Poll: Trump trails 2020 Democratic contenders in Michigan

In the crucial swing state of Michigan, President Trump trails all of his Democratic challengers that were asked about in a new EPIC-MRA of Lansing poll released Wednesday.

The survey flashes a warning sign for Trump, whose path to reelection likely runs through Midwest states like Michigan that historically vote Democratic but backed his 2016 bid against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Trump’s largest deficit in the poll is against former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, whom he trails by a 49 percent to 42 percent margin. He also trails former Vice President Joe Biden 50 percent to 44 percent, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) 50 percent to 45 percent, former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg 47 percent to 43 and Sen. Elizabeth Warren 48 percent to 45.

Trump's differences compared to Buttigieg and Warren fall within the poll’s margin of error.

Trump is dragged down by an underwater approval rating, with 43 percent of likely Michigan voters giving him a positive rating as president and 55 percent saying they’d give him a negative one.

The poll also showed little wiggle room for the president to improve his standing in Michigan, with no more than 10 percent of voters in any of the matchups saying they had not yet made up their minds.

Michigan is expected to be a chief battleground state in the presidential race after Trump defeated Clinton there by just 11,000 votes in 2016, marking the first time since 1988 that the Wolverine State voted for a Republican presidential candidate.

When voters were asked if they would definitely vote to reelect Trump or definitely vote against him if the election were today, 44 percent said they would replace him and 34 percent said they would back him. Another 19 percent said they would consider voting for someone else, and only 3 percent were undecided.

The campaign organizer, Kyle Jurek, has been on camera openly saying he is a communist, supports violence against political opponents, and burning cities to the ground if Sanders doesn’t win.

You would think that the Sanders campaign would at least try to distance themselves from Jurek or address it in any way, but they haven’t. Sanders and his campaign have largely attempted to ignore the situation. It’s helped that the media hasn’t done a lot to report on this as well. The tactic seems to be, ignore and distract.

This hasn’t at all stopped people from attempting to confront the Sanders campaign about what they’ve seen and heard from one of theirs on social media, and instead of responding, his state directors have apparently decided to privatize their accounts and shut themselves off as James O’Keefe has highlighted.

Remember that Jurek confessed some pretty horrifying things on camera, including treating dissidents to the communist political revolution with extreme violence and murder. He confessed that the idea behind Sanders’ promise of free education isn’t necessarily education but reeducation. He also claimed that there were more people just like him within the Sanders campaign, even rattling off a few names in the second video.

If these claims aren’t true, then it would behoove the Sanders campaign to come out and denounce him and everything they’ve said, but as of this writing, they haven’t. That doesn’t speak well for the Sanders campaign. At all

House Democrats launch effort to register minority voters in key districts

House Democrats' campaign arm launched a program Wednesday aimed at incentivizing minority voters to register to vote in 12 battleground districts.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) will invest six figures in placing organizers in districts with large African American, Hispanic, Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) and Native populations.

The effort, dubbed the Constituency Organizing Program, is intended to rally minority communities in nine Democratic-controlled districts as well as three vulnerable districts where a Republican incumbent is retiring.

“We are not taking anything – or anyone – for granted in 2020. This on the ground investment in building trust with core communities is another early, intentional step to engage and organize in communities of color,” said DCCC Chairwoman Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-Ill.).

The effort will target AAPI voters in three California districts to defend Democratic Reps. Gil Cisneros, Katie Porter and Harley Rouda.

The program will appeal to African American voters in defense of Georgia Rep. Lucy McGrath (D), and in an attempt to pick up retiring Georgia Republican Rep. Rob Woodall's seat. It will also seek to defend Democratic Reps. Joe Cunningham (S.C.) and Abigail Spanberger (Va.).

It'll also target Hispanic voters in New Mexico's second district in defense of Rep. Xóchitl Torres-Small (D) and in three Texas districts, supporting Rep. Lizzie Fletcher (D) as well as Democratic contenders for the vacant seats left by retiring GOP Reps. Pete Olson and Will Hurd.

“The Latino community is the tide that will turn Texas blue and I’m glad to see the DCCC is continuing to build on the critical work they started last year to engage Latino voters,” said Texas Rep. Veronica Escobar (D).

And in Arizona's first district, the program will target Native voters to help Rep. Tom O'Halleran (D) keep his seat.

The program follows the DCCC's success in rallying minority voters in 2018, a cycle when increased voter turnout, particularly in the southwest, was a cornerstone of the Democratic strategy to retake the House.

That strategy is based on research that shows early contact from campaigns can turn low-propensity minority voters into reliable electoral participants.

