‘Art Of The Deal’ Co-Author Spells Out Why Coronavirus Deaths ‘Don’t Matter’ To Trump
“The deaths, I know this is extreme, the deaths don’t matter to him,” Tony Schwartz told MSNBC’s Ari Melber.

Donald Trump’s former ghostwriter declared Friday that the president really doesn’t care about the deaths resulting from the coronavirus pandemic because he has “no conscience” and is solely motivated by the need to dominate.

Tony Schwartz, who co-authored Trump’s 1987 book “The Art of the Deal,” explained to MSNBC’s Ari Melber how the president’s repeated premature declarations of victory in the fight against the contagion had prompted him to “really rethink Trump’s motivation.”

“I’ve always assumed like most people have that the primary motivation is to be loved and admired and recognized and praised,” said Schwartz. “That is a motivation but the deeper motivation is domination, is to win. And that is a function of the fact that he has no conscience.”

“And let’s be clear. No conscience,” he added.

Schwartz acknowledged most people find it hard to understand how Trump doesn’t feel or make a distinction between right or wrong.

It gives the president “an enormous advantage in a situation where most people would be limited by their respect for the truth and by their concern for how they were going to have an impact on others,” added Schwartz.

“The deaths, I know this is extreme, the deaths don’t matter to him,” Schwartz concluded, in reference to the nationwide 88,000-person death toll from the pandemic. “If it’s this decision between saving himself and saving others, it is no contest.”

Trump is clearly a sociopath, but can we call sociopathology a mental illness? I doubt it. Mental illness prevents one from achieving what one wants to in life. Psychotics need to be hospitalized, or they require medication in order to function in society at reduced capacity. A neurotic is someone who is more frightened, depressed, and/or hostile than he needs to be, considering his situation and prospects in life.

Hostile people commit crimes, but not people who are frightened and depressed.

Despite Trump's deficiencies as a human being he has been remarkably successful as a human being. He is not mentally ill; he is evil.

What Rick Bright publicly revealed more than anyone else is that, if we continue to push a president’s wishful narrative over medical expertise and fail to coordinate a national response, “2020 could be the darkest winter in modern history.” Mental health experts have been trying to inform the public that not even a nuclear winter could be ruled out.

Dr. Bright, a top government virologist, in testimony before the U.S. House of Representatives last week, described the very consequences we warned against. He testified that the totally disastrous handling of the pandemic has led to a level of death and tragedy, as well as to an unprecedented economic collapse, that did not have to be.

From our perspective, it is the natural consequence of having a mentally impaired president. Like a cascade, psychological disturbance in the high office progresses into social, cultural, and geopolitical dangers which, in the context of a pandemic, manifest as a dangerous inability to contain the pandemic at home and to lead a coordinated response abroad as the U.S. has traditionally done.

Benjamin Franklin’s axiom that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is apt here. In this Mental Health Awareness month, focus on the severe stresses of the pandemic and its serious mental health consequences might have been prudent. But even greater prevention is necessary and should not be neglected.

What is prevention? It is not letting problems get out of hand before beginning to think of doing something. Most problems are the product of a long process, and the better we understand the process, the earlier we can intervene.

Stages of Prevention
There are three levels of prevention: primary prevention, or intervening before any problem occurs; secondary prevention, or intervening immediately when there are signs of a problem; and tertiary prevention, or intervening in a problem that has started so that it does not grow worse. One of the major achievements of modern medicine is that we have learned to intervene early based on scientific evidence. Fully half of human beings are thought to be alive today because of improvements in prevention.

Another way of visualizing this is the upstream-downstream model. In the imagery of a swiftly flowing river, we can picture preventive measures and health promotion happening upstream and disease and illness occurring downstream. Intervening early at the upstream level allows for the greatest possible reduction of disease and suffering for whole populations at the downstream level. Public health is sometimes called the art of preventing disease and promoting health, as it is responsible for the health and safety of populations.

