It may well be the case that COVID-19 leaves permanent damage to the human body, and that one who has been infected and who seems to have recovered becomes more vulnerable to being infected again. Until we know that this is not true it is too early to look forward to achieving herd immunity.

The flu epidemic of 1918 - 1919 killed an estimated fifty million people world side. We recovered from that so well that I never learned about it until I was in college. So far COVID-19 seems to be less dangerous than that. Nevertheless, I think it is premature to lift the precautions.

we could be reducing some unnecessary deaths. For instance, since the top speed limit in the U.S. is 75, mandate that no car can be made or sold that exceeds that speed. It would certainly save lives. Mandate that all cars made from this date on are equipped with the software to automatically slow and brake when too near another car and that monitors lane adherence. it would certainly save lives. Problem is, the self centered assholes who make the highways dangerous would object. Second; enforce the 2nd amendment in a way the founding fathers would have understood...everyone has the right to bear the following arms: pistols and rifles that shoot one shot and then have to be reloaded. There is no way in hell the 2nd amendment would have ever been written if they could have envisioned the assault weapons we how have. This would certainly save thousands of lives. But again, the brainless twits who need a weapon to prove their manhood will never agree. Oh, and by the way, the 2nd amendment never mentions guns, rifles or pistols...it says ARMS, which includes by definition bazookas, flame throwers, surface to air missiles...etc. Can anyone with a straight face or half a brain think it would be alright for Americans to own and bear any of these things? just remember, the guy living next door just might be a liberal who thinks it could be fun to torch you some night.

 

Traffic accidents were greatly reduced when the speed limit was reduced to 55 mph in the US. Kinetic energy = 1/2 mass x velocity squared after all. There have already been over 500, 000 vehicle deaths this year. So maybe you have a point

As far as the second amendment goes, if people are so bothered by it then they should write to their representatives to sponsor another amendment to strike it down. There is precedent for that.

In the meantime, gun laws in the US that are the toughest are in areas that have the most gun crime. The mass killings in Paris at Charlie Hebdo and the rock show and other venues were carried out with automatic weapons which are as illegal in France as owning a tank. So I don’t have any solution for gun violence.

It's just over 5 months into the year and nobody is on the roads.

 

They do limit the top speeds of vehicles. It's really hard to hit >100 mph on any modern vehicle because they top out in the 90s. I've done it and literally had to go down mountains to hit 100. Backup cameras are also pretty much standard. Most of your safety suggestions are already being implemented.
