Hi guys and gals, I'm Jon nice to meet you all.
I have read the comments on this thread and can see that there are some genuinely really nice people on this site and I know there may be some not so nice but hey, that's life. A lot of the comments made me laugh with you, a lot made me sit up and take note of no doubt well experienced authors. Some even brought me close to tears(I'm a guy who wears his heart on his sleeve and cried at my wedding much to the laughter and tears of my loved ones).
I am under no illusions that my stories will be anywhere good enough to be classed in some of your leagues as I did not have the greatest of educations but I now feel confident enough to at least try.
I posted my first story yesterday and was dreading being told 'your crap'

Thanks @Shady Lady Julie though you just went right over my head, a link to what? A signature? I'm new and didn't have a clue what that meant. I'm still trying to figure out how to use things, deleted one of my two stories when I realized it had duplicated(I've only written one so far)

Go to home in forum and click on your name in top right (this brings up your personal details) > Scroll down left hand side until you find 'signature' > In the box write some narrative e.g. I enjoy writing stories > at this point if you just want a message you can save & exit, if you want to hyperlink keep going.

Make the text some like 'my stories can be found on this page' > highlight the whole of the text > click on the little thing that looks like a paper clip (link) > in pop up box paste the URL of your page in stories (for you it's https://www.sexstories.com/profile1403585/Justjon76) > click insert > save and exit and it should work. It will be a permalink so as your stories increase people will be directed to your page.

What you should end up with is My stories can be found on this page

PS a little tip - watch your titling especially if you are writing a series to make sure things fall neatly, trust me its a right pain if you have to retitle.

PPS Have you set your story to publish rather than just edit as it doesn't appear.

It's very odd how personal things can sometimes get here. Conceptually, you'd think the idea of a haven of free online erotica that's essentially community-founded and community-oriented would flourish as opposed to being as cutthroat as it is, but perhaps that's just my inner leftist talking.

Segue: do you like the idea of making friends through erotica sites, or do you try to be as detached as possible from the people for personal reasons? I know some who are embarrassed that they write erotica, or are worried people are going to find their personal identities out or something. Me, I enjoy making the online acquaintances like you all here. It helps me understand that we all have goals and feelings and all that.

 

@BashfulScribe, The 'idea' of making friends through a common cause (such as erotica writing) is appealing to many. Yet, outside things that have shaped one's life often give pause to allowing others a glimpse behind the veil of their lives. I live in the deep South (Tampa Bay, Florida). The 'Bible belt' still has a strong, almost choking grip on many that live below the 'Mason-Dixon' line. However, there are obstacles or even demons that one has to deal with to be comfortable doing whatever it is that they find enjoyable. I certainly enjoy things such as non-personal debating, talking about cooking, chatting about the horrible laws that don't protect our children from violence....and on and on. I can rail with the best of them and an online forum such as this one certainly provides that opportunity without disclosing information that one may not be comfortable revealing. As you do, I enjoy the friendships that I have made here. IF I had the ability to change just one item it would be to remove the percentage of 'likes' your story receives. Rather than continuing to just enjoy new authors, the percentage vote makes it so competitive that some post, re-post, and re-post again trying to keep their stories on the front page. But, hey this is just an opinion.

 

That's entirely fair. I see the stories as one entity and the community as another entirely. It's like we're at a house party - the main purpose of the house party is to go into the living room and do the main thing (like read/write erotica in this case) but you can also go into quieter rooms like the kitchen and talk with people at the party. And wow, this guy you're suddenly talking to is really cool. Oh, he wrote the 'weird' story you read earlier? Enh, fuck it, still cool. The one thing I find cool about this forum is that I'm pretty sure I like everyone here. Everyone's stories? That's... debatable. I'm very harsh on most stories, including my own. But I kind of like hanging out in the kitchen at this party. The living room might have a bit of a toxic environment, but overall, I think I like this party.

