    Alice Paul Enters Jail

1917 US suffragette Alice Paul begins a seven-month jail sentence for peacefully picketing in support of the Women's Suffrage (right to vote) Amendment at the White House in Washington, D.C.

    Alice Paul

    Profession: Suffragist

    Nationality:
    American

Biography: Alice Paul's mother was a member of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, and it is through her that Paul learnt about the women's suffrage movement.

After graduating from Swarthmore College, which her grandfather had co-founded, Paul went on to work in social work for a while. Eventually she concluded that this was no way to make a real difference, which led to her seeking other avenues for her efforts.

Paul ended up moving to London to study sociology and economics at the London School of Economics, here she became involved with the English suffrage movement and was a regular participant in demonstrations and marches. It was here that she met Lucy Burns, with whom she was to return to America and establish the National Woman's Party.

Ultimately Paul's spirited involvement in the woman's suffrage movement paid off with the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920.

Later Paul would also contribute to the fight for the Equal Rights Amendment, which asserted: "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex."

While the ERA movement is still ongoing, Paul was successful in adding protection for women to the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

On October 21, 1966, one of my top favorite pop records of the era hit #1 when Lulu reached the top of the US singles chart for five weeks with the song "To Sir With Love", which was the theme song from the film of the same name. It stayed at #1 for 5 weeks.

Lulu also did a fine acting job in the film starring Sidney Poitier, which was a huge success, making over $40 million at the box office, despite a budget of only $640,000.

    1949: Huxley writes to Orwell

Seventeen years after writing 'Brave New World,' a masterpiece of dystopian science-fiction, British author Aldous Huxley writes George Orwell to congratulate him on his "profoundly important" new book, '1984.' Orwell had been a student of Huxley's at Eton some three decades earlier.

Germans Massacre Men, Women and Children in Yugoslavia

Between October 18-October 21, 1941, German soldiers go on a rampage, killing thousands of Yugoslavian civilians, including whole classes of schoolboys, in what has become known as the Kragujevac massacre.

Despite attempts to maintain neutrality at the outbreak of World War II, Yugoslavia finally succumbed to signing a “friendship treaty” with Germany in late 1940, finally joining the Tripartite “Axis” Pact in March 1941. The masses of Yugoslavians protested this alliance, and shortly thereafter the regents who had been trying to hold a fragile confederacy of ethnic groups and regions together since the creation of Yugoslavia at the close of World War I fell to a coup, and the Serb army placed Prince Peter into power. The prince—now the king—rejected the alliance with Germany-and the Germans retaliated with the Luftwaffe bombing of Belgrade, killing about 17,000 people.

With Yugoslavian resistance collapsing, King Peter removed to London, setting up a government-in-exile. Hitler then began to carve up Yugoslavia into puppet states, primarily divided along ethnic lines, hoping to win the loyalty of some-such as the Croats-with the promise of a postwar independent state. (In fact, many Croats did fight alongside the Germans in its battle against the Soviet Union.) Hungary, Bulgaria and Italy all took bites out of Yugoslavia, as Serb resisters were regularly massacred. In October of 1941, 2,300 men and boys were murdered in Kragujevac, Kraljevo saw 7,000 more killed by German troops, and in the region of Macva, 6,000 men, women, and children were murdered.

Serb partisans, fighting under the leadership of the socialist Josef “Tito” Brozovich, won support from Britain and aid from the USSR in their battle against the occupiers. “The people just do not recognize authority…they follow the Communist bandits blindly,” complained one German official reporting back to Berlin.

Thank you again for the condolences, I'm glad to read that you're still here post MI! I've treated a lot of MI patients during my time in EMS that sadly didn't make it.. I know quite a few rigid riders that LOVED their bikes but the toll it took on the body was anything but fun..... It was only the second time I had a bike go down on me. It was my own fault that I got hurt really. I was actually waving down cars and trucks and when no one would stop, I got pissed and tried to do it myself..... I've already added that decision to the long list of choices I've made over my lifetime.....

I can't wait to get the restrictions lifted so I can start my workouts again..... It seems like I can feel my body getting soft and it's making me nuts...... I also realize that there are a few things that I've taken for granted that you really don't give much thought to until you're not able to do them like wiping your ass, taking a shower, laughing, sneezing and coughing, ect..... I have every intention of staying upright and feeling the wind in my face and the sights in my eyes..... When folks ask me what it is that drives me to ride, I tell them the only way to explain it is to get on a bike and go for a ride, it really is indescribable.....

