Howdy all, Mojavejoe420 here. But, for reasons I can’t explain, everyone calls me Jim.

I’ve been writing here off and on for several years. BS (Bashful Scribe) was one of the few people I ever spoke to here. He and another person, Melanieatplay, were very instrumental with me becoming a better writer. My first story ever, the My Sister and Her Friends series, was pretty much a train wreck. The story was pretty good, but the writing itself was a disaster. I like to think I have improved! Although raw as they were, my early stories seem to have a more ‘fun’ element to them than my more recent stories and I’m trying to get back to that.

I’m kind of a romantic, I think, and I love “love”. So even my harshest stories have romantic elements in them.

My latest story, a venture into the beastie world, was quite a stretch for me and I was a little hesitant to put my name on it, but wtf, ya know?

I have downvoted maybe... ten stories? Ever? For about six months I was a story approver here and I would have to check through some thoroughly vile stories. The most heinous ones i would try and downvote early so as to spare others accidentally seeing them! But other than that, if I don’t like a story I just move on. I don’t see why people have to Zero a story just because they don’t like the subject. If you don’t like the subject, then move along and let that genre’s fans decide if it’s good or not.

I do seem to notice fewer comments in general as of late. I’m guilty of that myself, sadly. I don’t read as much as I should but am trying to carve out more time for that.

To be honest, there is nothing wrong in down-voting a story. If a story is actual garbage then vote it accordingly. My issue is the down-voting without an explanation. Give your thoughts on why it was not a good read and ways for the author to better him or herself. Constructive criticism is for betterment of the author.

Yes, there are trolls in the community that down-vote just to down-vote for whatever reason, but if the story is exceptional then the CREAM ALWAYS RISES TO THE TOP.

 

Bashful I read your social story over all ok, had some mistakes in it in my opinion not in the misspelling and such. But, in the story itself. And some of the chars I hope you write more stories, you have real talent.

 

I think it is a mistake to assume that because a story may have a negative vote, that it is because of the quality of the writing. I have some negative votes and I think it might be due to the fact that someone may have felt disappointed with the subject not being what they may have expected. Of course, my negatives could not be because of poor quality.
But, seriously, I agree with throatHER. I wish people would leave an explanation of why they didn't like it. At least then it might spark some conversation.

 

Thanks. I read your story a while back and it was well executed and believable. Those are the type of stories I am into no matter the genre, besides bestiality.

Too many good authors are so over the top with their sex scenes it detracts from their story.

 

I've been on this site a few years as well, mostly wandering around the stories, and I've run across some that fascinate me, drama-wise... one of my personal favorite types is the drama of the idea of basically a woman having stolen a guy's wife and family, via the courts... as a touch of the drama that'd result.

 

How often does this happen? Genuinely curious

@CallingAllBullshit says the person who just downvoted one of my stories and 4 of @PABLO DIABLO stories because they were sitting at a 100% forcing my story down to 80% which will never be read again. It is TROLLs like you that make me want to pull all of my stories from this site...

I wrote a blog post about this a while back. Whenever people mass downvote stories or something, people don’t like to blame the community at large. If people do that, they have to look one another in the metaphorical eye and accuse each other, and cause conflict between peaceful people on a mass scale. Website communities don’t really like that. So what do they do? They find the Bogeyman, the one person who ‘downvoted everything’ despite the site literally capping off at 10 votes a day.

My guess is @CallingAllBullshit is the alternate account of a frustrated writer who has their stories downvoted to hell in the past, and has convinced themselves that it's not random people who enjoy making others feel bad, but that 'it has to be the most popular writers here, it's a conspiracy.' I get that makes them hypocritical, but that also makes them human. If I spent a long amount of time writing stories and they got downvoted to hell immediately with me powerless to do anything about it, I'd be upset too. Hell, I have been. And it's a vicious cycle - if CallingAllBullshit started posting stories tomorrow, would any of you be tempted to downvote their stories out of spite? We say 'no,' but I think a few of the people here might be tempted.

