GOP donor made abortion hush payment through Michael Cohen — and scored meeting with Trump one day later

A new investigation by the Associated Press on Monday revealed that top Republican donor Elliott Broidy scored an important meeting with President Donald Trump to lobby on behalf of the United Arab Emirates.

What the AP’s investigation didn’t note, however, was that this meeting took place just one day after Broidy made his first payment in a hush money agreement with former Playboy model Shera Bechard, whom he had allegedly impregnated during an affair and who eventually terminated her pregnancy

According to the original Wall Street Journal report on the payment, Broidy negotiated a hush money agreement with Bechard through longtime Trump attorney and “fixer” Michael Cohen.

The Journal’s sources say that “the first payment was due December 1st” — and, according to the AP, Trump and Broidy had a lengthy meeting on December 2nd, just one day later.

And that’s not all — the Daily Beast now reports that Broidy’s company, a Virginia-based security firm called Circinus LLC, has scored a massive $800 million in foreign defense contracts since the start of Trump’s presidency — a figure that dwarfs all the previous payments it has received for defense contracts before Trump assumed office.

How are all these events connected? Earlier this month, University of Colorado Boulder law professor Paul Campos laid out evidence in New York Magazine that this abortion hush money payment was much more likely intended to protect President Donald Trump rather than Broidy.

Among other things, Campos noted that Cohen used the same pseudonyms in his hush money contract for Broidy and Bechard — “David Dennison and “Peggy Peterson” — that he used in his nondisclosure agreement between Trump and adult film star Stormy Daniels.

Additionally, Campos argued that Trump seems much more likely to have had an adulterous relationship with a former Playboy model, as he was a frequent guest at the Playboy Mansion.

Added to all this, he pointed out that Broidy seems like the kind of person who would take both a financial and public relations hit for paying off a mistress who terminated a pregnancy in exchange for boosting his own financial interests.

“Broidy has a history of bribing public officials to enhance the economic prospects of his business ventures,” he wrote.. “In 2009, he pleaded guilty to bribing New York State Comptroller Alan Hevesi. As part of a plea deal which led to the convictions of seven of his co-conspirators, Broidy admitted he made more than one million dollars in illegal payouts and gifts to New York pension authorities.”

Sanders probably could have defeated Trump in 2016. Nevertheless, he would not have had the support in Congress for his far reaching economic reforms. I think it is reasonably likely that Trump will fall hard, taking the GOP with him. 2020 may be a good year for a move toward democratic socialism.

This will not mean a move toward Communism. It will mean that the United States' economy will come more to resemble the economic systems of other affluent democracies.

Ivanka Trump Receives New China Trademarks, Raising Ethics Concerns

First daughter Ivanka Trump's company was granted approval to register several trademarks earlier this month, shortly before her father, President Donald Trump, announced he would help save the Chinese telecommunications company ZTE from financial collapse.

The approval for five trademarks on May 7 for Ivanka Trump Marks LLC to have rights to baby blankets, bath mats and textiles, among other products, was revealed by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington on Friday. The watchdog group wrote on its website that it "isn’t the first time that Ivanka’s and President Trump’s business connections to China have raised potential ethics issues," pointing out that on May 13 the president tweeted he was working with Chinese President Xi Jinping to give ZTE "a way to get back into business, fast."

China gave Ivanka Trump's business final approval for its 13th trademark in the past three months on Sunday, the Associated Press reported, based on trademark office records.

"As a White House adviser, Ivanka has represented the United States at multiple diplomatic events despite the potential conflicts her business interests present," CREW stated on its website. "Although Ivanka has stepped down from her role at her business and has placed it in a trust, she continues to receive profits from the business."

Ivanka Trump Marks LLC applied for the recent wave of trademarks in March 2017, according to CREW. Last year, Ivanka Trump's business was granted preliminary approval for three trademarks the same day she had dinner with Xi at Mar-a-Lago.