In many Texas districts with large Latino majorities, for example, participation more than doubled between 2014 and 2018, according to a post-election analysis by polling group Latino Decisions.

The DCCC and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) campaign arm, Bold PAC, have partnered in Texas, where Democrats are optimistic they can build on their 2018 gains by appealing to first-time Hispanic voters.

"This program is a great initiative by the DCCC to mobilize the Latino community in districts across the country where the Latino vote will make all the difference," said Rep. Tony Cárdenas (D-Calif.), the chairman of Bold PAC.

"Democrats need to speak to these voters early and often, and in order to do that, we need to keep making big investments in our community. In the upcoming months leading to the election, Bold PAC looks forward to continuing to work with the DCCC to protect and expand the most diverse House Democratic majority in history," said Cárdenas.

Democrats plan major investments in state legislative races

A top Democratic group will spend as much as $50 million trying to win back state legislative seats this year, a record-breaking investment that reflects the urgency of a pending redistricting and reapportionment process that will determine control of Congress for the next decade.

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) will target legislative seats in seven Republican-controlled states, where the party is within just a handful of seats of reclaiming control of one or both legislative chambers, said Jessica Post, the group’s president. Most of the states on the legislative chessboard are also key to both parties’ paths to the White House.

“We have this generational opportunity to change the composition of state legislatures while also building out this incredible infrastructure across the country to help the presidential campaign from the ground up,” Post said.

Democrats need to pick up just five seats to win back the North Carolina state Senate, and six seats to reclaim control of the state House. In Pennsylvania, Democrats are four seats from taking back the state Senate, and nine seats away from a House majority. They need four seats to flip the Michigan state House and the Iowa state House, two to reclaim the Minnesota state Senate and nine more seats to win control of the Texas state House.

The party is two seats away from controlling the Arizona state House for the first time since 1964, and three seats away from winning the state Senate for the first time since 1992.

The opportunities Democrats see this year reflect the fact that the party is still clawing its way back from the hole they dug for themselves in 2010, when the Tea Party tidal wave handed the GOP control of dozens of state legislative chambers. Republicans used those well-timed wins to draw district lines in their favor in states across the country, cementing control of many state legislatures — and the U.S. House of Representatives — for years to follow.

“It’s no surprise Democrats are excited, they’re at rock bottom and the only way is up,” said Dave Abrams, the spokesman for the Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC), the DLCC’s counterpart. “They’ve been losing in the states for a decade.”

But the 2018 midterms that handed Democrats control of the House also helped the party claw back state legislative seats it had not won in years. A year later, Democrats recaptured control of Virginia’s General Assembly for the first time since the early 1990s, a sign, Post said, that the political winds are still blowing favorably.

Today, Republicans control legislatures in 30 states, including Nebraska’s ostensibly nonpartisan Senate. Democrats control 19 state legislatures. Only one state, Minnesota, has a legislature in which the two chambers are controlled by different parties.

Republicans hold 3,838 of the 7,383 state legislative seats around the country, while Democrats hold 3,452 seats, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. A handful of seats are held by independents or representatives of minor parties.

With another redistricting cycle at hand, the stakes could hardly be higher. In Texas alone, legislators will have the chance to draw 38 or 39 U.S. House districts, depending on final population counts due next year. If Republicans maintain control, Gov. Greg Abbott (R) could sign off on a map that gives his party a distinct advantage. But if Democrats snag control of the state House, they would have an important seat at the table, one that would virtually guarantee they would win more than the 13 seats they currently hold.

“Texas obviously is sort of the crown jewel of redistricting,” Post said. She pointed to a number of incumbent Republicans who have said they will not run again in 2020 — both at the federal level and in key state legislative races.

The remaining Democratic targets will help determine control of dozens of congressional seats. After the 2010 Census, North Carolina Republicans drew a district map that handed them 10 of the state’s 13 U.S. House seats, though those lines were subsequently thrown out by a court. Pennsylvania Republicans also drew largely favorable district lines that were later nixed by the state Supreme Court, and Republican-drawn lines are still in place in Michigan, where the GOP won 10 of 14 seats as recently as the 2016 elections.

Arizona’s district lines are drawn by a bipartisan commission, while Iowa’s lines are only ratified by legislators at the end of the process.

After the Republican sweep of 2010 and the subsequent advantage the party made for itself, both sides are taking the upcoming redistricting period more seriously than in the past. The DLCC already has more than 40 staffers working across the country, and both the DLCC and the RSLC have raised record sums.

The RSLC and a sister organization said earlier this month they had raised $19 million in 2019, an off-year record.