Dr. Bright is a medical professional trained in infectious disease, while I am one trained in mental disease. My colleagues and I felt our own obligation to speak up, early in 2017, when the societal ramifications of not following mental health expertise became clear, just as the national consequences of not heeding pandemic expertise are becoming clear. I have been invited to meet privately with at least 50 members of the U.S. Congress, but neither any of my colleagues nor I have been able to appear before any Congressional committee, despite the efforts of our many advocates inside and outside of the Congress.

CDC’s Role
Prevention is central to the work of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It has played a major, pioneering role in violence prevention, and, creating recommendations with the World Health Organization (WHO), helped 133 nations to succeed in lowering global homicide rates by 16% over 12 years. Likewise, Americans hardly remember malaria, tuberculosis, polio, and autoimmune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) being endemic in the United States because of the CDC’s work in public health promotion.

Most of my violence prevention efforts have been through public health, which involves collaborating with other disciplines and across sectors at the societal level, and not only treating violent offenders after they have become violent, as has been my work with the WHO’s Violence and Injury Prevention Department since 2002. My teaching activities at Yale Law School, like my clinical work, progressed from helping students to represent clients who were traumatized to proposing a course on preventing trauma and violence in the first place, through therapeutic uses of the law and policy.

Donald Trump’s response to the pandemic was predictable through the evidence we document in The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump but even more so from the high-quality, abundant reports by close associates under sworn testimony in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report. The defunding, dismantling, and disabling of the CDC, not to mention a dubious choice for its head, such that it would hardly be able to function in a crisis, are unsurprising results.

Retaliation for Speaking Out
Another consequence of mental impairment in the presidency is that truth-tellers are subject to severe retaliation, as we often see under dangerous regimes. Dr. Bright had to file a whistleblower complaint after being removed from his role for trying to push science before politics, but he is still risking his pension, his health, and his life in a heroic effort to prevent greater disaster for all Americans.

Intimidation and silencing have also befallen other key medical persons who do not subscribe to the preferred narrative, such as Dr. Anthony Fauci. The president has also ordered censorship and withholding of important CDC guidelines from the public while prohibiting the CDC from holding its own press conferences. Our experience is no different; how the American Psychiatric Association, on behalf of the Trump Administration, has used its influence and reputation to discredit and to silence any mental health professional who would speak up is an important story that has been reported on.

We may have the greatest concentration of top scientists that should make us a world leader against a pandemic, but we have become its epicenter. We may have the largest number of world-renowned mental health experts that should have prepared us for a mentally impaired president, but we have become his hostages.

Consequences of having a mentally compromised president are growing ever more dire because a crisis will not disappear by wishing it away, and critical decisions are being taken in the wrong direction every day as the situation worsens and his approval ratings fall. It is not too late to halt the next cascade by choosing prevention.

A psychiatrist explains why Trump’s obsession with a Joe Scarborough murder conspiracy might be a sign of dementia

President Donald Trump’s unrelenting attacks on MSNBC host Joe Scarborough could be evidence of cognitive decline, according to Dr. John M. Talmadge, a psychiatrist and professor at a major American medical school.

Trump has urged law enforcement to re-examine the 2001 death of Lori Klausutis, an aide to Scarborough. The president continues to push an unfounded conspiracy theory that the MSNBC host — who was a Republican congressman at the time — was somehow responsible for her death.

According to the Associated Press, “an autopsy revealed that Klausutis had an undiagnosed heart condition and a coroner concluded she passed out and hit her head as she fell.”

Talmadge has long used Twitter to express his concern about what he sees as the president’s deteriorating mental condition. The psychiatrist views Trump’s latest obsession with Scarborough as another sign that Trump might be suffering from dementia.

Talmadge told Raw Story that narcissism and other personality traits likely play a role in Trump’s attacks on Scarborough.

“Politicians are universally narcissistic, self-centered, and to some extent ill-mannered. Charles Krauthammer, M.D., the legendary columnist (and psychiatrist!) and Fox contributor, had an entire talk on the subject of Obama’s narcissism. Charles and I discussed Obama at least a half dozen times over the years,” he said.

