House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi announces 7 impeachment mangers for a Senate trial: Reps. Adam Schiff, Jerry Nadler, Zoe Lofgren, Hakeem Jeffries, Val Demings, Jason Crow and Sylvia Garcia.

Constitutional law professor Jonathan Turley laid out a sweeping indictment of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., arguing that her impeachment strategy backfired and gave Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., the upper hand.

"The delay now seems largely driven by a desire to preserve the image of Pelosi as a master strategist despite a blunder of the first order," Turley wrote in a column titled, "Pelosi's Blunder: How the House Destroyed its Own Case for Impeachment."

His comments came as Pelosi prepared to transmit articles of impeachment to the Senate, roughly a month after the House approved them. She initially withheld them in an apparent attempt to draw concessions from McConnell. On Wednesday she announced the seven lawmakers who will serve as impeachment managers to prosecute the case against the president at his Senate trial.

"There was no reason why Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell would make concessions to get an impeachment that he loathed," Turley wrote.

Turley similarly suggested that Pelosi pushed impeachment out of "vanity" and would pay a "high price" for doing so.


"The fact is that Pelosi played into the hands of McConnell by first rushing this impeachment forward with an incomplete record and now giving him the excuse to summarily change the rules, or even to dismiss the articles," he said.

"Waiting for the House to submit a list of managers was always a courtesy extended by Senate rules and not a requirement of the Constitution. By inappropriately withholding the articles of impeachment and breaking with tradition, Pelosi simply gave McConnell ample reason to exercise the “nuclear option” and change the rules on both majority voting as well as the rule for the start of trials. That is a high price to pay for vanity."

On Twitter, Turley also derided a presser in which Pelosi announced her list of impeachment managers for the Senate's trial.

"Speaker Pelosi's statement that 'time has been our friend' is bizarre," Turley tweeted. "The new evidence and witnesses could have been part of the record with actual testimony and discovery by the House. Instead, she did nothing for 4 weeks and hoped for the tide to bring flotsam wreckage."

The presser seems entirely structured to defend Pelosi as a master strategist on impeachment despite every indication to the contrary. Turley previously testified before the House Judiciary Committee as part of the Democrats' impeachment inquiry. During that testimony, he cautioned House members against hastily pursuing impeachment.

“One can oppose President Trump’s policies or actions but still conclude that the current legal case for impeachment is not just woefully inadequate, but in some respects, dangerous, as the basis for the impeachment of an American president,” Turley previously said.

I thought I knew her well. I knew Nancy Pelosi is the greatest House Speaker in at least modern US history. But once again I am sitting here just stunned at how amazing she is. The one thing Pelosi and Democrats in general for that matter have always lacked in TV exposure. Even on MSNBC there are usually two Republican to every Democrat. And they will always short change them. One thing that is really common on MSNBC is they broadcast every world Moscow Mitch says and then when Schumer starts to speak they will give him about 30 seconds and cut away.

So for the first time since I have been watching Speaker Pelosi has the riveted attention of the press and public. They cover every word she says and keep the cameras on her. And Pelosi takes an amazing advantage. What the Democrats are actually doing is policy which is hard to get people to understand because its complicated and boring. With spotlight on here though, and a press dying for news on impeachment that doesn't dare cut away Pelosi, like a junior high schoot teacher, goes through and updates the entire Democratic agenda. Educating the American people.

Which is pretty amazing to me. But then she opens the room to questions and they can never trip her up. It doesn't matter what topic or what angle Pelosi is just quick, brilliant, cutting, and humorous thinking on her feet. I've been a political junky for 50 years and I have never seen anything quite like her. It not only makes me proud to have Nancy Pelosi as speaker. It also makes me feel safer and gives me hope.

An incredible leader.

Just kidding. It’s incredibly easy: This is the time it happens — people who previously acted like friends now turn on each other.

It’s the only time we get to see — to this degree — the real nature of politics.

Van thought it was pitiful.

And, in his view, there’s nothing on that stage that can pose a threat to Donald “The Animal” Trump:

“Democrats need to do better than what we saw tonight. Nothing I saw tonight would be able to take Donald Trump out — and I want to see a Democrat in the White House.”

BET founder Bob Johnson thinks the same, although for perhaps a different reason.

In November, he made that clear to CNBC:

“I think what the Democrats have to do is to be careful not to get caught up in stylistic Trump, and more substantive Trump. … I do not see anybody in the Democratic primary races today that is enough in the center — where I believe most of the voters are…”

Also where they are: sitting on the couch watching Van Jones say this:

“Are any of these people prepared for what Donald Trump is going to do to us? And to see further division tonight is very dispiriting.”

They may not be prepared, but it’s coming nonetheless. And it’s not gonna be pretty.

Stop The Presses: Even Chris Wallace Thinks Pelosi Lost to Mitch McConnell

The sad hits keep on coming for Nancy Pelosi as one D.C. insider after another says she overplayed her hand in holding the impeachment articles to force Mitch McConnell to do her bidding.

Mitch is too lawmaker gangster for that.


Earlier today, I wrote here at Red State, that Jonathon Turkey remarked that Nancy made a bad political move and didn’t get Mitch to blink Constitutional Law Professor Jonathan Turley: Pelosi Played Right Into McConnell’s Hands and now another insider from the beltway.

Now I know Wallace is not everyone’s cup of tea but there is no denying that he has been in the town for a very long time and he has seen the game played more times than you or I could combined. He knows all the players and he has seen the power moves over and over. That he is saying this is something to take note of.


According to The Hill…

“I want to just talk, if I could briefly, Harris, about the Speaker Pelosi’s delay, the months delay in sending over the articles of impeachment, because I think you can see it two ways,” Wallace told “Outnumbered Overtime” anchor Harris Faulkner.

“If the purpose was to force Mitch McConnell to bow to her will and agree to call witnesses and get more documents, then it was a total failure.”

“There’s no question about it,” he added. “She didn’t do that.”

If you are on @TeamPelosi you must be wandering around a lot lately just muttering “Et Tu ( Insert Name) and curse the sky.

As I have said over and over and over, I think Nancy Pelosi was a helluva politician. Everyone has their time to hang up the spikes and I imagine the Progressive Cheer Squad just wore her down and forced her into a non-savvy move. Everyone makes mistakes of course but not generally to the tune of millions of dollars blown, wasted legislative time and ticking off a loyal base of Donald Trump.

Bummer.

Even though the MSM has been trying to peddle the narrative that the delay did force talk of witnesses in the Senate, you are forgetting that McConnell is still in control of THAT chamber and not Nancy. He didn’t blink for almost 4 weeks while she pulled this desperate stunt and if you think he was just sitting idly by while he waited for her to send those papers by snail mail across the Capitol, you would be wrong.

The Senate Majority leader is every bit as savvy as The Speaker of the House. The only difference right now is that he is on top of his game and Pelosi is dealing with AOC and her agenda of not supporting other Democrats.

I’m going to side with Jonathon Turley and Chris Wallace on this one and say that Mitch bested Nancy on this so far and will continue to do so.

I can’t wait until next Tuesday.

Damn this hardly ever happens. The networks are giving Chuck Schumer more than 5 minutes of uninterrupted air time to expose the GOP "diversion of the day."