A constellation of outside groups are also recognizing the importance of what can otherwise be sleepy down-ballot races. In Virginia, groups like the League of Conservation Voters, Everytown for Gun Safety and EMILY’s List poured millions into Democratic campaigns. Those groups, and their equivalents on the right, plan similar splurges this year.

Republicans and Democrats are conscious of the impacts the top of the ticket will have on their abilities to win legislative races that can be easily drowned out. The GOP’s success in 2010 came in a midterm election, when turnout was much lower than the millions more who will turn out in a presidential year. President Trump’s presence on the ballot will help drive Republican turnout in some places, but he will hurt in others where his popularity lags.

Democrats know, too, that some of their presidential candidates would have a different impact down the ballot should they become the nominee.

“We do everything that we can to make sure that our candidates are differentiated from the Democrats at the top of the ticket,” Post said.

These 6 GOP senators have negative approval ratings — threatening Republican control in 2020

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) may not be in control of the body following the 2020 elections. In fact, he might not even be a senator.

On Thursday, Morning Consult released a new poll on all 100 senators, based on 494,899 interviews with voters. The survey had some major red flags for Republicans hoping to hold control of the chamber in 2020.

President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial is putting enormous pressure on vulnerable Republicans, Morning Consult’s Eli Yokley explained.

“The Senate’s impeachment trial is set to provide a familiar political dilemma for the chamber’s most vulnerable Republicans: Cross President Donald Trump and face the wrath of his ardent base, or side with him and alienate the broader coalition in their states, where the president is unpopular,” Yokley wrote.

This can be seen in the polls of GOP senators standing for reelection in 2020.

In Kentucky, McConnell himself is wildly unpopular. Only 37% of Kentucky voters approve of McConnell, while 50% disagree — giving the GOP leader a net approval rating of -13.

However, McConnell is no longer the most unpopular senator in America, that title now belongs to Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), who has a 42% approval rating, while 52% of Maine voters disapprove, for an approval rating of -10.

Four other GOP senators up for re-election in 2020 have underwater approval ratings.

Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) has a -5% approval rating while Sen. Martha McSally (R-AZ), Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO), and Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) were all clocked at -3 approval ratings.

Trump loses almost every matchup with top 2020 Democrats in Florida, Wisconsin and Michigan, polls find

WASHINGTON – Most of the top Democratic candidates hold narrow leads over President Donald Trump in the key states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Florida, according to three recent polls.

In the swing state of Florida, which has broken for the winner by slim margins in the last six presidential elections, former Vice President Joe Biden edged out Trump 51.4%-48.6% in a hypothetical matchup, according to a poll from Florida Atlantic University.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., performed even better, beating the president 52.9%-47.1%. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts led Trump by less than 2 percentage points, 50.8%-49.2%. And the poll found former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg in a 50%-50% tie with the president.

Biden held a strong lead over the rest of the Democratic field in Florida as the choice of 41.5% of Democratic primary voters there. Sanders was second at 15.5%, followed by Warren at 9.7%, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg at 6.8%, Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota at 6.1%, entrepreneur Andrew Yang at 5.1% and Buttigieg at 3.3%.

"Joe Biden continues to be in a very strong position in Florida," said Monica

Escaleras, director of the university's Business and Economics Polling Initiative. "However, it will be interesting to see what impact the early contests in New Hampshire and Iowa will have on voters in Florida regarding their support for Biden."

Like the nation at large, Floridians were split on impeachment. A slim majority of 51% said the Senate should not convict and remove Trump in his impeachment trial, while 49% thought he should be removed.

The Florida Atlantic University poll was conducted from Jan. 9-12 with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.

In Wisconsin, a poll from a Marquette University Law School found Biden leading Trump by four percentage points, 49%-45% and Sanders with a tight one-point lead, 47%-46%. But Trump led Warren in Wisconsin 48%-45% and Buttigieg 46%-44%.

Trump won the state in 2016 after it had voted for the Democrat in every presidential race since 1988. Democrats will likely have to win Wisconsin back to retake the White House.

Biden led in the Wisconsin primary race as well with 23% support, but Sanders was close behind at 19%. Buttigieg was third at 15%, followed by Warren at 14%.

Voters in the Badger State were slightly more opposed to impeachment than those in Florida. Forty-nine percent opposed the House vote to impeach Trump, compared with 47% who approved the move. Forty-nine percent also opposed a Senate conviction, while 44% favored Trump's removal.

The Marquette poll was conducted from Jan. 8-12 with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1%.

