The only statement I take exception to is the statement that for good people to do bad things it takes religion. That's not true. The Stanford County Jail and the Millgrem psychology experiments prove that.

The Church covered it up and moved the priests to new parishes, new towns, new schools, where they could do it again. This goes all the way to the highest levels of the Vatican and goes back who knows how many centuries. They are guilty of enabling and turning a blind eye to one of the most heinous crimes we condemn people far–the sexual abuse of children. But you keep bowing before that alter baller, keep singing those hymns. But ask yourself how much of that tithe money is going to pay off a family of a little boy or girl who was raped by a parish priest in Boston or Minneapolis or Toronto.

In the case of the Catholic Church, I have to confess a certain bewilderment. I know lots of Catholics, and they're all critical of the church for this...but they all, to a person, say it's a matter of "a few bad apples". When reminded that the church heirarchy covered the matter up, protected the priests, claimed that the church was above the law, and then tried to settle all the court cases as quietly as possible with some clandestine payoffs, they either change the subject or say that the greater good brought about by the church outweighs the bad.

But to me, that makes EVERYONE who supports the church complicit in the crime, just as the church leaders' cover-up made THEM complicit. I have no idea what sort of doublethink it requires to allow people to stay in a church (and support it financially) that would do such a thing.

 

Perhaps Baller can explain it. Or TCL. It seemed to vex him rather horribly when I brought it up.

If you've given any money to the Catholic Church in the last several years, chances are some of that money has gone to the costs of the sex abuse scandal. They've run up 2.3 billion dollars worth of bills. Where do you think that money comes from? It comes from you and all the other sheep sitting in those pews and throwing your money in to the collection plate when they pass it around.

The abuse is a fact. The pay-outs are a fact. By you still giving money to this corrupt organization you are helping them do that. They get their money from you and everyone else who attends. Therefore you are just as complacent in it.

Didn't you just go off on a multipage tirade a few days ago for Shake bringing up your name when you weren't posting. It is quite funny that you have such a habbit bringing up mine in the same fashion. It's ok though I don't mind, nothing you have ever said has ever hurt my feelings or ego. The analogy doesn't hold up, Chris. In the case of the sex-abuse scandal, the entire church heirarchy was actively engaged in covering the matter up. In short, they protected the perpetrators, and more importantly, the institution itself...but not the victims. They bear responsibility. And so do people who give them money.

 

In spite of rumours to the contrary, at least I am aware that Roman Catholics do not worship the statues in the Catholic Churches but they may be guilty in some cases of worshipping the BVM. They do pray to the BVM and saints but so do I even tho not a member of the RCC. It cant hurt to pray for or to whoever you like.
