I would never be so vain as to think that anyone would use one of my stories as a jumping off point. However, if someone wanted to, I give advanced permission to do so without contacting me. I'd rather be surprised!

 

When seeing this I initially thought "ah, easy peasy, I have already been working on a sequel/continuation of my "Of Half-Breed Prey" story as I edit it....Yet I feel that would just be wrong/unfair on my part regarding effort. More than that, the original 20k word story already since CAW-26 already has grown into three additional continuations totaling roughly 70-80k words (too much for a CAW submission? hehe).

In any case, I do have an idea for something I'd like to do, yet it will require finding a story that involves "____ ______" with a solidly formed lead character....So we'll see.

Don't sell yourself short, cowboy. You have a few stories on here that cry for a sequel.

Links to most of my stuff are in my sig. If anyone is crazy enough to want to do a companion piece/continuation/whatever of one of my stories, I'd be honored, but I think I'd have real trouble waiting to find out about it.

It seems to me contacting the writer of the original story would be the polite thing to do. Who knows? Someone may feel protective of their work or be in the process of expanding the "target" story themselves. Getting permission fosters communication, something sorely lacking around this place. The original Calling All Writers Challenge concept was to bring writers together. It always does that, but this one gives us a little more opportunity to interact.

The only glitch with getting permission from the original writer is that some people seem to no longer be here. However, their stuff is in the public domain, so I guess it's free pickings.



I'm pretty excited about this one. I have a story kinda picked out with a half-formed idea for a continuation. Two months to write? Maybe I'll look for another.

 

You mentioned a key point -- "solidly formed lead character". That's what we have to find in someone else's work. The real challenge this time will be to use someone else's settings and characters and move them forward. When we find a story we can really feel, one that speaks to us or thoroughly entertains us, it might not be too hard to fantasize onward.

Maybe the hardest part of this whole deal will be finding the perfect story to use as a starting point. I think I have one idea already, but I want to find another as a fallback, second entry, or non-entry.

So, searching....

 

First let me say, if anyone is worried about permission, you have my full permission to use any of my contest stories for this.

Second, I have a question. Does it have to be a CAW story, or can it be a KAW story? There is a lot of beautiful work in both competitions, and what better honor could you give a KAW or CAW participant than to say their story touched you deeply enough to need to continue it.

Third, this is going to make some fantastic reading, especially if the original author is around to comment on the writing. I would seriously love to see if the OA would have taken the story in the same direction.

 

We're limiting it CAW stories. We figure that at some point someone may want to recycle this idea for KAW stories, so, we don't want to infringe upon that.

And I agree with you...I'm hoping for some truly fantastic reading!

 

It will be interesting to see if all those who are able choose to use one of their own stories, or if anyone stretches themselves by using a different work.

Whatever happens this is a novel (no pun intended) idea, and should produce some great entries.

 

Yes! That will be half the fun. I'd love to see what someone might do with one of my stories. There are a lot in the CAW archives by all contributors that COULD have a sequel. If anyone is left alive at the end, the tale can continue, supposedly. And there are always ghost stories....

 

I suspect with two months to kill time that I'll probably write a non-entry. Since it's a non-entry, I might just pick one of mine that I'd like to write about...possibly Glee...running for political office.

 

For what its worth, anyone's welcome to write a sequel on either of my CAW entries. I've already done one.

Glee was one I had in mind. But that's a lot of work.

I have a story worked out but would like to find a partner to inject some new thoughts and spice it up a bit. Also to throw people off the track of who wrote it.

There are an enormous number of stories that you as authors can call upon as source material. If you have a story in mind, cool! If you don't, my suggestion is to pick a favorite CAW author and peruse through their work. Or, contact them via PM and perhaps ask them for a suggestion on what story might make a good one for a sequel. It's sorta' like when one band covers a song written by another. Your first reaction, oh, they could never best the original.

Bob Dylan wrote a song called All Along the Watchtower. It was covered by the Jimi Hendrix Experience and their version appears as #47 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and Total Guitar named it #1 as the greatest cover of all time.

So, yeah, there's always room for improvement and greatness in a sequel.