Michigan is another state that had been considered safely Democratic until 2016. Before that election, Michigan voted for the Democrat in every presidential race dating back to 1992.

According to a poll from EPIC-MRA of Lansing, Michigan, Democrats have a fair chance of winning the state in 2020.

Biden would beat Trump 50%-44% if the election were held today, the poll found. Sanders led Trump in the poll 50%-45%, Warren was up 48%-45% and Buttigieg led him 47%-43% Bloomberg, who was included in the polls in Florida and Wisconsin, beat Trump 49%-47%.

Sen. Sanders admits impeachment trial may hurt his presidential campaign

2020 Democrat hopeful Bernie Sanders recently admitted the impeachment trial is going to negatively affect his presidential campaign. While talking to reporters in Washington on Thursday, the Vermont senator said the trial may take several weeks, which he would rather spend campaigning in Iowa and New Hampshire to win the Democrat Party nomination.

Sen. Sanders said he will have to do his job as U.S. senator instead. Despite losing the valuable time, he suggested the Senate should call new impeachment witnesses to testify.

“I would hope that Sen. (Mitch) McConnell allows us to have a full and fair trial,’ he stated. “When you have a trial you hear from witnesses, that’s what we do in the United States, and I hope McConnell will allow those witnesses to testify and give us their version of what happened.”

U.S. Supreme Court takes up presidential Electoral College dispute

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - As the 2020 race heats up, the Supreme Court agreed on Friday to hear a dispute involving the complex U.S. presidential election system focusing on whether Electoral College electors are free to break their pledges to back the candidate who wins their state's popular vote, an act that could upend an election.

The Supreme Court will take up appeals in two cases - from Washington state and Colorado - involving electors who decided to vote in the Electoral College process for someone other than Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016 even though she won the popular vote in their states.

The justices will determine if such so-called faithless electors have the discretion to cast Electoral College votes as they see fit or whether states can impose restrictions including with penalties. The case is expected to be argued in April and decided by the end of June.

President Donald Trump is seeking re-election on Nov. 3, with a field of Democrats seeking their party's nomination to challenge him. His administration did not take a side in either case.

"We are glad the Supreme Court has recognized the paramount importance of clearly determining the rules of the road for presidential electors for the upcoming election and all future elections," said Lawrence Lessig, a lawyer for the faithless electors sanctioned in Washington and Colorado.

Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold, a Democrat, said she hopes the justices will let states enforce their laws.

"Unelected and unaccountable presidential electors should not be allowed to decide the presidential election without regard to voters' choices and state law," Griswold said.

The dispute involves the U.S. presidential election system set out in the U.S. Constitution in which the winner is determined not by amassing a majority of the national popular vote but by securing a majority of the electoral votes that are allotted to the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

Individuals who serve as Electoral College electors - typically party loyalists - cast these votes. All states, with the exception of Maine and Nebraska, have a winner-takes-all system awarding all electors to the presidential candidate who wins the state's popular vote.

The number of electors in each state is the sum of its two U.S. senators and its number of members in the House of Representatives, based on population size. The District of Columbia, which is not a state, is allotted three electors.

Typically an overlooked formality, the Electoral College took on greater importance after the 2016 election, when 10 electors cast ballots for someone other than their party's candidate. That was an unusually high number of faithless electors and could have changed the outcome in five of the 58 prior U.S. presidential elections, according to legal papers in one of the appeals filed at the Supreme Court.

LOSING THE POPULAR VOTE

Trump defeated Democratic rival Hillary Clinton by a margin of 304 to 227 Electoral College votes despite losing the popular vote nationally by about 3 million votes. Faithless electors could change the outcome of presidential elections with thinner Electoral College margins.

Electors pledge to vote for their party's candidate if that person wins the state's popular vote. At issue in the cases are laws requiring that electors follow through on those pledges.

While 32 states and the District of Columbia have such laws, a handful enforce them by removing and replacing faithless electors, or in some cases, imposing fines.

The plaintiffs challenged the sanctions, saying they were deprived of their rights under the Constitution's Article II as well as its 12th Amendment, which spell out the Electoral College process.

In Colorado, one elector, Micheal Baca, was replaced and his vote canceled when he sought to vote for Republican John Kasich, Ohio's former governor. A federal judge dismissed Baca's challenge, but the Denver-based 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last year revived the suit, concluding that Baca's constitutional rights were violated.

The Washington state case arose after three faithless electors voted for former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, a moderate Republican, instead of Clinton. They each were fined $1,000 for their defiance, which they called the first such penalty in U.S. history. The Washington Supreme Court in 2019 upheld the fines.
