Not that 88,000 deaths are anything to sneeze at... get it? But if not for the restrictions that were placed, it would have been far worse. It isn't over yet either. With more people throwing caution to the wind, I expect to see more death and heartache to come.
I will continue to use social distancing procedures until I feel things have changed for the better. I'm not feeling it now.
The thing is, we are opening back up now but with procedures in place to minimalize the danger as best we can while getting people back to work. We should embrace this effort not condemn it,because it might just save the life of somebody you love. Or yours.

Leaked Pentagon Memo Says Vaccine Not Likely to be Ready Until Mid-2021: Report

A leaked Pentagon memo warns of “the real possibility of a resurgence” of the coronavirus and says that an effective vaccine will not be ready until “at least the summer of 2021,” contradicting Defense Secretary Mark Esper’s vow to deliver a vaccine “at scale” by the end of the year, Task and Purpose reports. “We have a long path ahead, with the real possibility of a resurgence of COVID-19,” the memo reads. The memo reportedly outlines a plan for the U.S. military to resume training and reposition forces, as well as supplies, to equip the country in the fight against the coronavirus. It was written by Kenneth Rapuano, assistant secretary of defense for homeland defense and global security, for Esper, however he didn’t sign it. It says the pandemic will “likely continue until there is wide-scale immunity, through immunization, and some immunity post-recovery from the virus.”

President Trump last week outlined a plan to deliver “hundreds of millions” of coronavirus vaccine doses by the end of this year. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious diseases expert, has said that developing a vaccine would take 12 to 18 months, in the best case scenario.

Researcher Claims 36,000 Lives Could’ve Been Saved If US Had Started Social Distancing One Week Earlier

A Columbia University research model has attempted to quantify the fatal costs of the country’s belated coronavirus response, and it estimates that tens of thousands fewer Americans would’ve died had rigorous social distancing rules been put in place just one week earlier.

The lead researcher from the study, Dr. Jeffrey Shaman, discussed the yet-to-be-peer-reviewed model with CNN’s Don Lemon on Wednesday night. The results of his counterfactual simulation showed that 36,000 lives across the country, and more than half of the deaths seen in New York City, could have been saved by May 3rd with a more aggressive response.

“So, nearly 36,000 fewer deaths? I mean, this is not only startling and tragic, but — but it speaks to how quickly this virus spiraled out of control,” Lemon said.

“Absolutely. I mean, what we’re dealing with is something that really can spread like wildfire through a population,” Shaman agreed. “Unfortunately when you have a new novel virus, almost the entire population of the world is susceptible to it. They’re all campaign of being infected by it, and as it moves into the community, it doubles over a period of time. Each period of time it will accelerate up one, two, four, eight, and so on number of cases. The consequence of this is, if you don’t recognize the problem early, and if you don’t jump on it, it’s going to really come down on you harder than it would otherwise. And just a very small backtracking of our social distancing measures, so if we had taken them, in fact, just one week earlier, has a very drastic effect in reducing the number of cases and deaths that we would have seen thus far.”

For context: On March 10, President Donald Trump was still downplaying the risk from Covid-19, saying: “Just stay calm. It will go away.” It wasn’t until March 13 that he declared a national emergency. Likewise, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio was resistant to initiate lockdown rules, saying: “We’ll tell you the second we think you should change your behavior,” on March 5th. It wasn’t until March 22 that shelter-in-place rules were put in effect for his city, while California and Washington had already taken those same steps days earlier.

Shaman then pointed to the repercussions of that initial, delayed response as reflected in his team’s model and how that has sobering implications for the efforts to relax social distancing rules and reopen the economy going forward.

“As we loosen these restrictions, it’s possible we could start to have the growth of the virus in a lot of communities if we’re not careful,” Shaman warned. “If social distancing practices lapse. If people aren’t wearing face masks as they start to go to businesses and restaurants and theaters. If we don’t monitor this and if we don’t recognize it really early and jump on it, it’s going to jump out of control again. We’re going to have problems again. We’re going to have growth that’s beyond our expectations and we’re going to see surging of people coming into hospitals again.”

“We may have good news going forward going with this, but the real key here is if we’re not vigilant, if we’re not testing and tracing in these communities, we’re not actively looking for the virus, it can really sneak up on us,” Shaman added. “It really speaks to how sensitive this virus is or how sensitive the control of the virus is if you can get out in front of it really early. That exponential growth phase it was going through in early March in New York City is devastating.”

As the U.S. death toll from the coronavirus nears one hundred thousand, disapproval of President Donald Trump’s response to the pandemic has climbed to a high of 60 percent.

According to a new ABC News/Ipsos poll, just 39 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the crisis, while a whopping 60 percent now disapprove. Those figures represent a new low and a new high, respectively, since the outlet began polling the question in March.

The poll found an unsurprisingly sharp division along party lines, but the pollster reports that Trump’s decline is fueled by a slide among independent voters. “Just over one-third of independents (35%) approve of the president’s response to the coronavirus, a dip from one month ago, when 42% of independents approved,” ABC notes.

The survey also measured public opinion that brings into sharp relief the disparate impact of the coronavirus on people of color.

Thirty percent of black adults and 26% of Latino adults in the country said they know a victim of the coronavirus, who died either from the disease or from complications related to the virus. For white adults, the corresponding figure is 10%.

The findings are consistent with local and national data reported by states and cities and reviewed by ABC News that revealed racial and ethnic minorities suffer a disproportionate share of the negative health and economic outcomes from the coronavirus pandemic.

The poll also found that whites were much more likely to say they were “very confident” they’d be able to get tested for the disease if they needed to than black or Hispanic respondents. But that result was low across the board, at 38 percent for white respondents, and 25 percent each for black and Hispanic respondents.