The first daughter's company has been criticized for working with Chinese manufacturers with poor work conditions and pay for workers. Furthermore, the president's controversial trade tariffs on China earlier this year exempted his daughter's Chinese manufacturing partners.

Also on Sunday, an effort was unveiled by more than 60 House Democrats to demand a federal ethics investigation into the president's decision to ease a ban on ZTE, which breached its agreement to pay a $1.2 billion fine for conspiring to sell American technology to North Korea and Iran. Shortly before that, the Chinese government had granted a $500 million loan to an Indonesian theme park development project that will include several Trump-branded properties.

Rick Perry’s premium class travel cost taxpayers $63,500 last year in first 7 months alone
He joins a growing list of White House officials linked to outsized spending at the expense of taxpayers.

Energy Secretary Rick Perry is the latest Trump administration official to be linked to costly spending and travel habits. The Energy Department says it spent approximately $63,500 on Perry’s flights alone during his first seven months heading the agency.

According to internal tracking conducted regularly by the Energy Department, Perry took 12 business or first class flights during the 2017 fiscal year, ABC reported Thursday after obtaining the department’s travel logs. Despite the availability of coach fares on all of the flights disclosed, the department paid for Perry’s upgraded travel — adding $51,000 to the total cost in the process.

According to federal guidelines, officials are meant to opt for low-cost travel whenever possible, choosing more expensive alternatives only in rare circumstances.

It is not clear what “exceptional security circumstances” — which can be used to justify such expenses — might have prompted the uptick in Perry’s travel costs. ABC reported that the logs obtained also show Anita Perry, the secretary’s wife, flew business class as well on at least two of the trips. Her seats cost approximately $20,000 and were reimbursed, seemingly by Anita Perry or her husband, according to agency spokeswoman Shaylyn Hynes, per ABC.

Information regarding the specific dates and destinations for Rick Perry’s trips were not immediately made available. Last year, the secretary visited Japan and China along with a number of other destinations both domestic and international.

Swirling questions regarding spending habits are nothing new for the Trump administration. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and former Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price have both faced scrutiny over their spending habits, particularly with regard to flights. Price was later forced to resign amid uproar over his travel costs.

Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke has also come under fire for department financial decisions. Zinke has taken a number of military and chartered flights while conducting official government business. Taxpayers paid $12,375 for only one of those flights, which took Zinke from Las Vegas, Nevada, to Kalispell, Montana, which is located near the secretary’s hometown, Whitefish. The secretary overall spent more than $14,000 on government helicopters last summer, with some of the destinations including areas a short half-hour drive from Washington, D.C.

Zinke’s other spending habits, including the construction of a $139,000 door, have drawn criticism as well.

Arguably the Trump administration official facing the most scrutiny over spending is Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator Scott Pruitt. In February, the Washington Post reported that Pruitt had spent approximately $90,000 on first-class and business travel in June 2017 alone. That total includes a $36,068.50 trip from Cincinnati to New York in order to fly to Rome. Pruitt’s individual total for that trip amounted to $7,003.52, several times the amount paid for other staffers accompanying the official.

Pruitt is currently the subject of at least 14 federal investigations after coming under fire for a sweetheart condo deal last year arranged with the wife of an energy lobbyist was revealed at the end of March. The EPA also paid $43,000 for a sound-proof phone booth in the secretary’s office, which was found to have violated ethics rules. Pruitt additionally approved high raises for certain members of staff with prior experience working for him in Oklahoma.

Pruitt has largely downplayed his culpability in the various instances under investigation, largely leveling blame at his staff and critics. In an interview Wednesday with the Sinclair Broadcast Group’s Boris Epshteyn, Pruitt argued that he valued taxpayer money — which ultimately is what pays for government activities including travel — but indicated that criticisms surrounding his spending habits were “distractions” more so than real areas of concern.

“Well, look, I care so much about taxpayer money,” Pruitt said. “It’s what I’ve done historically when I served at the state level. It’s important that serving this capacity that everyone is a good steward of taxpayer money, but these distractions, these issues that we’ve dealt with largely it emanated from the great work that we’ve been doing.”

