition.”

It is not clear how many members of the incoming team have taken up the offer of personal briefings. Flynn himself has been meeting a steady flow of foreign diplomats in New York in recent days. He met the UK national security adviser, Mark Lyall Grant, over the weekend, and the French president’s diplomatic adviser, Jacques Audibert, a few days earlier.

It is unclear how much contact there is between the embryonic policy teams in New York and the landing teams in Washington, however.

“Most of the folks I have talked to at the three agencies – DoD (Department of Defense), state and White House – claim they have little or no interaction with these teams to date,” Julianne Smith, a former deputy national security adviser to Vice-president Joe Biden, said.

“There are very important substantive handoffs that need to be occurring that are in fact not happening. That is creating added concern about the career civil servants who are in these agencies, wondering what they are in for.”

Smith, now director of strategy and statecraft at the Center for a New American Security, added: “Many of them are starting to look at other options; some of the younger people are looking to switch careers, return to graduate school, try and go abroad. I have seen and met with a lot of these people and there does seem to be an unusual level of worry and concern and fear.”

It could be hard for NSC staffers “detailed” (seconded) from other departments to return to their former positions ahead of schedule. That would require the agreement of their managers and could harm longterm career prospects. Those that do leave however, will leave vacancies that are hard to fill. Their replacements would have to be drawn from career civil servants at other agencies, as the White House does not have the budget to fund the posts if they are filled by political appointees. As a result,d the process of filling the empty posts could take months. Ultimately, Republicans want to reduce the NSC to 200 staff, but it would have to be restructured if it is to be cut in half.d

“An understaffed White House is one potential risk right now and another is having a team that hasn’t had the substantive briefing they need from the current team for the handoff,” Smith said.

Reports from the state department suggest most of its staff are taking a wait-and-see approach to the prospect of having the ExxonMobil oil chief executive, Rex Tillerson, at the helm. On Thursday, most of the Democrats on the House foreign affairs committee wrote to the current secretary of state, John Kerry, offering his staff protection against a “witch-hunt” by the new administration against civil servants who worked on Obama policies Trump wants to reverse. The letter was sent after the energy department refused to hand over to the Trump transition team a list of names of staffers who had worked on climate change.

“I fear that Trump’s rejection of both the content and the conclusions offered to him by the intelligence community will have a profound chilling effect on the recruitment of new assets, and the willingness of existing assets to continue to provide information,” Carleson writes. “Because, why should someone risk his or her life to provide sensitive information that the world now knows will go unread in our highest office?”

According to the former CIA official, Trump’s disregard for human intelligence has “consequences beyond Trump’s own dearth of information, because once again, it serves to erode the motivation of those who might provide us with information we desperately need—information that may include details of threats to American lives and infrastructure, for example.”

“The world knows that, in the incoming administration, facts will be ignored, and reasoned analysis will be rejected,” she writes. “On an individual level, the why determines the what, and without the motivation of knowing that their sacrifices will ultimately make a difference, CIA sources may choose, in Trump’s parlance, to walk away from the deal.”

Newsweek's Kurt Eichenwald says Trump mental-hospital claim was intended as 'signal to a source'

Newsweek reporter Kurt Eichenwald said Tuesday that his baseless claim that President-elect Donald Trump was once institutionalized in a mental hospital was actually part of a series of jokes and intended to be a "signal to a source" to talk to him.

Eichenwald's explanation came Tuesday on "Good Morning America," as host George Stephanopoulos asked him about the September tweet in which he said, without evidence, he believed "Trump was institutionalized in a mental hospital for a nervous breakdown in 1990."

"Any regrets about that?" Stephanopoulos asked.

"There's a long story behind it," Eichenwald said after some brief laughter. "When you go through the full lead-up to that tweet — there was a reporting purpose for that tweet going out, which is more than you are going to want to hear about.

"I was making fun of Fox News and the rest, who were doing 'Hillary has seizures,' 'Hillary has multiple sclerosis,' 'Hillary has Parkinson's,' you know, let's go to Dr. Oz," he continued, referring to a point in the election during which the two major-party presidential nominees' health was under the microscope.

"So I was writing a series of jokes leading up to that with the intent of sending that tweet, which was a signal to a source to talk to me," Eichenwald concluded.

That explanation went unchallenged by Stephanopoulos, who moved on to another topic.

Making a false charge against a presidential candidate on a public platform the way Eichenwald suggested he did would represent a sharp break from traditional journalism ethics.

In an interview last week, Eichenwald struggled under repeated questioning from Fox News host Tucker Carlson to explain his outlandish mental-hospital claim.

Eichenwald has also been in the news in the past week after he vowed to press charges against an anonymous Twitter user who sent him a flashing GIF, which Eichenwald said caused him to have a seizure.

A representative for Newsweek did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Vanity Fair’s sources claim that reality TV mogul Mark Burnett was reluctant to leak out damning footage of Trump shot during The Apprentice because he feared it could hinder his ability to get future stars to agree to work on his shows.

“Burnett has been able to persuade countless minor celebrities to come on his shows with the implicit promise that he would never make them look bad,” the report notes.

Earlier this week, comedian Tom Arnold claimed that he had recordings of Trump using racial slurs and calling his own son a “retard,” but has said he didn’t release them in part because he wasn’t sure how much of an impact they would have made.
