So I was thinking about all of the statues of Confederate Generals and the like they're taking down as more came down just recently in New Orleans. Personally, I have personal reasons to hate slavery. However I believe that history must be remembered, and the soldiers of the South of whom 99.9% probably never had slaves and were fighting for their states and other things deserve to be remembered as well. It was not all about slavery.

But okay, lets go after slavery. I'm all for that. So that means we also need to eradicate monuments and images of these individuals:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Presidents_of_the_United_States_who_owned_slaves

    Fair is fair ;)

My ancestors fought for the Union. I do not like nostalgia for the
Confederacy. Nevertheless, I think this should be a local issue. If
the voters of a city want to remove the Confederate statues, the
statues should be removed. I do not want the federal government
to pressure states to do this, however.

The Confederacy was an evil country dedicated to the preservation of
    an evil institution.

One must remember that Abraham Lincoln specifically preserved slavery State of Kentucky even after his Emancipation Proclamation

He famously said that he would love to have God on his side but he needed Kentucky .

In a letter to Horace Greeley he wrote that if he could preserve the union without freeing A single slave he would do that .

So the evil of slavery simply became a rallying call.

And Lincoln knew how to generate his own good PR. And people believe his crap right up to the present day .

Most Confederates were fighting for a political ideology and specifically states rights .

And one of the other reasons they were fighting was because they saw the north not investing in southern infrastructure as they were in the north . So they didn't see a lot of value in staying in the union .

I think that it should have been clear to the south that they didn't have a chance to win because they did not get foreign support as the US did in its own revolutionary battle .

But they continued to fight anyway and shows the level of stubbornness and complete lack of concern about human life.

The whole thing was quite tragic and the loss of life proportionately would be in the millions today .

But if we want to continue to pretend that the war was fought entirely or even mostly on the basis of slavery who am I to question anyone's moral relativity ?

Personally I don't care slavery happened, it was the norm for thousands of years.
Do I approve of slavery? NO!
But some folks act like they just got freed last week.
Monuments? Keep them if you want them, it makes me no difference.
Statues and monuments are usually outhouses for pigeons.
Where's the outcry about modern day slavery?
All people care about is what's pounded in their pea sized brain by our educational system. Pfft!!

Yep we keep fighting the Nazis and the confederacy and are completely blind to the dangers of Islam and the treatment of their own people within predominantly Muslim countries .

I think that it is simple cowardice to keep beating a dead horse because it safe to do that instead of dealing with the real dangers of the world with people who can actually defend themselves

Also the pretty much public prohibition on the Confederate battle flag has increased sales of the flag to private individuals .

So the people that are the most concerned about this have definitely helped the Chinese flag making industry .

I'm sure that the Chinese have no qualms about the morals of this .

I can remember just a little while back people were complaining about some terriorist group tearing down statues, buildings, and religious objects.
I see this as the same thing.
The statues were very important to the people of New Orleans. They were one of the most liked tourist draws. Millions of people have pictures taken in front of them.
They had been there over 100 years.
Sad that we are sending out military to other countries to fight terriorist when we have them right here in our own country slowly destroying it.

I think that we should tear down the Egyptian pyramids next. They were built by Hebrew slaves.

I saw on the History channel They could have been built by aliens from a distant galaxy far away . So you might want to check that one out . And according to Michelle Obama Hell she couldn't stand living in the White House cause she thought that was built by slaves. But wasn't some people are so mis informed . Lots and lots of people believe crap they hear on ABC NBC CBS MSNBC CNN and other misguided news media sources.

Meanwhile people are being killed in the same streets the statues overlook. Police are too busy protecting city workers destroying the statues than protecting the citizens from each other. Wonder if they will clean up that cesspool when they get the statues removed or will shit still run down the streets?

The South lost the war. General Grant should have taken the South and burnt it down. All farms, crops, etc. should have been taken and every Confederate soldier tried for treason and hanged (especially Lee and Davis).

Beyond that, fuck the monuments. Officials there are being respectable. I would have cleared some space and had the monuments destroyed.

Well most historians doubt that the pyramids were built by the Jews and some even doubt that that they were built by slave labor at all but I like your style :)

Bust them fuckers apart. They were built by slaves and most have a confederate flag flying on top of them.
    Level every pyramid there is.

Here in Ms. we have a man who is sueing the state to make them take down the state flag as it makes him sick.

I live in the South, in the former Capital of the Confederacy so I am surrounded by this and grew up with the history. I can appreciate the history and sacrifice of both sides and understand the tragic stain that slavery left on this country.

The War wasn't fought for slavery, but to preserve the Southern economy and way of life, of which slavery was the main element. You can split that hair as much as you like.

The South lost, they don't have the right to fly their little flag everywhere. That's reserved for winners. I don't care if that flag displays your family honor, or of it's meaning was bastardized by the KKK. Put it away. It offends me that a flag of another country flies over official government grounds of my country. Keep it in a museum or a cemetery so that people won't forget this tragic war.

African slavery is over and has been since 1865. Nor was it unique to this country, it existed all over the world. I was never a slave owner nor was anyone in family. No one alive today was African slave nor were your parents or grandparents. I don't owe you an apology or any reparations.
Slavery still flourishes in the world in the form of sex trafficking. Some estimate that there are now more sex slaves in the world today that there were African slaves in America in 1861.
Nobody seems to care about that.

Which brings me to the monuments. They are all over the city, large and small. Of particular interest is Monument Ave. which has 6 very large statues. The street is beautiful and breath taking. Google it if you have an interest. Already there are some scattered rumblings to take them down, but I doubt that will happen yet.
I think that they should stay put and I can even see myself out there protesting if the need were there. I would guess that most people don't even give them a second thought, but some people seem to want to find offense in anything. These people must not be catered to.
History can't be erased nor should it. Let the statues stay to remind us of where we were and of how far we have come and how far we still need to go.

I could literally write volumes on this and of the history in my area but I have gone on long enough.
I will finish by saying thank God that the Union was saved or the history of the world now could be vastly different.

I have done quite a bit of research into my family tree.
I have most of it back to about 1200.
Some of my family has fought in every war we have had and on both sides.
Some have been slaves and some slave owners.
If you are looking for an excuse for not making something out of your life all you need to do is look back in your family tree.
Around here most blacks do not even know their own father. Hell, their mother may not even know his name.
I keep hearing them talk about history. How about looking back just one generation and see what your parents have done to make your life hell before blaming something that happened long before that.

The issue shouldn't be the statues, but how we teach about the war(s).

The civil war was a key point in US history. It should not demonize or vilify any side; rather the elements that led to the war, what coulda woulda shoulda been done to avoid it, why it wasn't done or couldn't be done, and how to avoid war in the future.

The civil war could have been avoided and slavery abolished.

Slavery was already on it's way out.
Why take care of a bunch of slaves when you had machinery that could do the work better, cheaper, faster, and with less of the bullshit?