And what the article doesn't say is that federal rules allow for an upgrade to business class on flights longer than 5 hours.

And at least Perry was traveling commercial. Well known liberal California senators were using far more expensive government planes, with REALLY expensive catering on their regular travels from their homes to Washington. A practice that stopped only when it was brought to light.

Pruitt spent whopping $3.5 million on personal security in first year as EPA chief
Much more than his predecessors.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Scott Pruitt has spent $3.5 million in taxpayer dollars on personal security in just his first year in the position, CBS News revealed Friday.

This is far more than his two predecessors from the Obama administration, who CBS News says spent between $1.6 to $2 million annually on security.

EPA spokesman Jahan Wilcox defended the spending, telling CBS News that an “unprecedented amount of death threats” necessitated the additional costs. Wilcox also promised that the agency would continue to release the costs of Pruitt’s security detail on quarterly basis in an effort to be transparent.

This revelation, however, did not sit well with some lawmakers on Capitol Hill. “Everything Scott Pruitt said about his wasteful spending turned out to be false,” Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) said in a blistering statement.

“Internal EPA documents show that he requested unprecedented security before taking office, then exaggerated threats against him to justify the expense afterwards,” Beyer continued. “Pruitt tried to downplay his travel costs, justified them through false comparisons to his predecessors, and hid the extent to which these trips were orchestrated by lobbyists and industry. When aides objected or came forward, he had them sidelined or punished.”

Pruitt has been plagued in recent months by numerous ethics issues, leading to at least 10 open investigations into his conduct as EPA administrator, and forcing Pruitt to hire a white-collar defense lawyer.

His suspiciously cheap rent for a Washington, D.C. condo that just happened to be owned by the wife of a top energy lobbyist blew up into a massive scandal. His schedule is filled with speeches to industry groups he is supposed to regulate. And his response to another scandal concerning huge pay raises for two EPA staffers was so unconvincing that not even Fox News was buying it.

Pruitt’s ethics woes show little sign of going away. Just last week during a congressional hearing, he inadvertently revealed that he had an EPA employee help him house-hunt during her personal time without paying her, a violation of federal ethics guidelines.

Pruitt is not the only Trump administration official with spending problems. Fellow officials have spent millions in taxpayer dollars on frivolous items such as antique desks, office renovations, and dining sets. Pruitt may have outdone them all — and broken the law, according to a government report — with his $43,000 soundproof booth, however.

Lawmakers have grown frustrated with Pruitt’s scandals, as shown in last week’s hearing. A few Republicans have finally lost their patience as well, joining calls for him to resign.

He still has the backing of at least one person, though. His boss, President Trump, maintains that Pruitt is doing a “great job.”

Environmental Protection Agency head Scott Pruitt reportedly spent thousands of dollars at a fine jewelry and watch store in the nation’s capital, including more than $1,500 on a dozen fountain pens. The revelation comes amid ongoing questions over Pruitt’s financial decisions as head of the agency.

Emails released as part of an ongoing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit by the Sierra Club and first reported by the Washington Post on Friday show that Pruitt spent a sizable sum of money at Tiny Jewel Box, a Washington, D.C.-based store.

The news comes one day after Pruitt appeared on the conservative Sinclair Broadcast Group’s “Bottom Line with Boris” to defend his spending habits, where he commented that he cared “so much about taxpayer money”.

In an email sent Aug. 14, 2017, an EPA staffer asked Millan Hupp, a longtime Pruitt loyalist and current head of scheduling, to approve an order from the store, which totaled $3,230.

“The cost of the Qty. 12 Fountain Pens will be around $1,560.00,” the staffer wrote. “All the other items total cost is around $1,670.00 which these items are in process. Please advise.”

Hupp responded, “Yes, please order,” and thanked the staffer.

Each of the pens cost $130, leading to the ultimate total. According to local data from Rent Cafe on rent trends, a studio apartment in Washington, D.C. costs $1,642 a month, barely $100 more than the cost of the 12 fountain pens.

