I have read over the rules, well, most of them anyway. And I'm not necessarily in full agreement with all of them, so I'll be giving them my own interpretation. Which is cool as that should actually make my story easier to recognize!!!

P.S. That whole anonymous thing is one of the rules I'll be refitting to suit my own personal style.

Any story that is written AND follows ALL of the challenge guidelines will be accepted.

 

I think I have a better idea. Some of the old CAW stories have been lost to time as it were meaning that some of the sequels are going to be to stories that some of our new folk have never had the oppertuninty to read. My "Bright Idea" as it were is to have the original stories published again. I know it might take some work on our parts but let me interject my thoughts on it and let me know what you think.

If the original author is doing a sequel to their own work then they should publish the original story a couple days prior to the end date of the writing phase.

If the author is writing a sequel to someone elses story I truly think that they should have to ask the original author prior to writing thier story. I would feel honored if someone did a sequel to one of my stories but since it is my intelectual property I would at least liked to be asked first. But when the we contact the original author we should have them repost the prior CAW story a couple days before the end of the writing phase so it can be read prior to the contest.

In both cases the prior story would be posted by the original author and we still wouldn't know who wrote to the sequel. I think for the voting phase it would make all the stories more relevent if people who weren't familar with the original post could read them first. Also if I'm reading a sequel to something I might not have read for a few years it would be intresting to me to read the original first then see how well it flows into the new content.

This way unlike my original idea we wouldn't have to just repost random stories that aren't related to the new contest entries.

 

And that would violate the rules and spirit of anonymity. If I were in the contest and I had not won a CAW and I decided to write a sequel to The White, and I then posted The White a few days before the writing phase ends, and then a sequel to The White shows up...............it doesn't take much to add 2 + 2 and get 4.

It took me about 20 minutes to post 20+ stories that I wrote into one thread. Anyone can do the same. That was would acceptable. It would be especially helpful if a number of authors did that.

Your idea is fine if anonymity wasn't a core rule, but since it is, you just can't do it that way.

It also wouldn't be that hard that if you wanted to, you could in the first line of your submitted story have the Name, author, and a link to the story (either forum or stories site), so that way if people want to read the original they can.

 

Yep. In fact, we have some of that as an entry requirement in the rules...

When you submit your story, at the top of it, indicate what story yours is based upon, and the name of the author, like this:

The Name of Your Story
by your name

Based on "The name of the CAW story you based yours upon" by the name of the author.​

 

I'm not going to base my story on anyone else's story. My story will be an original work void of any stolen characters or story line.

So, if we submit an entry, we're going to put our name under the title of our story. If we do this, I assume you would edit and omit it before posting under CAW SOP account. Wouldn't it be easier to just not put the author's name upon submission?

Phoebe...you're correct. In the rules, AFTER ejls had approved things, I made some changes and obviously fumbled the ball on that part, dammit! 100% my mistake. Geez. Should be like this:

Don't fret, horse. Some of us are too busy reading old stories and coming up with great sequel ideas to ramble on about it here.

 

Well, well, well. Today I sat down on my sofa, put my feet up on the coffee table and had a chat with my main sock. I...we...decided that we'll enter the CAW and we'll maintain our anonymity. I know. I know. Following rules is so boring. After all, rules are for conformists and other losers who are too scared to spend part of their lives in jail.

So in the spirit of anonymity, my story shall be entered under the account of my main sock.

I have found over the years that CAWS fitted into one of two categories: ones I couldn't think of a story for (or, if you prefer, for which I couldn't think of a story) and those for which I could.

The former were immediately absurd ridiculous affairs while the latter were a tribute to the intelligence of the host and a fair challenge for all who dared consider themselves to be a writer of sufficient quality to enter that premier writing challenge.

This one is a bastard.

Not that it isn't a fair challenge (refer above for category determination ) but you (writers) are going to have a comparison made between your work and the original.

All I would suggest is that you write absolutely in your own style, don't even pay lip service to the way the original was written and don't follow any paths the original might throw out for "where to next" because that makes you predictable and predictable is boring.

No, cut those suckers off at the root and inflict your own so we don't know what's coming next.

Oh, yes and read every story, complete a thousand word essay on each one and encourage your fan base to save up so that they too can afford the airfare to the Nepalese Post Office from which the only official votes can be sent.

 

It wouldn't be a CAW without P-P bashing the idea.

It's really not as complicated as he would have people believe.