“It’s very easy, then, to attribute bad behavior and stupid ideas to a politician’s personality disorder rather than — as in Trump’s case — a more serious brain disease.”

Talmadge also said that Trump has displayed an “obsessed with sex, power, fame, and an insatiable need for adoration” for most of his adult life.

“Because Trump is by nature such a bad actor, such a born criminal, and such an untrustworthy person, the natural tendency is to blame his character defects for all of his bullshit, calf splatter, and despicable behavior — as well as his unforgivable errors in judgment and poor impulse control,” he explained.

But Trump’s personality isn’t the only factor behind some of his unusual behaviors.

“Ordinary bullshitters and mediocre criminal types don’t make the types of unforced errors that Trump makes almost on a daily basis. He lost the ability to think strategically or conceptually. This is why he talks AT people, never WITH people. He cannot grasp basic ideas like compromise, justice, well-being, spirituality, or any other abstraction,” Talmadge said.

“Ask him about his strategy for Afghanistan, or his thoughts about resolving the healthcare crisis, and he will tell a ‘Sir’ story and bullshit about something unrelated to the question. He does it every time. He did not do this in interviews 20 years ago. He wasn’t bright or exceptionally articulate, but he could answer a question in plain English, with at least a high school vocabulary.“

This is one reason that I started posting long excerpts from his briefings, statements, and rally splatters. One could quite literally write a book. The working press tends to sanitize his speeches and quotations, and this leaves me astonished,” Talmadge told Raw Story.

Trump has faced a backlash from some of his fellow Republicans, as well as conservative publications such as the Wall Street Journal and National Review. But there is no indication that the president will stop his attacks on Scarborough.

“Specifically with regard to his ‘obsession’ about Joe Scarborough, it’s quite common in dementia for the affected individual to seize upon emotionally charged material, in this case his hatred of Joe & Mika. He does this with Congressman Adam Schiff, Nancy Pelosi, and others — it’s always about rage, grievance, and high emotion,” Talmadge said.

“At the same time, he selectively ignores his own behavior (often worse) as well as the behavior of people like the criminals surrounding him: Manafort, Cohen, Flynn, and others. His inability to reason or problem-solve leaves him treating Kim and Putin like comic book heroes. It’s curious and bizarre, but that’s what happens in dementing illnesses.”

“That all of this is brain related is evident in his angry outbursts at the working press, particularly women, and particularly women of color. An intelligent, normal man would think through his strategies for handling criticism, opposition, and attacks. A normal executive would look at the disapprobation heaped upon Clinton, Bush, and Obama, some of which was nuclear in intensity, and take a lesson in strategy. A nation most afflicted with a mental health problem is the least likely to address it. I am speaking of the mental health, or lack thereof, of the president. His psychological impairments have been deadly through action and inaction, and are now promoting police brutality through pronouncements such as, “when the looting starts, the shooting starts,” while marking protesters as “thugs”.

It is an uncomfortable fact that needs to be stated: the president’s dangerous psychology has resulted in tens of thousands more deaths, with still no end in sight. He is responsible for the lockdown and the economic collapse. We knew in advance that he could not handle a crisis, and that his attempts to cover up his incapacity would result in more devastating crises.

That the mental health field has been silent is unconscionable, and there is no way around it. If the people cannot count on health professionals to stand up for human safety and survival, to whom can they turn? Our ethics code explicitly states that physicians have a “responsibility to patients … as well as to society.” That a prominent psychiatric association has campaigned not just to protect a public figure over public safety, but stopped independent mental health professionals from fulfilling their societal duty, should be the scandal of our era.

Psychological dangerousness in a presidency has translated into social, cultural, public health and now civic dangers.

We know from the pandemic that the exclusion of expert input can be a death pact, and mental health is no exception. Now, with a nation in flames, we cannot pretend it was unknowable. Mental health professionals do not just diagnose mental illness. We assess signs of psychological dangerousness, and warning and protecting potential victims, including the public, is one of our most primary duties. By the time violence erupts, there has usually been a long process leading up to it.