Jahan Wilcox, EPA spokesperson, issued a statement Friday morning arguing that the purchases “were made for the purpose of serving as gifts to the Administrator’s foreign counterparts and dignitaries upon his meeting with them.”

“This adheres to the same protocol of former EPA Administrators and were purchased using funds budgeted for such a purpose,” Wilcox said.

Pruitt has come under fire in recent months for a host of financial decisions. The EPA administrator is the subject of more than a dozen ongoing federal investigations. Among other points of contention, Pruitt has faced questions over a sweetheart condo deal arranged with the wife of an energy lobbyist last year.

The lobbyist in question, J. Steven Hart, had official business before the EPA at the time, and reached out on at least one occasion to suggest potential nominees for the agency’s Science Advisory Board, which is meant to be nonpartisan.

In a separate instance, Pruitt okayed the financing of a $43,000 soundproof phone booth built in the official’s office. That purchase was later found to be a violation of federal ethics rules. Sweeping 24-hour security measures have also cost the EPA roughly $3.5 million, nearly double that of his predecessors’, Lisa P. Jackson and Gina McCarthy, who served during the Obama administration. The official’s premium and business class travel cost more than $163,000 in his first year, per EPA records.

According to a New York Times report in April, Pruitt had previously asked the EPA for a number of specialty items, including the fountain pens. He also asked for coins made without the EPA logo and featuring instead a Bible verse and a buffalo in homage to Oklahoma, his home state. The possibility of including Pruitt’s name around the rim was also suggested. Wilcox, the EPA spokesperson, later said the coins were never ordered.

When queried by lawmakers about his financial decisions during two initial appearances before Congress, Pruitt largely punted, leveling blame at his staffers and critics.

“There have been decisions over the past 16 months that, as I look back, I would not make the same decisions again,” he later said during a third appearance, this one before the Senate Appropriations subcommittee, in May. He declined to go any further on the topic.

ZTE hired former Trump aide as lobbyist: report

Chinese telecommunications company ZTE hired a former member of the Trump campaign as a lobbyist amid negotiations with President Trump to loosen restrictions hampering the company's ability to do business with the U.S.

The Daily Beast reported that the company hired Bryan Lanza, a former adviser to both the Trump campaign and Trump's White House transition team, just a day after the president tweeted that he was considering helping ZTE regain access to American markets.

"President Xi [Jinping] of China, and I, are working together to give massive Chinese phone company, ZTE, a way to get back into business, fast. Too many jobs in China lost. Commerce Department has been instructed to get it done!" Trump tweeted last month.

Weeks later, the Trump administration announced a tentative deal to ease the restrictions on the company, a move that faces sharp opposition in Congress. The deal follows a ban from the Commerce Department on any American companies selling selling parts to ZTE, a move that the company says will force it out of business without relief.

Lanza came to work for ZTE through Mercury Public Affairs, a Washington lobbying firm that reported its new client in a May 24 document in accordance with the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

The firm said it would “perform government relations and public affairs services, including setting up meetings with U.S. government officials related to U.S. sanctions” on ZTE's behalf, according to the Daily Beast.

A spokesman for the lobbying firm told the Daily Beast that ”like any company of its size, [ZTE] faces various challenges and we are helping them from a public affairs perspective to manage those issues.”

The Commerce Department issued the ban on American firms doing business with ZTE earlier this year after it accused the company of violating sanctions with Iran. ZTE officials have called the punishment unfair.

Trump in defending a potential deal with the company noted it provides a lot of business to American companies.

Lanza, who is reportedly still in communication with White House officials, was reported last month to also be helping a Russian company owned by a sanctioned oligarch lobby the Trump administration to lift penalties against the firm.

