One of the things that made this one different is the shooter used silencers on his guns. Which is why no one heard the shots in the parking lot which normally would have tipped law enforcement off. And then once inside people mistakenly thought they were safe because it sounded like the shots were far off.

 

At least 7 people hospitalized after shooting at festival

GILROY, Calif. (AP) — At least seven people were hospitalized Sunday after a shooting at an annual food festival in Northern California, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Stanford Medical Center has two patients being treated from the shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival, spokeswoman Julie Greicius said. She had no details on their injuries or conditions. Santa Clara Valley Medical Center received five victims, spokeswoman Joy Alexiou said. She also had no information on their conditions.

Witnesses to the shooting about 5:30 p.m. described the confusion and panic at the scene, the Mercury News reported.

Evenny Reyes of Gilroy, 13, told the newspaper that spent the day at the festival with her friends and relatives.

"We were just leaving and we saw a guy with a bandana wrapped around his leg because he got shot. And there were people on the ground, crying," Reyes said. "There was a little kid hurt on the ground. People were throwing tables and cutting fences to get out."

Reyes said that she didn't run at first because the gunshots sounded like fireworks. "It started going for five minutes, maybe three. It was like the movies — everyone was crying, people were screaming."

Todd Jones, a sound engineer, told the newspaper that he was at the front of the festival's Vineyard stage when he heard what sounded like a firework. "But then it started to increase, more rapidly, which sounded more like gunfire, and at that point people realized what was happening," Jones said.

Natalie Martinez, a Gilroy Resident, told the Mercury News that she had gone to get food and separated from her two daughters. "I ran to find the girls . and we basically ran into each other. I thought, We're open prey. It was awful."

Agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are responding to the scene of the shooting.

Gilroy is a city of roughly 50,000 located about 80 miles (176 kilometers) southeast of San Francisco. It's dubbed the "Garlic Capital of the World," and the annual garlic festival is a three-day celebration featuring food, cooking competitions and music that attracts more than 100,000 people. Sunday was the final day of this year's event.

The Gilroy Police Department on its Twitter account issued a statement saying: "The hearts of Gilroy PD and entire community go out to the victims of today's shooting at the Garlic Festival. The scene is still active. If you are looking for a loved one, please go to the reunification center at Gavilan College at parking lot B."

Reports say 4 dead, 15 or more injured. Reports said among the dead are one of the useless fucktard asshole shooters and a 6 year old child. One shooter when asked why he was doing this answered "because I' really angry" according to a witness.

I do not read about this sort of thing happening in Europe, or in in the Far East. The third world, and particularly Africa, is a hopeless mess. You're probably right. Because there's always those who will oppose any gun restrictions that will actually work. So we end up with watered down laws that are easily broken but they can say they did something when in reality, nothing was accomplished. The only real way is to curtail many of these mass shootings is completely outlaw gun ownership and that will never fly.

The rise in crime in England and Wales is accelerating, according to police figures, which show a 14% year-on-year increase in offences recorded by forces across England and Wales.

Knife crime has gone up even more steeply, by 21% in the 12 months to September, and gun crime has risen by 20%, according to quarterly figures released on Thursday.

Police chiefs said the increases – including a 32% rise in domestic burglary to 261,965 offences and an 18% rise in vehicle-related crimes (443,577 offences) alongside the sharp rises in violent crime – marked a turning point after more than 20 years of sustained falls in these categories.

“Today’s police officers are dealing with more complex crime, more safeguarding and protecting vulnerable people and an unprecedented terror threat, as well as tackling some of the genuine rises in knife and gun crime, robbery, burglary and vehicle-related crime – crimes which turn the trend on many years of reductions,” said chief constable Bill Skelly, of the National Police Chiefs’ Council.

Gun Violence on the Rise in Scandinavian Utopia of Sweden

During the 2016 Democratic primary, socialist candidate Bernie Sanders touted Scandinavian countries like Sweden as a model for how the United States’ economy should be run. “Democratic Socialism” was a scheme latched on to by lots of Bernie-bros who only vaguely understood it as their healthcare and education being paid for by someone else.

Using Sweden as a model continues to be an extremely bad idea, not only economically but in terms of immigration as well. But what may really stun the Scandinavian Utopianists is Sweden’s rising gun violence problem.

A recent article in The Economist asks “Why are young men in Sweden shooting each other?“ The obvious answer is that they want to kill each other. From that we can deduce that they are criminals and bad people. (The Economist would never stoop to acknowledging these simple and correct answers though.)

