I've just watched the movie Notting Hill for the umpteenth time and it got me thinking.

Can anyone tell me what it's like to actually be in love? Can you put into words what it feels like?

I've thought that I was in love several times, but wasn't. To say that I haven't found the 'right' one is an understatement - so I think my 'idea' of what love is is slightly askew.

I should point out that I'm a very emotional person - for instance at the end of "Ghost" I cried... I have no problem letting my emotions come out - which is sometimes really detremental to me, obviously at other times it isn't, but that's neither here nor there in as far as this thread goes.

Love is amazing when it works, it feels like theres always someone for you, if you pick up the phone they'll be there no questions asked, it gives you feelings like you understand everything in the world. Its just bliss, you dont care whats going on around you as long as you have that person - you feel invincible.

You can have the worst day in your life, and a few simple words from that special person can make it the best day in your life. Their voice and warmth of them being close to you is better than any drug you could take...

That aside, to ask what it feels like to be in love is like asking what it's like to feel alive. Every person will have a different answer. You could even say that being in love feels exactly opposite of how not being in love feels. So if you're not in love, figure out how you feel and then try and imagine the exact opposite of that.

For myself, feeling in love feels... warm and soft. When you're really tired and all you want to do is sleep and you lay down and bed, curl the covers around you and bury your face in to your pillow and all your muscles start to unknit, the cool sheets on your body and you let out a loooong sigh and, for at least a few minutes, your mind is quiet. It's that but wrapped up in another person.

For me, being in love is like floating on air, you want to scream it from the housetops, you feel invincible, you are on a continual high. You are all lit up when in the presence of the one you are in love with.

Now I can and have loved someone without being in love with them. Being in love is also like a temporary insanity.

In my case I have only been in love 4 times. The last time with a woman on the internet, when I saw her picture after conversations over weeks

. The time before was bittersweet, I was 65 and she was 15, it was truly love at first sight. I felt priveledged to be with her every week for a few years. Our names are linked forever on a song we wrote together. She is 22 now. Born 8-8-85. One of the most beautiful girls I have ever seen with long RED hair.
She never knew of course.

My first time I was 18 and she was almost 15. We are still friends today 54 years later.

My second time I was married and had been I felt deserted by my wife temporarily while she arranged our daughters marriage across the country. That was Susan, and we are still two people who love each other 23 years later. Even though she is married and with two small children now, and a millionaire.

I have loved a number of women but never been ;;IN LOVE except as above.

This is what love is to me. It is a copy of an email i wrote to my girl last year. Its easier to just copy & paste the email that it would be for me to try and describe what love feels like to me. Its not just one feeling. Its many feelings all at once.

You know that feeling you get right after orgasm, when everything's right with the world and your body and mind are exhausted yet completely content? That's how I remember what it felt like to be in love.

 

This is a great description except I would add that floating connected feeling.