Environmental Protection Agency head Scott Pruitt reportedly obtained VIP tickets to a college basketball game last year from a billionaire coal executive seeking rollbacks of Obama-era regulations on the coal industry, The New York Times reports. The ringside seats at the University of Kentucky game last December belonged to Joseph W. Craft III, a coal executive who donated $2 million to President Trump’s campaign and has been involved in a campaign to reverse environmental restrictions on the industry. Craft, who also contributed generously to Pruitt’s campaigns in Oklahoma, is said to have met with the EPA head more frequently than any environmental groups. Pruitt’s attendance at the Kentucky basketball game, the latest red flag for the EPA administrator amid mounting conflict-of-interest concerns, was left off his official schedule. But he was accompanied by both his security detail and Kentucky state police, according to the Times. An EPA spokesman has said Pruitt paid $130 in cash for two tickets to the game, though the transaction was done in cash, meaning there is no record of it.

Lobbyist Tied To Pruitt Condo Had More Contact With EPA Chief Than Firm Reported

WASHINGTON (AP) — Newly filed reports show the Washington lobbyist whose wife rented a bargain-priced Capitol Hill condo to Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt had far more contact with the agency than previously disclosed, despite repeated denials by both men.

Powerhouse lobbying firm Williams & Jensen amended its 2017 disclosure filings to show that former chairman J. Steven Hart contacted EPA on behalf of the Coca-Cola Company, pork producer Smithfield Foods and a board overseeing the finances of hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico.

Pruitt has denied that Hart lobbied his agency in 2017, most recently during congressional testimony last month. The firm amended its required federal lobbying disclosures after an extensive review of Hart’s emails, calendar entries and other materials.

Hart was forced to retire early as a result of the scandal that erupted following public disclosure of the EPA chief’s unusual living arrangements. Pruitt has denied wrongdoing, describing Hart as a personal friend from his home state of Oklahoma.

In a statement, Williams & Jensen said Hart had failed to fully disclose his lobbying activities to his own firm, resulting in prior reports omitting information. Federal law requires lobbyists to file quarterly reports detailing their contacts with government officials, including the clients they were representing, what topics were discussed and how much they were paid.

“Following press reports of a former member of our firm engaging in lobbying activity that had not been disclosed, we engaged outside counsel to conduct a review of relevant filings,” the firm’s statement said. “Following the completion of that review and the advice of counsel, today the firm filed amendments to several disclosure reports that include information that was not previously disclosed to our firm and therefore not included in the original filings.”

Both Pruitt and Hart have publicly denied the lobbyist had conducted any business with EPA in 2017. At a May 16 hearing before a Senate appropriations subcommittee, the embattled EPA chief erroneously insisted that Hart had not lobbied the government last year.

“Steve Hart is someone that was not registered as a lobbyist in 2017,” Pruitt testified. “He’s a longtime associate and friend.”

Records showed that Hart was in fact a registered lobbyist in 2017, though at the time it had not yet been formally disclosed that he directly lobbied Pruitt’s agency. Federal law makes it a crime to “knowingly and willfully” give materially false statements to Congress.

EPA spokesman Jahan Wilcox did not respond to requests for comment Friday night about whether Pruitt still stood by his testimony.

A spokesman for Hart did not respond to phone or email Friday.

Pruitt’s connections to Hart have been under intense scrutiny since March, when media reports first revealed that the EPA chief had rented a luxury Capitol Hill condo from a corporation co-owned by Hart’s wife for just $50 a night. Pruitt’s daughter, then a White House summer intern, stayed in a second bedroom at the condo at no additional cost.

On Pruitt’s 2017 condo lease, a copy of which was reviewed by The Associated Press, Steven Hart’s name was originally typed in as “landlord” but was scratched out. The name of his wife, health care lobbyist Vicki Hart, was scribbled in.

The AP and other media outlets reported in April that Pruitt had met in his office last year with Hart on behalf of the philanthropic arm of Smithfield Foods to discuss efforts to preserve the Chesapeake Bay. The world’s largest pork producer, Smithfield has been involved with efforts to clean up the bay since EPA fined the company $12.6 million in 1997 for illegally dumping hog waste into a tributary.