I found that difficult being hooked up to monitors and drips too. Thank god I wasn't subjected to the indignity of a 'bedpan'. They actually wanted me to get up and move around. I think they were just waiting for me to fall on my face... you know how those people in the cardiac unit get their jollies out of that. My loss is riding... I went everywhere after I retired... still wanted to do the ALCAN Hiway and ride to Yellowknife... maybe next life... and no more buttbusting rigids.

Plenty of interesting stuff has happened on October 22 throught the centuries, from JFK letting America know about the Cuban Missile Crisis, to the first demonstration of a parachute, to the killing of Pretty Boy Floyd, but who cares about all that crap?

Om October 22, 1969, the much anticipated album, Led Zeppelin II (still my favorite), was released on Atlantic Records in the UK. The Jimmy Page produced album, which was recorded over six months between four European and three American tours, peaked at #1 in both the UK and US, going on to sell over 12 million copies in the US alone, (and spending 138 weeks on the UK chart).

The album introduced the monstrously popular Whole Lotta Love, Heartbreaker (forever married to Livin' Lovin' Maid), The Lemon Song, Ramble On, Bring It On Home, What Is and What Should Never Be, Moby Dick, and Thank You. Soon, every aspiring lead guitarist was copying the Heartbreaker solo.

Recording sessions for the album took place at a wide variety of studios in the UK and US, including Olympic and Morgan Studios in London, England; A&M, Quantum, Sunset, Mirror Sound and Mystic Studios in Los Angeles; Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee; A&R, Juggy Sound, Groove and Mayfair Studios in New York City; and R&D Studios.

The album is now recognized by various writers and music critics as one of the greatest and most influential rock albums ever recorded.

Ramble On - maybe my favorite Zep tune (OMG - that bass!):

    The entire album:

It's an awesome album! My buddy bought it and we wore the grooves off it, then I found one in excellent condition at a used record store for 25 cents! Same store wher I got a pristine Live at Leeds by the Who for 20 cents! I figure the owner didn't like those bands.

As a fledgling guitar player, the solo break after the 'orgasm' part of Whole Lotta Love was the first solo I ever copied from a tune.

I loved every album up till Houses of the Holy. Their music just got too cerebral for me. I've got the albums, but I always go back the ones that got me fired up about that band, the really edgy rock and the acoustic stuff on the third album was absolutely PRIMO. I learned to play guitar on those tunes... still pull out those songs once in a while.

Inspired by his time confined behind the high ramparts of a Hungarian prison, French balloonist Andre-Jacques Garnerin floats 3,200 feet above Paris, releases the hydrogen balloon from his new invention the parachute, and under a 23-foot wide canopy he descends safely to the ground.

Surrounded by congressional leaders, President Herbert Hoover (seated, center) signs the Farm Relief Bill into law, Washington, D.C., June 15, 1929.

On this day in history, Oct. 22, 1928, Republican presidential nominee Herbert Hoover spoke of the "American system of rugged individualism" in a speech at New York's Madison Square Garden, according to multiple sources — coining the term "rugged individualism," which amplified his philosophy of personal freedom and volunteerism, not government intervention.

Hoover was the 31st president of the United States, serving in that role from 1929‐1933.

He was born in Iowa in 1874 and grew up in Oregon.

October 23 commemorates the sad day in 1983 when Hezbollah suicide bombers drove truckloads of high explosives into the barracks of U.S. Marines and French paratroopers in Beirut, Lebanon, and detonated, killing 241 U.S. servicemen and 58 French troops.

Here's why those troops were there: In 1975, a bloody civil war erupted in Lebanon, with Palestinian and leftist Muslim guerrillas battling militias of the Christian Phalange Party, the Maronite Christian community, and other groups. During the next few years, Syrian, Israeli, and United Nations interventions failed to resolve the factional fighting, and on August 20, 1982, a multinational force including 800 U.S. Marines was ordered to Beirut to help coordinate the Palestinian withdrawal.

The Marines had actually left Lebanese territory on September 10 but returned in strengthened numbers on September 29, following the massacre of Palestinian refugees by a Christian militia.

In eras past, Beirut had been called 'The Paris of the Middle East' until it all went to shit.

Rest in Peace, and bless our troops.