Trump did not invent racism, nor generated the pandemic, but, as we anticipated, psychological dangerousness in a presidency has translated into social, cultural, public health, and now civic dangers. Human beings are symbolic creatures, and the office of the president carries great symbolism. A president who lacks respect for life—even disdains it—will give aid and comfort not just to racists but to white supremacist terrorists who are in truth more anti-life than pro-white.

OK with Police Brutality

He who tried to revive the death penalty for the wrongly accused “Central Park Five,” who called white nationalists after a murder in Charlottesville, “very fine people,” and who called athletes who respectfully kneel “sons of bitches” but remained silent about a police officer who murdered with his knee, is also the president who will give permission to police brutality as he threatens protestors with “vicious dogs” and “ominous weapons.” This is after he contributed to grievances by allowing disproportionate COVID-19 deaths among minorities, by invoking the Defense Production Act to force minority workers to their deaths, and by allowing big businesses to profiteer off the pandemic while leaving minorities especially defenseless against layoffs and evictions.

These are not coincidences but a deep-seated pattern that is already intensifying in the face of an unrealistic reelection campaign. He has now exercised deployment of the National Guard as well as the iingredients that autocrats often use to steal elections.

Longing for Love
Individuals who lack empathy or conscience often exhibit cruelty or even pleasure at others’ suffering and death, as they are commonly consumed with envy or vindictiveness at a world in which they cannot take part. They are, as psychopathy expert Dr. Elizabeth Powell calls them, “outsiders to love.”

I myself have written that violence is a longing for love gone awry: when one is deprived of love, one does not become neutral to it but develops psychological defenses that make the dearth more endurable. In the process, however, one rejects love, life, and ultimately humanity itself. Substituting respect for love, and fear for respect, if one can have neither respect nor love, the focus turns to subjugation through violence and fear—which caused us to caution against his holding onto war-making powers and access to nuclear weapons.

There is no excuse for the professionals who encounter numerous Donald Trump’s through the course of their careers and yet choose to remain silent, or to cite technicalities to ignore the main tenets of medical ethics and standards of practice, which hold our responsibility to human life and wellbeing as paramount. That the dangers were occurring in the political sphere is not a valid excuse, when the combination of personality and political power produces the toxic mix.

Misguided Psychiatry Association
In this context, I would like to urge the mental health field—especially psychiatry—to meet its societal responsibility. Through my 25-year career, I have greatly valued the mental health knowledge I have been able to impart to my students at Yale Law School learning to represent asylum seekers or prisoners, or to the public health officials of the World Health Organization’s violence prevention division. However, a self-image problem seems to be afflicting psychiatry. Low self-esteem in an individual can lead to a failure to stand up for one’s beliefs, but the same in a field can result in a failure to represent justly its own principles of ethics and practice. It can easily be misguided into corruption, such as it has with the pharmaceutical industry—my reason for resigning from the American Psychiatric Association in 2007—and more recently its misguided attempts to protect an impaired president so as to preserve its federal funding.

Some members of my field may cite principle, emphasizing the need to avoid “ad hominem attacks,” and I would generally agree. But medical identification is not an “attack”, and the issue at hand is protecting public health and safety, not a formula for keeping oneself in the good graces of power. If not psychiatry, who will connect the dots to dangerous psychopathology in the president? If not mental health, who will have the language to address the colossal elephant in the nation’s room? If not the experts, who will break the stigma and misconceptions and bring to bear the practical knowledge of dealing with this natural phenomenon?

In the office of the presidency, this common occurrence has turned into what I have called democide, genocide, bioterrorism, and now a death wish, while meeting all criteria for each. It is an issue we can no longer afford to avoid.