The amended disclosure report filed Friday by Williams & Jensen acknowledges the meeting between Hart and Pruitt constituted lobbying, as did additional communications by the lobbyist with Pruitt’s staff to recommend potential candidates for a science advisory board and other positions appointed by the EPA administrator.

A spokeswoman for Smithfield did not respond to a request for comment Friday.

The new disclosure report says Hart also lobbied EPA in 2017 on behalf of the Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico about water quality and infrastructure in the wake of Hurricane Maria. A spokesman for the oversight board did not immediately respond Friday to an email seeking comment.

The firm also disclosed for the first time that Hart had contact with EPA on behalf of Coca-Cola. According to the reports, Hart lobbied the agency about clean water supplies, water conservation and “environmental issues impacting the beverage industry, including hydrofluorocarbon replacement.”

Hydrofluorocarbons are potent greenhouse gases commonly used for refrigeration. Under the Obama administration, EPA had sought to phase out the use of hydrofluorocarbons because they contribute to global warming, but the effort was stymied after industries challenged the proposed ban in court.

In a statement issued Friday, Coca-Cola said the company has severed ties with Williams & Jensen.

“The Coca-Cola Company is committed to the highest level of integrity in all aspects of our business, and we expect our lobbying firms to uphold that same commitment,” the statement said.

Disgraced White House physician Ronny ‘Candyman’ Jackson will be investigated in Pentagon probe

The U.S. Defense Department’s inspector general has opened an investigation into misconduct allegations against White House physician Ronny Jackson, the inspector general’s office said in a statement on Monday.

President Donald Trump nominated Jackson to be veterans affairs secretary in March, but Jackson withdrew from consideration a month later amid allegations he had overseen a hostile work environment as White House physician, drank on the job and allowed the overprescribing of drugs.

Jackson, a U.S. Navy rear admiral, has denied the allegations.
“The DoD Office of Inspector General has initiated an investigation into allegations related to Rear Admiral (Lower Half) Ronny L. Jackson,” Bruce Anderson, spokesman for the inspector general’s office, said in a statement.

Democrats on the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee have said more than 20 current and former colleagues had come forward to accuse Jackson of prescribing himself medications, getting drunk at a Secret Service party and wrecking a government vehicle.

Jackson has worked as a presidential physician since 2006. After withdrawing his nomination for the VA post, Jackson stopped serving as Trump’s lead physician.

Scandal-Plagued EPA Chief Scott Pruitt Reportedly Tried to Use Clout to Get His Wife a Job At Chick-fil-A

According to The Washington Post, emails recently released under a Freedom of Information Act request filed by the Sierra Club reveal that embattled EPA Chief Scott Pruitt has even more skeletons in his closet than those which have provoked over a dozen federal probes.

Three months after Pruitt became head of the EPA, he had his executive scheduler email the chairman and president of Chick-fil-A about “a potential business opportunity.”

That opportunity? A job for his wife, Marlyn Pruitt.

“The subject of that phone call was an expression of interest in his wife becoming a Chick-fil-A franchisee,” company representative Carrie Kurlander told The Washington Post via email.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, current and former EPA aides told the Post that Pruitt was concerned about his personal expenses and wanted his wife to help support them. Part of his worries revolved around the cost of maintaining two expensive homes: one in D.C. and one in Oklahoma.

“Administrator Pruitt’s wife started, but did not complete, the Chick-fil-A franchisee application,” Kurlander added. Pruitt’s wife did not end up working for the company.

The chief executive of New York-based nonprofit organization Concordia, Matthew Swift, also revealed that Pruitt approached him on his wife’s behalf. He ended up paying her $2000 plus travel last September to help organize the organization’s annual conference.

“Federal ethics laws bar public officials from using their position or staff for private gain. A Cabinet-level official using his perch to contact a company CEO about a job for his wife “raises the specter of misuse of public office,” Don Fox, former head of the federal Office of Government Ethics during the Obama administration, told the Post. “It’s not much different [from] if he [had] asked the aide to facilitate getting a franchise for himself.”