I hold no ill will towards CallingAllBullshit, but I will say if you're reading this that if you are frustrated by mass downvoting, then not only are you contributing to the problem by downvoting who you think is behind it with no proof, you're also encouraging others to mass downvote too. You're defeating your own cause. Please consider stopping that. Also, if you (CallingAllBullshit) are in fact the alt account of someone who has had their stories downvoted, message me privately. I'd love to read and support your work.

 

I think the problem is when you have voting EXCLUSIVELY for registered voters only.

I've said this before and I will say it again, but a little differently. The mass majority of readers on this site are unregistered. Not allowing them a voice to give them an opinion is, in my eyes cheating!

A person has a story read 28,000 times but has 28 votes positive and 0 negative because only registered voters are allowed. That's someone trying to bypass the system.

Not everyone is going to like a story that has been submitted.

I believe all my stories should be 95% or above, especially with some of the crap I read on here, but not everyone likes my subject matter or writing style.

Shit, I've said this a million times, Game of Inches is by far the greatest series I've ever read in this site and people downgraded that story. So no story is above reproach.

At the end of the day if your story is quality it will receive far more positive views than negative.

That's my rant for the day.

Also, thanks Bashful for the response on my question. It was Facebook that I put in my story and I edited it out.

@PABLO DIABLO I have read your first 9 or 10 chapters of the Chaffeur series both commenting and rating them. You have a terrific pen. The same for @DBuck as well. The Rocker series is very well written.

My point is that people are going to downgrade everyone's stories for whatever reason, but you put an extra target on your back when you allow only registered voters to decide your fate. Fake accounts will turn up and REALLY shit on a story if the people feel they are excluded from their voice being heard. Shit, @BashfulScribe is as good a writer as anyone and even his stories get negative reviews, but still rated very highly.

There does not seem to be an easy solution to the downvoting. Allowing any one to vote does allow for more to actually have a chance to. But that can also give the downvoters the same opportunity. Requiring someone to register to vote, will eliminate many as many don't wish to give up anonymity for various reasons. I chose to register and still can not access the stories to do anything, other than read. How many others have that issue? A few maybe more. It is frustrating to say the least.

It does seem that the rating of a story is only based on the positive or negative vote system. Perhaps they should somehow tie the views in as well, since one must view the story in order to rate it.. This may help to balance the numbers some. How much help it would offer would be based on how they incorporated it. This is on the site to do, unfortunately, if it is even possible. Any solution that comes up will have problems.

Perhaps to much emphasis is placed on the rating. I understand that having a top story is showing that your work is appreciated as well as enjoyed. I have dabbled in writing myself, stopping for a few reasons. It was disconcerting to see the numbers drop. Perhaps it was some downvoting involved but overall I can't say. What I took is that it was my fault as the writer. If the story was good enough then there would be more willing to hit a positive and thus countering the negatives. But I learned to read the comments and see the number of views. Taking it all into thought made it better, for me at least.

My writing career is done. But there are many out there that are still trying. If attention to the story would help perhaps a thread somewhere, if not already done, could allow them to promote their stories or series. With the numbers of writers posting the thread would nearly always be at the forefront. It would be a little effort but could offer some new readers and new votes. Just an idea, or part of one.

I inherently think allowing everyone to vote is a bad idea if you can't stand the heat. The whole concept of being anonymous is prone to allow bots, trolls and abuse. The way I would personally fix the voting system is:

• Allow everyone to view a story
• Allow only registered users to vote (the friction of creating an account is really low, cmon)
• If a user wants to downvote a story, he/she needs to give a motivation
• Top story's would be calculated by a mix of positive/negative vote ratio, registered views and unregistered views, which would have less value

Obviously registered accounts might still abuse the system, but surely, there are ways around that...

To keep this relevant to the thread: How do you guys make sure your stories are grammatically correct? Do you proofread it yourselves or use a service/word?
