Are you aware that the Trump tariffs are just a way to level the playing field with countries that ALREADY have high tariffs and trade barriers that negatively affect US companies?

    Free-Trade is a Two-Way Street

As the nearby chart shows, China’s tariffs are higher than those of the U.S. in 20 of the 22 major categories of goods. Europe imposes higher tariffs than the U.S. in 17 of 22 categories, though the chart does show that the EU and China are much different regarding tariff rates.

The EU charges a 10% tariff on imported American cars, while the U.S. imposes only a 2.5% tariff on imported European cars. Today Europe exports 1.14 million automobiles to the U.S., nearly four times as many as the U.S. exports to Europe. China, which is the world’s largest automobile market, has a 25% tariff on imported vehicles and imposes even higher tariffs on luxury vehicles.

In addition to tariffs, both China and Europe enforce formidable nontariff trade barriers against imports. Examples include onerous and opaque procedures for registering and gaining certification for imports; unscientific sanitary rules, especially with regard to agricultural goods; requirements that companies build local factories; and forced technology transfers. The list goes on.

Both China and Europe also bankroll their exports through grants, low-cost loans, energy subsidies, special value-added tax refunds, and below-market real-estate sales and leases, among other means. Comparable levels of government support do not exist in the U.S. If these countries really are free traders, why do they have such formidable tariff and nontariff barriers?
    ...

The Trump administration believes in free and fair trade and will use every available tool to counter the protectionism of those who pledge allegiance to free trade while violating its core principles. The U.S. is working to restore a level playing field, and under President Trump’s leadership, we will do so.

This is a true free-trade agenda.

Riiight. That's why the US has fewer (and less costly) tariffs and trade barriers than the EU and China. Cuz WE haven't evolved.

Trump pulled out of the TPP because multilateral trade agreements force governments to give up too many rights. A perfect example is the Energy Charter Treaty, which could end up costing German billions of Euros simply for deciding they wanted to phase out nuclear power plants after the Fukushima disaster.

    https://www.tni.org/files/download/vattenfall-icsid-case_oct2013.pdf

Trump's policy is to negotiate one-on-one bi-lateral trade agreements.

And yes, the TPP has that same shitty investor protection policy.

US. trade negotiators in the past have been rubes, suckers, weak and unsophisticated bureaucrats, people that knew nothing of business.
They came to the table with the deepest pockets and holding the best hand and still got taken to the cleaners.
That's what the current administration wishes their constituents to believe and it appears many do.
So far Trump looks pretty good at demolition, We'll have to see just how successful he is at construction.
Trump hosted the leader of China at Mar a lago and they had the best chocolate cake ever.
He then has the opportunity to meet with the leaders of the other G7 nations and what does he do?
He shows up late, spouts a bunch of platitudes leaves early, takes his ball, goes home and Tweets.
    That's how you do business.

You are clearly observing how President Trump operates. To the uninitiated President Trump acts foolishly, the rest of us know the deals actually benefit everybody. In his eight years in office, he will accomplish more great things for the world than any other statesman in recent history.

An accomplished businessman knows how to make an entrance...and knows when to leave.

Especially whan there is more on the table than just pussified countries pissed because the U.S. has the balls to do some real re-negotiating.

Not to mention he has a meeting with Lil' Kim, seems to be a bit more important than re-negotiating trade deals.

    More bullshit...

    https://www.census.gov/foreign-trade/balance/c1220.html

The U.S. has been running a trade deficit with Canada since '85.

Number two: Canada has lower average tariffs than the United States.

Tariffs or taxes on imports are designed to protect Canadian industries from foreign competition. But some of these industries are long gone. For example, while Montreal manufacturer Gildan now makes its cotton T-shirts in Honduras, Nicaragua and in the Dominican Republic, imported cotton T-shirts are still hit with an insane 18-per-cent tariff.

After an internal study on a sample of 15,700 products, Canadian Tire Corp. Ltd. found out that four out of five of the goods subject to duty that it imports face a higher tariff in Canada than in the United States. This difference translated into $8.4-million in extra costs in 2011 – costs that are amplified with sales taxes once the retailer passes them on to consumers.

And number three, American steel companies and steelworkers oppose these tariffs on Canadian steel.

American steel: The 25% tariff on steel has bolstered the economic case for using locally made steel. Moody's Investors Service on Thursday raised its outlook for the U.S. steel industry from stable to positive, in part due to the tariff decision.

"Imports remained high through April in advance of tariff implementation, but should subside once the tariff goes into effect," Moody's said.

American aluminum: The Alliance for American Manufacturing said domestic aluminum is already benefiting from the Trump plan.

It "means more jobs and added capacity," the Alliance said.

Companies like U.S.-based Century Aluminum may be poised to capitalize. Its stock closed 3.3% higher.

Foreign companies that serve foreign markets in the affected areas: Any foreign company that competes with American manufacturers in international markets may benefit. Why? Their business would get a boost if it is targeted primarily at European customers or other countries that retaliate against the U.S.

since we are one of top dairy producers ,
put tariffs on steel to protect our dairy industry.
    and sausage makers
    Quick.

(and warn Fontarra to watch out for sneaky steel deals)

    new business venture :

You can sure see the hypocricy glaring like the sun on this thread by member who once claimed the US lost steel jobs because of greedy unions or screamed up and down that the federal fucking government has no business interfering in the economy or trying to pick economic winners and losers and here they are cheering on Trump's tariffs.

Once again the lie of conservatism as it is preached and practiced in this nation and the liars who preach it are on glaring display.

And once again, another ''wanna be constitutionalist/conservative''

If one knew anything about our form of federal fucking government, one would know that the purpose of the federal fucking government is to provide for ''common defense''.....national security in today's terms.

    Pay the debts..

Regulate and oversee the commerce between the States and trade with other Nations..

And a few select other reasons for the creation of a federal fucking government.

As none of those reason were to select a few businesses by giving them welfare created by tax revenues.

Now, this nation has a POTUS that recognizes the sole purpose of the federal fucking government along with recognizing that the U.S has fostered some bad deals in the past, and the current POTUS... wants to fix the bullshit.

Suck it up butter cup, because your world is fixing to get much worse over the next 2+ years with the current POTUS.

You may need to put on a pair of those Eclipse Glasses to be able to look at this glaring hypocrisy

Totally false, the real reason we have 10% unemployment is because we are in a recession of epic proportions.

When did I say that Ford did not benefit by adopting Demings model, they finally had the support of the UAW to do it.

Not true, the political make up of bailed out companies is more Democrats than Republicans. Conservatives did not agree to the bailouts, don't ou ever pay attention?
Show me where I have screamed that. Bet you can't. To the contrary, I have advocated reasonable taxes with reasonable regulation.

Sorry, you're looking in the mirror again.

Whoa, Windsor/Detroit and Ft Erie/Buffalo are the top two border crossings, who doesn’t know geography?

Didn't see the link, but when I looked it was from 2002. According to Forbes and most other sources the two busiest US/Canada crossing points are: Buffalo/Ft Erie and Detroit/Windsor. Your list shows essentially the same thing, Buffalo (including Lewiston and Niagara Falls) and Detroit. So what is your point.

Feel free to like her next answer, stumbles

I don’t live in Mexico. I don’t combine Niagara Falls/Queenston-Lewiston with Fort Erie Buffalo, but won’t argue the point because it doesn’t make a difference. My point still stands as far as the statistics go; you can’t parse out how many Canadians are living and working in the US vs living in Canada and working in the US. Unfortunately.

And anyone is free to like my comments, if they wish. You can go ahead if you’d like; I don’t bite. :)

My replies come when I have time to make them.