 

Thank you to Shady Lady Julie for posting directions on creating a signature. I'm new to this site and I have one story posted and one in the works and many ideas to explore. I like this site better than the other more mainstream site that has more restrictions on content. I am so amazed at the number of people who read and write their sexual fantasies. I am fascinated to be a part of this wave of sexual revolution that is happening. I have no idea what to expect. I have put a lot of effort in editing my story and getting it ready for publication. When I think about my story floating around in the sea of stories, it doesn't seem as nasty as I originally thought. There are far more devious minds out there! LOL But, I think I have written with an element of realism that adds a tinge of something. Not sure what word to use there. I think my story builds the tension between the characters and I think I have created a believable situation for the events to transpire. I also wrote the story from several perspectives, making it easy for the reader to relate to either character. It is my first story, so I'm sure there are many things I should be considering for my next story that I just haven't thought of yet. Anyway, I am posting here in the hopes of having other experienced authors read it.

 

@IndelicatedDoll, Welcome to this writing group. If I may offer a couple of gentle suggestions. First, when you publish your stories set the preference to "allow only comments with registered" that way you don't get these unknown users criticizing your work, stuff they couldn't do if it was as simple as a nursery rhyme. BashfulScribe is a wonderful person who will critique your work but he is trying to emphasize how to improve something, not just tear it down.
I urge you to read other author's work....some of my favorites are: Mystic47, Lubrican, Shady Lady Julie, Dbuck, Melanieatplay, SquattingEagle, Professor_Chaos, Tina_Kerr_36, and Loretta Roberson. These are just a few of the amazing authors on this site. You will probably see some authors who write with different themes, some you may enjoy, some maybe not. However, I urge you to go outside of your comfort zone. Don't be worried about the topic (such as beastiality, which doesn't do anything for me) what I look at is HOW they write, different perspectives, how they mark time passage, punctuation, how long paragraphs are, more story versus more sex. Again, I hope you enjoy things here. Feel free to ask me anything anytime. I check into here several times a day.

I’m slowly posting my existing stories and using the opportunity to do some rewriting.
Here’s a question though.
How difficult is it to edit and or update stories posted to the Sexstories side?

 

Once you make your story 'ready for publication' it will appear under the tab, your stories. On the right hand side it will list your stories, how many reads it has had, any comments and the such. On the right hand side will be three links....view/edit/delete....click on view and you will see it as everyone else sees it. When you click on edit you can make any and all changes to your story, once you make your changes you need to 'make it ready to publish'. Now, please remember, this is a worldwide site. Usually monday and tuesday they are working hard trying to publish all the stories that were set from mid Friday until late Sunday night. It may take up to 36-48 hours beginning on Monday morning until you see the edited story published. Hope this helps.

I would have assumed that to be the edit tool but above it seems to indicate that there is an email format to go through and that put me off of the obvious and caused me to have doubts about that easy obvious process.
Have no fear about me becoming anxious for the update to appear.

Next question, it looks as if to publish to forum side I should just cut and paste into the thread.

I have been reading the thread and it seems that there is some controversy about hierarchy and some sort of pushing and shoving to keep ones story on the first page as it were.

Since there does not seem to be any commenting , even with thousands of downloads, it is rather like casting your words to the wind.
While that is ok as far as it goes and does accomplish the single goal of sharing your work, it does nothing to give feedback. Add to that that negative marks might have wrong motivations one can hardly have any idea about how ones work is being received.
Personally I do not require ego strokes and my primary motivation is simply to share my work but some feedback would not go amiss.

Then let me suggest Wrist.xxx It is a website for writers only. No porn videos, no trolls voting down your work. The authors are really good, many of whom come from xnxx. The nice thing over there is everyone is so helpful, need a proofreader there's several there willing to help.
They also have writing competitions. The CAW, the KAW, and the CAWss. The first two are big competitions voted on by other authors but only the administration knows the authors as they are posted annomyously. The third competition is the CAWss. It is a monthly competition. Short stories, 1000 words maximum. The winner of a monthly competition gets to pick the following months theme. Also, when you win the monthly competition you are not allowed to enter the following month, thus allowing everyone a fair chance at winning......I really enjoy the site. Hopefully you'll check it out and find it as nice as I have.