One of the biggest failings of our free press has been and is the way they cover Trump. They have always covered him during the campaign and afterwards not as a candidate or president but as a celebrity. As if different rules apply to him. And right here on this thread is a warning from almost two years ago from one of the best mental health experts in the country saying that the press must stop covering Trump's press conferences unless they also include a verbatim transcript. He pointed out the failing of the press was to take one of these press conferences and pick little bits and pieces of them and make sense them. But if you actually read the verbatim transcripts instead of being distracted by all the stage craft Trump is literally just babbling nonsense. And he went on to explain why that is proof of his mental illness.

I have actually posted some of those transcripts on this thread and defied Trump supporters to make sense of them. And they can't. Because Trump says so many things even contradicting himself within a few sentences so anyone can take any little piece of what he is saying and hear what they want to hear. But in reality Trump is totally detached from reality and is just babbling along like a happy little brook just like my crazy old Aunt Helen used to do.

Chris Hayes Exposes Trump’s Incoherence by Simply Reading His Words Aloud

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes highlighted on his program Friday night what sometimes gets lost now that so many have grown accustomed to President Trump’s ramblings, and that is just how incoherent Trump actually is.

Hayes began, “One thing we’ve learned is that you can never actually get the full flavor of how disjointed, incoherent and incapable of the most basic responses the president is to the most pressing social questions until you actually just read the transcript.”

Hayes then quoted a recent radio interview where President Trump was a phone-in guest on a show hosted by Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade — a place that should be a soft landing spot for Trump.

Hayes explained that Trump was asked a simple, direct question about the treatment of Black people by the police. Hayes then noted that Kilmeade “tried to coach Trump through the question” and read that portion of the interview’s transcript aloud:

Kilmeade: This is the one stat I’m going to bring you to, and I’m going to ask you if could attack this.

According to a Axios-Ipsos poll, 70 percent of white Americans say they trust the local police. Only 36 percent of African Americans do. How do you attack that problem? How do you change things?

Trump: Well I think it’s a very sad problem. As you know, as a Republican I’m doing very well with African Americans and with the vote with the — in polls and everything — especially, I mean, I haven’t seen one very recently because you had the plague come in from China.

So that changed things up, but we had the best economy ever. We had the best numbers for African-American on employment and unemployment in history. Best homeownership — best everything. We had the best numbers in everything — not only African-American, but the African-American numbers were great.

Hayes paused his reading of the transcript to note that Kilmeade recognized that Trump “had lost the plot entirely” and attempted to right the president’s course.

Kilmeade: How do you handle the law enforcement part?

Trump: Well, I think you have to get better.

Kilmeade: How do you handle the law enforcement part of this?

Trump: They have to get better than what they’ve been doing. I mean obviously that was a terrible thing. And I’ve spoken about it numerous times in various speeches. And what’s interesting is I spoke about it when we launched a very successful rocket — a tremendous program that culminated on that day and obviously it goes on from there.

But I then made a speech and it was a speech about the rocket, and I devoted 25 percent of the speech probably to what happened — or more — to what happened with respect to George — George Floyd, and it was — and then you listen to this, he doesn’t talk about George Floyd. The rocket went off, I then I made a speech, and I talked about George Floyd, but they said he didn’t talk about George Floyd.

Hayes’s reading of Trump’s words highlighted something comedian Sarah Cooper has captured with her hilarious viral lip-synch videos of the president. Cooper, who calls herself “The Trump Whisperer,” said the president is fascinating to mimic because he seems to be in ad-lib mode most times.

“It’s just very interesting because you don’t know where his brain is going. I don’t know if he knows where his brain is going,” Cooper told MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell.

Cooper explained what she thinks she has learned about Trump while nailing down her lip-synch.

“I feel like he was able to become the most powerful man in the world on posture alone, just on his ability to speak and speak and speak and speak until you don’t even know what happened,” the comedian said.

She added, “I like the ability to sort of take off the emperor’s clothes, to take away the podium and the people behind him nodding and the suit and the ‘I’m so rich,’ and just have the words there with my facial expressions, so people can actually see how he literally has no clue what he`s talking about.”