Gangs are nothing new: bikers and Balkan mafiosi have traded drugs and occasional bullets in Sweden since the early 1990s. But the gangs emerging today are less organised and more prone to commit petty crime. Acquiring a legal gun requires strict screening, but Kalashnikovs from the Yugoslav wars are readily available on the black market. To sweeten the deal, smugglers often throw in hand grenades (there were 43 grenade incidents in Sweden last year). The victims and perpetrators of gang violence are nearly always young men.

How to explain the rise of gang violence? It cannot be the economy, which is doing well, or Sweden’s quality of life, which is among the best in the world. And crime in general is in decline. So what has gone wrong?

When someone writes that a country has the “best quality of life” it usually means that that country has the exact policies for which the writer advocates. It’s not an objective measure by any stretch of the imagination. As Americans, we recognize—at least some of us do—that quality of life has much more to do with one’s individual liberty than it does with the government providing for all our needs.





Obviously, a country which had 43 grenade incidents last year has some serious quality of life issues. Keep in mind that Sweden’s population is roughly the same as New York City’s. If there were 43 grenade attacks in New York City last year, it probably wouldn’t be mentioned adjacent to a paragraph praising the city’s soaring quality of life.

Some blame the refugee crisis of 2015, when Sweden took in the most asylum-seekers per capita in Europe.

Shootings with illegal guns is a concept American gun control fanatics haven’t really grasped yet. For them, a shooting with an illegal gun just means a push to make more guns illegal.

Sweden accepted lots of asylum-seekers in the 1980s and 1990s from countries like Iraq, Somalia and the former Yugoslavia.

Sweden built them homes and taught them its language, but it failed to integrate them into the labour market. The Swedish welfare system offers good education and generous benefits. But for immigrants there is little social mobility. Powerful unions insist on high wages for entry-level jobs, so firms often find it uneconomical to hire immigrants with limited education or not much Swedish. Today, 16% of people born abroad are unemployed—one of the highest rates in the OECD. Gangs offer frustrated young men an alternative. “They let you feel like a king, even if for one day,” says Mr Rostami.

Sweden has essentially been the open borders social welfare state advocated by many on the American left and unsurprisingly it’s not working. Immigrants and refugees are not assimilating and are either becoming burdens on the welfare system or the criminal justice system. Sounds familiar.

Alarmed, the government has provided additional funding for integrating migrants, imposed harsher punishments for gun crimes and granted a weapons amnesty. Police have stepped up surveillance and co-operation with other European countries to curb weapons-smuggling. In January the Swedish government set up a centre to combat violent extremism.

“Violent extremism” of course means Islamic terrorism. No amount of funding will cause people to integrate if they don’t want to integrate. Many of these people want to plant the flag of their culture, not adopt a new one. There are no more melting pots when it comes to immigration.

Still, witnesses are scared to talk and the police are stretched. Not one firearm-homicide case in Stockholm was solved in 2016. The government hopes to turn that around: police wages have been bumped up, and officers who left during a reorganisation three years ago (which coincided with a rise in crime) have been re-hired. Preliminary results for 2017 show that the clear-up rate for firearm murders has risen to a (still woeful) 30% in Stockholm. But over 100 cases remain unsolved.

It seems unlikely that the police have such a woeful record of solving murders because they aren’t being paid enough. The Social Democrat answer to every problem is throwing money at it. It seldom works.

It doesn’t work in Sweden and it won’t work here.

No matter what Bernie tells you, we should avoid emulating Sweden like the plague

The (Tory) home secretary, Amber Rudd, acknowledged the rise in police recorded crime but said much of the increase could be explained by changes in police recording practices and a greater willingness of victims to come forward.

“So far we have seen that crimes measured by the survey – the best measure of crime as it reflects the public’s experience of crime – has fallen since 2010, but we have also seen a rise in police recorded crime over the past few years,” she said.

“The Office for National Statistics is clear that much of it can be explained by significant improvements in police recording practices and more victims having the confidence to come forward, particularly in cases of sexual violence and domestic abuse: both things that I welcome.”

And its not even the murder rate. The thing that really sets the US apart is our mass shootings. We have them on about a weekly basis and one thing that is very common is a lot of times they cannot even figure out why? What the real motivation was?

Just like the one in California last night. According to eyewitness accounts one of the potential victims actually screamed at the shooter "Why are you doing this"? And he reportedly responded with "I am really angry." But angry about what exactly we may never know.

I think that is actually a combination of our gun culture and a steady stream of pushing hate and fear and discontent for political and ideological purposes. We both create and arm our own monsters. Like its a fucking fad or something.

 

I choose to keep myself armed at all times. Just in case. I've been held up at gunpoint 3 times, and it's not gonna happen a 4th.