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) called for Donald Trump to be removed from office on Friday.

“Is there one brave member of Trump’s cabinet who would move to initiate the 25th Amendment to remove him from office?” Waters asked on the president’s favorite social networking platform.

The 25th Amendment would allow Vice President Mike Pence to ascend to the presidency if a majority of Trump’s cabinet declares “the president is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.”

“Now is the time to save our country before this would-be dictator takes us all down!” Waters warned.

Trump's lack of self-esteem results in 'dangerous' decisions, psychoanalyst says

A prominent psychoanalyst who specializes in understanding narcissistic personalities says that President Trump suffers from a grievous lack of self-esteem, causing him to crave the approval of others to the point that he is willing to take “dangerous” risks in order to look like a “winner.”

Michael Maccoby is the editor of a new book, “Psychoanalytic and Historical Perspectives on the Leadership of Donald Trump,” which includes evaluations of Trump’s leadership style by multiple mental health professionals. He, along with one of the book’s contributors, Dr. Judith Logue, was interviewed this week on the Yahoo News podcast “Skullduggery” about Trump’s personality type and leadership style.

“This is the kind of person whose whole sense of identity depends on whether significant others affirm him as being important,” Maccoby said in the interview. “He sees himself as a commodity. It’s a horrible feeling if he’s not affirmed — if he’s not felt to be a winner — so he’ll do everything possible to create this.”

T rump’s father played an important role in shaping him and used to tell his children that people can be separated into two categories: killers and losers. That early experience helped shape Trump, Maccoby said.

“Self-esteem is not based on any inner qualities,” Maccoby said. “His self-esteem is totally based on what others rank ‘Where is he placed in the market of importance?’ and that makes somebody really desperate in a deep sense to constantly get affirmation. That’s why he demands he has to go out and give a talk to his followers even though it is dangerous right now. He needs that reinforcement.”

Maccoby’s comments and the publication of the book could prove controversial in light of the so-called Goldwater rule, an edict adopted by the American Psychiatric Association barring psychotherapists from diagnosing political figures who they have not personally treated. The rule dates to a notorious incident during the 1964 presidential campaign when Fact magazine published a survey of practicing psychiatrists that showed a large majority of them believed that then-Republican candidate Sen. Barry Goldwater was mentally unfit to be president. (Goldwater later sued and won a defamation suit against the magazine.)

But Maccoby insisted his comments about Trump do not violate the Goldwater rule.

“We’re not diagnosing,” Maccaby said. “What we’re doing is understanding. We’re doing what a historian would do.”

Maccoby’s evaluation of Trump’s leadership style is especially noteworthy since he is one of the only academics whose work has been approvingly cited by Trump himself. In his 2004 book, “Trump: Think Like a Billionaire,” the president wrote that Maccoby’s book “The Productive Narcissist” “makes a convincing argument that narcissism can be a useful quality if you’re trying to start a business. A narcissist does not hear the naysayers.”

Maccoby’s research on narcissism has led him to form opinions on several highly successful corporate titans who he believes are normal type narcissistic personalities. But he said they differ significantly from the president.

“The kind of person who has this very strong need to change things, who has very little conscience, a lot of energy, and some of these people can be productive — they can be Jeff Bezos or they can be Steve Jobs or they can be Elon Musk — the kind of person that Trump compares himself to,” Maccoby said. “But [Trump] is not at all like these people. He is really not essentially a narcissistic personality. He is essentially a marketing personality.”

Worries over the ‘mental acuity’ of the president after ‘complete gibberish’ interview on Fox News

President Donald Trump’s fitness to hold office was called into question after the broadcasting on Thursday evening of a town hall that had been pre-recorded with Fox News personality Sean Hannity.

Trump falsely claimed there would not be any COVID-19 cases were it not for testing to detect the pandemic. Trump also predicted Joe Biden would win the 2020 presidential race and bragged about being “the most perfect person.”

And Trump flopped after being asked his priorities for a second term.
